Yep, difficult to disagree with this.
With the caveat that McBurnie being unavailable at the end of last season gifted us, by necessity rather than design, the most threatening forward line we’ve had in years—created, in part, by giving Sander (at last) a run of games higher up the pitch in a strikerless front 3.
If McBurnie had been fit, immediate history suggests Hecky would have continued to pick him. In that scenario we’d never have stumbled on the front 3 of Ndiaye, Berge and MGW, our forward play during those crucial games would have been significantly diminished (it hadn’t been great with McBurnie playing, immediately prior to his injury), and there’s every chance we may not have made the playoffs.
It’s all hypothetical of course. We’ve no way of knowing how the back end of last year might have played out with McBurnie in the side. But, looked at through the prism of last season’s run-in, when McCall claims today that a run of games could sort him out it raises the rather dismal spectre of us weakening the starting XI, now, out of a dogmatic belief that “McBurnie can still work”.
For me, building on the happy accident at the end of last season, there’s at least two options that are worth trying for the next few games, before defaulting to McB. 1) Berge, plus one of the Man City lads or Khadra, alongside or behind Ndiaye. 2) Sticking with what we did v Milwall.
GLTTL, obviously and always. But [adopts Warnock voice], I’m not starting McBurnie anytime soon, me.
