I think OMB has good traits, he's a lot quicker than he gets credit for and he does try (I won't go there and use shift).

But, he never gets in the right position like sharp, can't turn and shoot like brewster, and wouldn't be able to round the keeper and pass it in the net like berge...

Also, Saturday if he'd ran onto that pass where n'dyie scored, he would have ended up on the floor waving his arms looking at the ref, and if by a miracle he wasn't on the floor, he wouldn't have finished the chance.


I say he's had his chance, and should only be on the bench to shore up defence and help close games out by pressing the opposition..

Not a goalscorer... Sorry mate.. And we shouldn't stifle the young lads progress to appease him, loan him out for me if he gets frustrated..

And the shout for a free transfer to rangers, that's a rumour among rangers fans already....

One of his problems is, unlike Billy, his football brain is seconds behind play and hence why he's never in the right position (to anticipate an opportunity).
 
On reflection, Mcburnie has three options that are most likely.

1- he gets fit, goes on a scoring run, we renew his contract on lower wages.

2. He leaves on a free, goes to rangers or Swansea.

3. He becomes the latest footballer to retire early from the game and announce they are going into boxing, Curtis Woodhouse becomes his trainer, he wins the Lonsdale as a lanky middleweight.

Not the worst player by a long way but cost against ability and contribution he's got to be up there with the worst signings ever, if not the worst.

That United paid going rate for someone who'd just bagged >20 in the Championship is hardly McBurnie's fault, neither is the fact he's been continually injured for the best part of the last two years

He doesn't look like he's putting the effort in to keep himself in condition, I've heard it mentioned on here that other players say he's a bad trainer, he's fighting, been caught drink driving and god knows what else between matches, so I would say it is his fault he's not fit

I don't blame him to a certain extent, he's on a massive contract for a club he couldn't care less about, he probably wouldn't have to work another day in his life if he decided to just walk away from the game now

I’ve sat on chairs with higher IQ’s that McBurnie.

The lad can do what he wants for as long as he wants, as far as I am concerned, as long as it isn’t with us. The sooner he clears his locker at Shirecliffe & fucks off the better.

I’ll make two predictions about him: 1.) He’ll be broke within a decade & 2.) He’ll have served prison time within the same period.
 
I despair at some folks blinkered views.
I'm sure most in this thread would want him to miss a chance so they can come on here going "told you so", rather than get behind the player putting on the shirt.

Those slagging him have made their mind up before he even sets foot on the pitch
 

His first season where he was joint 3rd for MOTM performances (voted on here) in the most successful season I have ever seen us have is enough to rule him out of any worst signing list for me. Since then a series of injuries have made it impossible for him to get up and running in a team that severly lacked creativity. I think he had to be fit for the start of this season to stand any chance of clawing it back in a united shirt. Reality is now he probably won't get fit enough or find form quick enough to warrant a new contract. He will sign on a free for Rangers or a championship club and start scoring again.

As a staunch defender of the lad, your conviction is admirable.

There are now 3 full years of evidence out there.

Anyone suggesting that their mind is made up b4 he even steps foot on the pitch is conveniently ignoring the evidence gleaned over this period.

Cos it’s as compelling as it is damning.

The lad just needs to put in some honest graft and cut it back to basics. Make the right runs, try to get in the right positions, put yourself about, shoot on sight. Want to score goals. Everything else: banter, social media presence, fashion is all secondary. That's not a dig, that's not saying don't enjoy life - but for now, he needs to get his career, his fitness and his goalscoring back on track. It's time to have tunnel vision for a bit. He's at risk of being a one season wonder otherwise.

I'm not sure I fully follow your point, so apologies if I chuck any confusion into the mix...

On the one hand, I'm frustrated and don't think he's been good enough.

Then, I tell myself that we've really only ever had one proper season out of the lad, what with injury, illness and COVID.

Then, I tell myself, that he is part of the reason (conduct and conditioning) that we've only had one season out of him. Some of that can't be helped. Some of that isn't good enough.

And I tie myself in knots.

Ultimately, I doubt he'll come good. Time, return from fitness (application? desire?) aren't on his side. I also think he's too lethargic to be my type of footballer, or he'd have to be doing an awful lot right to play in that way, but win me over. I hope he proves me wrong.

For me it's this.

He was fine in that first PL season. He was hungry, we were ruthless. If he rekindles that form, he scores 20 goals in this division.

People keep saying he's got 1 goal in 2 seasons etc. but he's not played regular football.
Last season his stats show 0 goals in 28 games. 28 full games is 2,520 minutes. He actually played 1,013 minutes, equivalent to 11 full games.
He only completed 90 mins 4 times. So 24 of those games were intermittent (either taken off or brought on).

Others referenced Berge and Brewster and how they improved when they managed to get a run of games. It's the same for McBurnie, but none of the fans seem to want to give him the chance to do it.

If Wolves wanted to buy him he'd be at Wolves.
He wasn't good for us in the PL. He had a few good games, at most. Half a dozen goals isn't a good return.
 
He kept Ndiaye out last season because we kept playing McPub!! His injury was some form of blessing.. i can't help but think if Ndiaye played as opposed to McPub we could have pushed for 2nd position last season. He's costing us lots :(

Good counter argument, backed up with the stats that show how stop-start and bit-part it's felt in that time.
 
Disagree he's the worst pound for pound signing we've ever made and it's something also levelled at Mousset.

They have both been disappointing over a longer period of time for different reasons and the decision to release Mousset was correct, with OmB probably needing a strong six months now to avoid the same.

Between them they scored just under a third of our goals in 2019/20 (12 of 39) which led to the prize money for a top half finish plus another year's TV money before we did come down. An outlay of £28m between them for a gain of £140m (I'm not saying we'd have definitely gone down but 12 goals for a newly promoted side is hard to find) is not in bad pound for pound territory.

There is a case for Brewster at the moment as he cost upwards of £20m for no PL goals and a relegation, however I'm a big fan of him and hope this season is the start of better things for him both in his career and an SUFC shirt.

Comparing either Brewster and/or Berge with McBurnie is literally comparing apples with cement!

This is untrue, when not injured he is one of the hardest trainers in the squad. Moose couldn’t be arsed Burke was shocking!
