But in the previous 18 months before MGW we created nothing up front which led to our relegation. I've just got that feeling that we won't have the speed, trickery or guile to do owt this season. Fleck hasn't been good enough for over 2 years, Norwood has no pace or trickery. Ndiaye won't be able to do it all by himself and nobody else has any pace up front apart from Brewster who seems reluctant to run with the ball at his feet. Hope I'm wrong and we can get the right player in otherwise it could be a long season.

Sharp & McBurnie to return, Jebbo gaining more confidence, Khadara coming in & possibly one more. Doyle added to the midfield. Norwood is one of best & most influential players (look at our results with & without him last season). I get the Fleck issue. Decent strength in depth all over.

It’s been a shite pre season for results but let’s not jump to conclusions.

I agree. The midfield needed major surgery, for me it has just had minor keyhole.
I still think you’ll see another come in, but we’ve got:

Doyle
Arblaster
Fleck
Osborn
Norwood
Berge
Khadra (very likely)
Coulibaly

Plus one more. That’s not a bad selection for this level

Mate, we've been without real creativity (not counting MGW) since coming back from lockdown. Hence our stop-start approach. You're right, Fleck is now a burned out player and nowhere near what he was, Norwood is only a hero to those who ejaculate every time he whumps it over to a closed down wingback and Berge is very much not the style guru we thought he was. The midfield is the beating heart of any team and the catalyst of chances and goals. Until we cure ourselves or WILDER-19, we'll still look one dimensional, predictable and flaccid.

For Berge is the main player we must keep him. he was brilliant for us in the last few games and playoffs.
once he gets into his stride it is very hard for opposing players to stop him. his passing is very good.
I think Brewster will be good for us in the upcoming season. the only worry is the attacking fullbacks.
good going forward but getting caught out on counterattacks. pulling the centreback out of position.
Having said all that we will be challenging up top again. however, it is vital we have a good start to the season.
Let's make Bramall Lane a fortress again. and daunting for the opposition and fans.
UP THE RED AND WHITE WIZARDS.

Sell Berge for something near £20m and we should be thankful. Sign 3 or 4 quality players with that money and we're laughing
Controversial opinion but I agree I’d cash in on him now. Providing we can do what you said & buy 1-3 top end championship players

If we do anything other than invest the money back into the squad then don't sell. If we re-invest it then absolutely. We don't play to his strengths and £20m for a championship player would be near unheard of

Serious question. Do you really believe any money from the sale of Berge would be made available for re investment? I have my doubts. Maybe a portion of it but certainly not the full amount. Personally I'd like him to stay another season playing in that advanced role.

I beg your pardon

Fleck and Norwood have no authority in the midfield at this level anymore 😕. I thank them for some great times Fleck at Swillsbourgh Norwood at ok I'm still thinking 🤔 only reason I see them being near the 1st squad is to cut the oranges and pick up the balls harsh I know but no sentimentality in football now.

I’d say possibly £5m-£7.5m of that gets reinvested in the playing squad. They cash in £13m (probably still owe a large proportion of the fee to Swansea for McBurnie etc)

Villa at home. What a performance by Norwood

Would be suicide if we don't re-invest

If, god forbid, McBurnie does 'return' he will make absolutely zero difference to this team.
In fact I'd go as far to say he'll be detrimental to the team!

Afraid I've jumped, m'i problem is I can't find a ripcord.

Just about every member on here has remarked about our midfield and how 1 dimensional it is but we forget and then we believe there’s salvation in a loan player or 2 and may be a small miracle but we’re so lacking in the midfield department and have been for best part of 3 seasons and nothing is done about it.

My concern is if we can score enough goals.take Billy out of the equation and we are left with Brewster who I hope can step up to the plate, mcburnie who imho is right up there with some of the worst strikers I've seen in 45 years of watching utd. That leaves us with two young uns who I hope will have good careers with us but at the moment aren't good enough enough.

Not saying your wrong with the theory, but reckon the practicality isn’t possible

For example, would you rather have Cantwell or Berge?

I’d go Berge every time, yet I reckon you’d not get much change from the £20m
Down grade imo.

If you go 3 for the price your looking at sub £7m each - which isn’t going to get you anything great
Plus each one of those £7m lads are going to want £30k per week each, so we’ve double that element of the wage bill

I’d keep him, tell him we’ll review in JTW.
Bearing in mind he’ll be putting in some World Cup selection performances

I think he will shine with better players around him who can see the game like he does. Get Doyle fit, Khadra in & a fit Sharp - I’d take that.

We are heavily reliant on Berge and Ndiaye and possibly Brewster. The latter two are still young kids so it's hard to put too much pressure on them to consistently deliver. The former might not be here; if he is we have to hope his hammy doesn't go pop. It's hard to expect too much from Bill due to age and his recent injury record although he always proves this logic wrong . The rest of the forwards are even younger and more inexperienced than Ndiaye. We can't bank on them. Hopefully Brewster can come good.
From what I can see we are going to really miss Bogle at RWB; none of the LWB look very imposing from an attacking point of view.

The interesting one for me is Coulibaly: he seems to have a trick and the ability to transition with the ball at pace (something we are desperately lacking). He's a wild card that will hopefully come good.
As for the manager: I won't look too deeply into pre season, but the games have been very safe. The word insipid springs to mind. The pressure was largely off last season so he could have a free go at it. I hope he's not a Blackwell 2.0 now the pressure is on (i.e. ultra safe). Well soon know!

And the silly bastard let McGoldrick go !

Agreed

Reminds me of the Solskjaer situation a bit

Manager lost dressing room (Slav never had ours!)

Comes in, face they know, puts a smile back on their faces and the feel good factor improves results

Full season expectations rise, nice bloke but ultimately just a little short as lacks the cutting edge and nous

Hope I’m wrong, but you look at the best managers and they have an edge

Pep moves out Sterling
Klopp - Mane
Fergie - beckham, hughes etc

Even our managers who have had success had a bit of a bastard in them - Bassett, warnock, wilder

Is PH just a nice bloke who should be a coach (knill) or does he have it in him?

Reconvene in January…..
