8.5 for Berge? Honestly this man just needs to lace his boots up and people love him.

Gave it away consistently when they had 11 and did absolutely nothing when they had 10, save for a superb dummy for the second goal.

If Norwood turns that performance in, he’s gets absolutely slated.

Agree with your ratings, except for Mcatee, who you have been harsh on!
I'm with him unfortunately.... Loads including him in their performances of the night chatter, I thought he was completely out of the game save for the odd spell, same as Ndiaye.

What a strange take.

My take is a bit more negative.

I thought Sunderland looked dangerous until the sending off and pressed us hard which meant we had to go long. And we generally went long to Baldock, which is a flawed attacking plan, for the reason that George doesn't have much quality in the final 3rd. Mcatee robbing their midfielder and causing the sending off changed the game. Norwood found a bit of space and Sander pushed a bit further forward and we were excellent from then on. In my opinion, we still don't really have a solution for when teams press us, and I didn't see anything in the first 30 minutes, that indicates Sander and Norwood is any better than Norwood and Fleck in that regard. Performances of note

Anel - excellent, other than the silly foul already called out
Sander - a totally different player when we push him 30 yards further up the pitch. I'd like to see Doyle feature as competition for Fleck, with Sander taking one of the front 3 shirts
Khadra - likely to be a fan favourite if he does that every week
Lowe and RND - between them that's the best left sided performance in a long time.
McBurnie - Baby steps and all that but his best 20 minutes for ages. Perhaps the coin has dropped.
Exactly how I saw it.

Players like Norwood will always look great and influential when teams back off and they have time.

Said it for ages, blueprint against us is to press, because we try play through it, norwood drops beside the centre halves and we inevitably give it away time and time again.

I didn't think it was Berge's best night either, he looked slightly sluggish and not a lot came off for him. Still put the hard yards in

Likewise with Ndiaye - really quiet and struggled to have any sort of impact.

First half you're absolutely right about Berge. But he just wasn't in the right position for him. He had shit all space and turned into players consistently.

Second half he dominated them. Found pockets of space and linked up with Anel time and time again. I'd bloody love him to be this player from deep, but for whatever reason he's just not. Most likely the middle of the park is just too congested for him.

Anyway, agree with your report Pomps; aside from McAtee who deserves at least .5 higher.

Cracking write up Pommps, cheers!

For a chunk of the first half, it looked like we were playing with Berge as the deep pivot - with McAtee on his right and Norwood playing the Fleck role.

Seemed to confuse us more than it did them. Bit of wandering about, got Norwood deep - Berge and McAtee floating and switching - looked really dynamic and tasty.

Still not entirely convinced by N'Diaye as a CF but not entirely put off the idea either.

Very pleasantly surprised by McBurnie's contribution. If he strings together 2/3 games like that then he'll get goals in no time!

On to Blackburn 💪🏻⚔️

Berge has so many qualities but he’s so laid back I’d say his downside is that he’s dopey if you look at the great players they are all quick thinkers

Good contributions from just about everybody above, building on Pomps excellent post. Anal is a real find for us though not sure where that leaves Baldock, Khadra is a sparkler who could turn a few games. I felt we gave Sunderland to much room in 2nd half and their goal caused some consternation round me but good result overall. Keep it up lads.

Thanks Pompey. Enjoyable read as ever, and especially more with a win.

Personally I’d mark Wes down maybe 0.5. I don’t think he’s exactly at fault for the goal, but I think he’s come too far. Doesn’t need to be right on the edge for me. Great finish, mind.

Norwood, I’d mark up. His corners were spot on, his crossing was good, heavily involved in both goals. Egan had a good chance from a header, which was also a Norwood cross. He won his tackles, cleared corners, just had a very good game overall. He was massively helped by the red, though, granted. None of our midfield were able to get on the ball much til then.

To be fair to Foderingham, it's a messy situation as he's positioned for us to have possession in that phase, not for us to cough it up cheaply. Sunderland's break was excellent and Stewart's ball was perfect. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the blame for the goal for me is squarely on Egan, not on Foderingham.

I can well imagine the individual and aggregate scores from "Pomp" had Sunderland equalised!!!! (Think he must have gone out on the razz last night after the match before writing that summary)

Great win. Great result. Three points are three points however you get them and we are now back where we need to be, in the scrum. With the extra two from last Saturday, we could have been sat above Blackburn at the top of the table ...

Though we started cautiously and Sunderland were a bit better than we expected. We couldn't settle into a pattern and there were answers to every time we gained possession, and no clear outlets. But they were shithousery throughout and it cost them in the end, luckily for them not with more players. We managed to put them under pressure however and started to expose their frailties whilst not letting them capitalise on ours. The sending off was there to have and the ref had to give it because McAtee would have been in a position to shoot long before their right back would have covered. But like most times when we go up against ten, I was looking round the pitch where their 'hole' actually was. It became apparent late on but there were spells when we allowed that vacant space to close up and we didn't exploit it.

But lets not dwell on the negatives. There were some frankly outstanding performances tonight and further back some vastly improved ones too. We deserved the win and earned it with dogged determinism not to allow Sunderland to press and gain momentum. Good to see we kept our shape well and stayed firm for most of the game. Small worrying period on 80 minutes when Sunderland broke out and went for it and their goal was typical of us faffing about in our own back yard rather than up in their garden.

The first goal was a fucking dream, at last Norwood picks out Anel with a great corner and he is unchallenged but the second was purely lovely football, an A to Z of how to build, feed the pass, score the goal. And we had four players (count 'em) queuing up to smash it in. Can't remember when we scored such a beautiful goal. It was a rare moment when we fed the pass rather than the usual pass it across the box from side to side, afraid to shoot. There was always the threat that we'd lose concentration and concede the equaliser which is an ever present fear for us. But we didn't, and we won.

Foderingham 8/10: There when we needed him, crosses and the like. Bit flat footed for their goal but it's a one-on-one, so much of a lottery for him
Baldock 7/10: Characteristic mettle down the right and forming an alliance with this right sided teammates.
Ahmedovic 10/10: Fucking splendid performance. The bloke was all over the park and a massive threat for the Mackems. Skilful, adept and - dare I say it - 'Better than Basham'. They are some fucking boots to fill, and he did it tonight with a goal and an assist and some brilliant tackling, tracking, heading, runs ... I could go on
Egan 7/10: Thought he held the line better tonight, although he typically cost us the goal with a shitty pass. He's done that before at that end last season when he was pressured and lost the ball.
RND 7/10: A more assured performance from him tonight, but he struggles at times with Lowe on the outside and feels he needs to cover his arse more which can leave gaps
Lowe 7/10: Much better tonight and looking like he is growing into the role at last. Busy all over the park after the sending off and took his goal well
Berge 8.5/10: Great game for Sander if fading in parts near the end. But his qualities are all there to see. He holds onto it, runs with it, creates danger, goes past people and threatens. So unlucky to hit the post in the second half because he deserved a goal
Norwood 7/10: On-off performance, but a lot better than recently. Great corner for the goal (at last) and some decent link work ... and on that basis could be marked higher. But in other areas he is wasteful and risky and still wants to bang it long. When he feeds a pass through, player is on-goal. That's what we want. Superb effort in the second half though. Can we have one of them every week please?
McAtee 6/10: Faltering debut but with promising spells. He'll get used to this system and grow into the Fleck role and be better than him. Horror red card tackle on him.
N'Daiye 6.5/10: Not a lot came right for him tonight and he was muscled out for much of the game
Brewster 6.6/10: Worked his arse off running and pressing but we didn't find him with much. Shame really, because he needs a goal. Our forwards don't score enough for me.

Fleck 5/10: Passable outing if a bit invisible. He didn't fuck anything up, which is a bonus
Khadra 8/10: Great player. Buckets of skill and capability and draws oppositions into gambling yellow cards or being left on their arses. That bring down of that long ball was every bit of class
McBurnie (wait for it ... ) 8/10: Worked his fucking arse off. Proper battling performance, no shithousing (except for his yellow) and dead unlucky to be denied by a great save for a goal. MORE OF THIS PLEASE!

HJ&SMcC: 8/10: A game reasonable well managed to its correct conclusion and some better substitution decisions

Ref: Not bad. Correct with the red card but missed their second one which was horrendous

Shit ! I am struggling to find fault with that report and the marking ! I must be getting old !
One small point: I didn’t think Norwood’s corner was that good. Poor marking and no positivity from the keeper in coming for it left Anel with a clear header.
I still think that the quality of our passing is not great and is often too slow and telegraphed, allowing the opposition to cover or intercept.
Thanks for your time in putting it together each match.

Totally agree re our strikers not scoring. If we can solve thsy problem I think we can finish top 2.

I want to give him more time but I just dont think Brewster is going to do it with us. I'm also not totally sure Ndiaye is an out and out striker, I think hes more of an MGW. Khadra looked good when he came on and McBurnie nearly a bored and made a nuisance of himself.

I honestly dont know what our best front 2 is but what is great is we have a lot of options and strength in depth on the bench.

It's amazing what good corner kicks can do for the fortunes of a football team. I wish Norwood could produce at least one quality corner per game, rather than one good 'un per month.

I was really pleased to see Fleck making way for McAtee and Khadra get some game time. Great result.

Great night out.

Khadra, holy shit, this lad has that "X Factor", that when he gets on the ball and heads towards goal, everyone starts to stand up.

Anel - this is the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket, the one that we don't usually get.

Sander - just class.

Would have liked us to score a few more, but at the end of the day, three points is what we want, and......

Up the Blades!!

Agree, those 3 look like special players, definitely too good for this level.

Then lets not forget we have N'Dieye who is a work in progress with huge talent
and although McAtee didn't do much...the little he did do also showed he has high quality.

Also can't wait for Bogle to return to offer that attacking threat down the right hand side.

Good point.

Berge often puts in polarising performances. He drifts out of matches and makes mistakes

However he's also regularly shows high quality in matches and creates chances by himself.
When he's up for a game and drives at defenders then he's one of the best players in this league.

Sunderland get a goal from those late corners and free kicks and to many, the reaction would have been "what a load of shit we are". Of course the truth lies somewhere in the middle

And we generally went long to Baldock, which is a flawed attacking plan, for the reason that George doesn't have much quality in the final 3rd. Mcatee robbing their midfielder and causing the sending off changed the game.

About ten minutes before the sending off, a long ball to Baldock led to a foul which should have been a red card (which would have changed the game), so I'm not sure that both of your points can be true.

For the first time in a long time, we have a handful of players who scare and worry the opposition. It’s not only good to watch, it takes some pressure off other players in the the squad who are just (quite good enough).
Anel, Berge, Ndaye, Khadra, McAtee and still more players to come, like Doyle, Bogle and even JOC hopefully.
Can any blades fan imagine a team without Basham in it? It’s such a nice change to have players who worry the opposition.

McAtee didn't really replace Fleck.
He replaced Berge as the advanced mf.
Which threw Berge out of his best position.
And so our mf didn't function properly first half.
I wonder if McAtee can play alongside Norwood and let Berge be the advanced mf ?
This…when Fleck came on Berge reverted to his preferred position, and it showed

I came with a thought yesterday (it didn't hurt much) as Norwood seemed to play with couple of pre set functions.
He did nothing wrong and had kinda solid game overal, but I remember seeing him mainly 1) playing long pass to Baldock and/or 2) taking corners/free kicks.
There is players like MGW, Khadra and Ndiaye who seems to have ability to create things out of nothing and Norwood seems to be at his best doing what he is told to do beforehand.

I don't know how correct my thought process is, but this might change the way I watch Norwood's actions in the pitch in the future.

Really pleased at the overall performance and result but for once I can't agree with some of those marks pommps. Up to the deserved sending off (should have been two -O'Nien) we struggled, their midfield press had the predictable consequence on Norwood's performance and our left hand side looked suspect (RND & Lowe combination) and created little. Berge was pretty anonymous and ineffective first half playing deeper. Against 10 men some of those marks make more sense as Norwood had space and Berge was pushed further forward to better effect (wouldn't have given him 8.5 though). But it was 10 men and we struggled at times to exploit the man advantage we held. I had to keep reminding myself they were a man short at times especially after their goal (down to a panicky Egan pass across the back and McAtee not being switched on to the danger). The unnecessary free kick conceded by Anel late on gave them a chance to equalise (the only downside to a great performance). Their keeper played a blinder. Another night we could have had four, or equally have conceded a late equaliser. A good win to have and still a work in progress to my mind though it is concerning that we start a season patching up the left side of defence already and our forwards not striking terror in the opposition as yet. Goals look hard to come by for the forwards.

All I kept thinking last night whilst watching McBurnie was "I hope Pommpey is kind"! And you were! Fair play to McBurnie, I thought he was excellent last night.

No mate. Credit where credit is due. Last night is how he should be playing. He was unlucky not to score

I hope we see more of this McBurnie
