Stephen Quinn is currently perched on top of the League 1 assists charts, and perhaps unfairly, Kevin MacDonald is not in the list.

Now as some have rightly pointed out, asissts can be a bit meaningless, given that you can get an assist for the ball bouncing off your arse, whilst the 50 yard pass that led to the goal gets nothing.

In an attempt to redress the balance i'm going to go through all the video highlights of our games, and assign a point for every key pass that led to a goal.

By key pass i mean every pass that was part of the phase of the attacking play where the play moved on from looking for an opening, into actively exploiting the opening. This could lead to some interesting debate and i'll be happy to modify my findings based on feedback.

I'll try and do one or two a day but University work has to take precedent.

Sheff Utd V Oldham

1-0 Corner from Quinn, directly onto Maguire's head

2-0 ball down the line from MacDonald to Quinn, Quinn crosses it in where it gets turned in by Cresswell

Hartlepool V Sheffield Utd (Carling Cup)

Bladesplayer video is poor quality on this one so not sure who provides the final ball

1-0 Doyle lays it off to quinn, who prods it out wide to Mendez-laing(?). They supply the cross that Quinn heads home

1-2 Macdonalds chip into the box is headed down to Quinn from williamson. Quinn takes a few touches to try and find the opening and then lays it off to Williamson who's mishit shot is turned in by Lowton.

In circumstances where a player makes two passes in the play , i will count them as two key passes, therefore Quinn and williamson get two a piece

2-2 Collins(?)drives the ball forward and passes to williamson who shoots home

3-2 Penalty from Williamson

1-0 Mendez-laing and quinn both get shots blocked before Porter unleashes the fury from 3 inches. Don't know who supplied the pass to ML. If i did know i would include it as a key pass.
2-0 Macdonald feeds it wide for Mendez-Laing who's cross-shot goes in at the near post.
3-0 Doyle feeds porter who's blocked shot is turned in by lowton.

This seems a bit of an odd (presumably tongue in cheek) thread designed to make the stats fit an argument... Apologies if its serious, but i'm unsure how to judge this one.

I'm not really sure what the intended aim of this is. Is it like the Britton thread that try to prove he is as good as Xavi?

For me an assist can be worth more than the 50 yd ball as without it, the goal scorer wouldn't have received the ball to bag the goal.

What next? Pass completion ratio?

Passes in the final 3rd?

Perhaps the next thing could be to look at Key Passes that didn't result in a goal, but were amazing passes. I remember Cotteril was good at this. If only the strikers were sitting up on Row BB of the Kop, we'd have had a hatful of goals....

Not meant tongue in cheek at all, and if you've got any contributions to the methodology i'd be happy to hear them. I'm weighting equally all the touches before a goal from the point at which i feel that the play has become dangerous.

I just want to know who's made contributions to all the goals that we've scored this season.

1-0 Ball played forward to Quinn who spreads it out wide to lowton. His cross his met by Creswell who doesn't get much on it, but the ball falls to ched who finshes it with aplomb.

For me the play doesn't start getting dangerous until Lowton receives it so i'll start the counter from the lowton cross.

Assists is not a fantastic stat, but it shows the last contributor to a goal before it reaches the scorer.

Like i said, i'll take it back to when i feel the passage of play has started to become dangerous.

Take the game against scunthorpe where we drew 1-1. Doyle and Quinn both make passes before the ball is fed to Lowton, but i didn't feel them dangerous passes. Some people might say that quinns pass to Lowton was the start of the dangerous passage of play.

My main reason for doing it is so i can have some data to argue against some assumptions that i (and other people) have

Surely the point is thou,SB,is that someone over a season playing in a midfield or attacking role,who contributes significantly to the goalscoring assists of the team,adds more value than someone in a simlar role who barely contributes. e.g. Christiano Ronaldo creates and scores...which is why he is valued more than Ruud Van Nistelroy who just scored in the main(alot of goals,thou )

A certain player in our teamseems to be a scapegoat for a lot on here and DB even gave him a '3' for Saturday when I thought he was the only player from our midfield who looked like creating anything....the same again for the first 60 minutes at Colchester. Hoskins on the other hand,although out of position admittedly,hasn't contributed as much creatively.

Ched's first touch is probably the worst in the team and it cost him at least 3 attempts on goal on Saturday and at least a couple at Colchester....but he appears to escape critisism

1-0 Quinns play a long ball to evans who picks it up with his back to goal 35 yards from goal, skins a couple of cheezie players and buries it into the far corner.

Sheffield Utd v Rochdale

1-0 Jean-Francois channels the spirit of Frank de Boer in USA 94 and plays a long ball from right back up to the forwards line. the defender get a head on it, but only to put the ball into the path of evans who fires into the top corner.
2-0 Quinn holds a couple of midfielders off, and plays the ball out to JF on the left. His cross is met by cresswell at the near post.
3-0 Evans free kick from 30 yards

Bournemouth V Sheffield Utd

1 - 0 A lee williamson short pass to mcDonald, and macca finds doyle who has the freedom of Dean court on the right. Cross turned in by a bournemouth defender.
2 -0 a doyle ball to ched on the right wing. Ched crosses in for another own goal

Sheffield Utd v Notts county

1- 0 Some good work from JF in the middle, and he find maguire. Maguire relases lowton down the right and he crosses for Flynn to slot away.
2- 0 A quick throw from Evans to quinn, who lobs the ball into the 6 yard box, for cresswell to knock in.

1-0 Maguire Long ball finds Porter. Porter with a small touch to Doyle who's throw ball finds Ched on the edge of the area. Evans is tackled but the ball falls to flynn who fires home from 20 yards
2-0 Doyle makes and intercepting header which finds ched. Ched backheels to flynn who's cross is turned in by porter.
3- 0 Evans plays the ball out wide to williamson, he lays it off for Lowton who crosses for a ched goal.

Carlisle v Sheffield Utd

1-1 Quinn free kick to the far post, Maguire heads it back in and Ched bundles over the line
2-2 From a blocked evans free kick, mcdonald has a shot blocked before Evans gets the goal at the second attempt

Sheffield Utd v Wycombe

1-0 A hopeful ball from Doyle bobbles its way through to hoskins who scores with his first touch.
2-0 Collins spreads it wide to lowton who finds Flynn. Lowton picks it up a second time and crosses it to the far post for williamson. He knocks the ball into the six yard box for ched to turn and score.
3- Quinn -> hoskins -> flynn -> Macca - Hoskins - > Macca goal

1-0 Not sure who takes the corner, but the ball is headed back in by Lowton for collins to get the header

Really just doing it to a) satisfy my own idle curiosity b) to watch all of our goals again, and c) to see if Quinn is really as useless as the weekly match reports make out. d0 If Macca is as crucial to our game plan as common knowledge would have it.
