Now underway with a 0-1 in the Huddersfield vs Burnley game.

Apparently according to the Beeb Burnley we’re the dominant team and Huddersfield failed to register a shot on target.

I’m not overly shaken by the capability of either line up of this is an indication of how they see their XI for the season.

Huddersfield lined up as follows:

Nichols
Turton Edmonds-Green Lees Ruffels
Hogg
Thomas Russell Holmes Koroma
Ward

Subs: 8Anjorin, 9Rhodes,13Chapman, 18Kasumu, 22Rudoni, 30Jackson, 33Nakayama

I’m surprised Anjorin didn’t start. As a PL loanee I thought that they would have him straight in there. To me their team looks a bit stale. Lost a right back to Olympiakos, lost their left back and also there main engine in the midfield to Forest. Ward is a grafter but not a huge scorer. The defence overall looks unimpressive and I thought the midfield might have done better than yesterday.

Despite the positive result you do realise that Burnley have lost a fair bit of quality. They lined up as follows:

Muric
Roberts Harewood-Belis Taylor Maatson
Cullen Cork Bastien
Costelloe Barnes Brownhill

Subs: 6Egan-Riley, 11Twine, 15Peacock-Farrell, 21McNally, 22da Silva, 32Phillips, 39Dodgson

This looks quite a makeshift line up for the first game. They have the keeper from City who was effectively 4th choice there. Conor Roberts should be a decent performer at right back though is Lowton injured? He was not in the squad. Their defence is the 20 year old from City who was on loan at Stoke somewhat bizarrely paired with Taylor who is a 5’9” left back. That’s an obvious weakness right there. Maatson who was decent at Coventry is another PL loan, this time from Chelsea though at 5’6” he’s another that adds to the aerial weakness on the left.

The midfield looks robust but uncreative and lacks goals. Cullen got 1 in 67 at Anderlecht. Bastien got 11 in 106 at Standard Liege. Cork has 14 goals in 494 league games. Brownhill has 25 goals across 290 league games.

The lad on the right of three is a youngster and Barnes has something like a 1 in 5 strike rate.

Cornet and McNeil would seem a big loss in terms of creativity for them. It seems they will have a big reliance on Twine to replicate his form of last year to keep them in the hunt. Vitinho is the new Brazilian signing though I find this bizarre given right back is the one area they seem well covered. Bit like getting someone you fancy rather than someone you need.

At this point I’d say both need to be active in the market and we are a lot further forward with their squad building.

Watford seems a hard one first up with players you’d expect to leave still there, though 23 points was hardly sensational last season so let’s not be fearful in any way. Norwich we’ll see. Again 22 points was pretty rank, falling below our poor season twice by them.

Onwards to the next games. But nothing to fear on those line ups.

Burnley were excellent. Fast, attacking football, accurate passing, energetic. They were unlucky not to be three or four up after the first half. They were running rings round Hudders, who couldn't keep the ball.

Some Huddersfield fans seem to think it was more down to them being crap and Burnley weren't actually that good. They are also baffled why their manager started with all their new players on the bench. Could just be sour grapes from the Huddersfield fans.

To be fair that was also my assessment.
Yes Burnley were fast and attack minded, but Huddersfield also made them look good!

I’d also agree, but I still saw enough to think that they will be a force this season. Their new players all looked very good and they are still looking to add more, with the commentators suggesting that Callum O’hare could be next to join.

Their keeper looked less than convincing to me, even though he didn’t have much to do and the defence wasn’t really tested. The midfield looked exceptionally good. This may have been accentuated given the lack of mobility in that position that I have seen from the blades over the last 12 months.

I was impressed by Burnley. Completely different to Dyche's sides. Played with great intensity and movement.

Considering they'd lost their long-standing manager, changed their style of play, lost most of their core experienced players and brought a load of new signings in, they were excellent.

If Kompany has managed to do that by day 1 of the season, they're going to be up there come the end.

If Costelloe kept his cool, they'd have been out of sight. Brownhill will be a big player this season.

Burnley did look very good ( like a Poundland Man City) albeit against a shite Huddersfield team. UTB

Burnley looked v good to me. Fast and fluid movement of the ball when they had it and won possession back quickly and easily. Brownhill their stand out player for me.
Only one game tho... will be interesting to see if Huddersfield struggle...

Early days. I remember Sky creaming themselves over WBA for a good chunk of the early part of last season, before they realised Albion weren't as good as they wanted them to be. As far as Burnley last night, I think it was a mix of 1) new Burnley players wanting to make a statement for their boss on opening day, lots of energy exuded, and a couple of decent players chucked in (Cullen looks a very tidy player), and 2) Huddersfield being really crap. I mean come on. First game of the season and they looked flat energy wise, with much leadership and it was clear that they were nowhere near the same side as last season. Way too early to know how things will pan out this season but on that performance they will surely struggle this season. Not to have a shot on target in 95 mins is poor for any league game and it wasn't because Burnley were so good. They weren't. It was because Huddersfield couldn't string a pass together for 80 mins and were all over the shop. Easy night for Burnley really and they will have far far tougher tests as the season goes on. Fair play to their players after the match who where interviewed though as they alluded to that point.

My conclusion from last night was that Burnley will threaten at the top but not be anything better than the top teams in there, and Huddersfield will have to strengthen or they will have a season of struggle. OBrien and Toffolo were their best players and it showed last night. Losing their manager may also have derailed them too. Nothing to fear from those two even if sky will have you thinking that Vincent Kompanys Burnley are the big hitters in the Championship. They're not.

Opening day line ups are rarely a reliable indicator

Will be interesting to see how Kompany fares

Was very impressed with Burnley, they dominated the match so much, they made it kind of boring and predictable, "a non contest".
At full time I was thinking......that's the winners of the league right there.

Whilst interviewing Kompany post match I thought back to David Weir's first match for us at home to Notts County.
He changed our style into a keep possession side and we looked so impressive beating County 2-1.
Our tactics were designed around Kevin McDonald and we looked totally dominant.....McDonald was sold to Wolves days later.

Then under Weir after a great debut win we quickly went down hill.....still played some really good passing (keep possession) footbal but kept losing.

As you say the 1st match is rarely an indicator of what's to come.

I predicted Huddersfield for relegation last season. They were shockingly bad when they beat us with a breakaway last minute goal, at the Lane last season.
They put almost the whole team in defence and rarely came out of the own half, it was only the last 10 minutes that they showed some ambition.
Just shows what I know, It seems impossible that a team looking so poor could have finished in the play-offs last season.
Wouldn't surprise me...if they do a Barnsley.....in the play-offs last season.....followed by relegation this season.

I though Hudds turned it round second half but a lot of attacking with little actual threat on goal. Pretty drab first 15 but a good game overall I thought

Burnley were untouchable in the first half, sharp crisp passing but most noticeable was their work rate and high press at the top of the pitch. When they tired Huddersfield came into the game.
At the end of the first half the gap was so wide I was thinking of a double of Burnley going up and Huddersfield being relegated.

Before we concede the League to Burnley already please bear in mind Huddersfield were absolutely tragic, they look bottom six material to me this season, and Burnley only put one goal past them.

I think it was McAnuff who said they looked very much like Barnsley last season; lost an influential manager and key players. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re in a relegation battle. Difficult to tell after one game though but in the first half they looked clueless.
Looking at Burnley’s recruitment, he seems to have done a good job. With the money they’ve brought in from sales, they’ve been able to cover their debt. By losing a lot of the senior players on frees, they’ve also cut the wage bill significantly so Kompany has had a little room to rebuild. He’s gone quite Wilder like, bringing in Cullen and Bastien from Belgium, two players in their mid twenties, approaching their best years and with plenty of experience, still with something to prove. Maatsen looks a good loan and we know about Twine’s potential. He’s also been able to add a couple of decent proven championship players like Roberts from Swansea. I’d say it was solid rather than spectacular but it should give them a level of consistency, which is important. Need to see them tested by a better team though. Judging on one game, they look like a good championship side but may find it difficult if they get promoted, without a lot more spending.

Watching Caduff and yoyo Norwich, how old is Pukki? It seems he's been playing for about 20 years.

Norwich look crap. I thought cantwell could be a good poach but I take it all back, he's shit based on this performance.
