Improvements needed in match day atmosphere?

Home games have become flat I agree, but I think it's a generation thing back in the mid 80s and upto say 2006 our fan's were great home and away, even when we had 8000 9000 thousand at the lane we still sang. Maybe I am wrong but it's just my opinion. My week was work work work until Friday in the George at woodhouse talk about the game night before and then Saturday back on the Beer. Just have a good time

I have actually,I've been to Barcelona vs Getafe and not necessarily overseas but celtic vs Aberdeen and your point is?

Mostly empty Camp Nou maybe not the best example, the point is that you say "don't want to go down that route" without having actually experiencing said route and then realising that in comparison English support is fucking shit. I doubt things will ever change though, in a similar vein there's bound to be plenty that looked at our recent attempts to pay market value for players and say "no, this isn't what United do, we should stick to free transfers, loans and, if we do ever spend money, hoping that we can somehow strike gold by thinking that the fee which would have bought the player we needed fifteen years ago will still work today"

Who the f**** wants that ?

Been to a few Bundesliga matches, the atmosphere is a different level.

We’re currently singing along to Status Quo on PA and sitting grumbling largely in silence for 90 minutes. If we’re calling out other countries support for being cheesy, we haven’t got a leg to stand on.

It was quite full,my point is I'd rather united fans be united fans and don't try to emulate foreign teams fans, when we are on the ball united fans are amongst the best just plain and simply being us,I wouldn't want to change it for the world I'm from the era of G and H block being intimidating and ferocious.

I’m moving my seat for next season. I’m surrounded by a right set of boring people. Can anyone tell me the best row / set of seats on the Kop where rufty tufty real men hang around? I wanna sing. I wanna shout. I wanna let it all out.

And when we're not we do fuck all. Unless McBurnie or the scapegoat of the month is playing to berate. It pisses me off that we do not have a section of Bramall Lane where there are enough people that want to generate some atmosphere without the team giving them permission first

We didn't need the team to give us permission in 90s and 00s

Waving red and white umbrellas about etc. Each country has its own football fan culture, hopefully ours doesn’t include rattles and jumping about in guttural voices. I think the atmosphere at the back of the Kop is just fine.Perhaps the new American owner can get some Rah Rah back into it. I once went to a basketball match in Orlando, Christ it was pathetic,

Always gonna have a hangover after last few seasons and it feel a bit flat. Most home games the atmosphere is pretty poor even for big games.

I’m not sure you’d be obliged to bring an umbrella every week. But if umbrellas were the order of the day, surely you’d just sit in the remainder of the ground rather than the safe standing section sans umbrellas?

My experience of the German fan culture is that it’s basically the same as ours, but it’s far noisier, far more fun and far, far more accessible for youngsters and people who want to sing. This is why there’s 1000s of British fans flying over every week to experience it. Re: Safe standing I don’t know why anyone would begrudge that coming into our game and giving choice to those that want it.

Fully agree about safe standing. Wonder how many foreigners fly into England for the « footy » experience ?

Just giving a personal opinion. I’m not calling anyone out. I just think it looks naff ( alternative word). Next you’ll be wanting some attention seeking ego maniac orchestrating the crowd with a megaphone ? Obviously I like fans being loud and proud as I’m sure the players do but it shouldn’t be artificially constructed but develops organically. I enjoy listening to the Palace « ultras » but it does seem a bit « cheesy ». » Altogether now hands above your head half of you swing to the left half to the right, to create a wave effect »

Thing is about German fan culture is that people are involved producing tifo and organising during the week. Not just turning up to a match and having 10 pints. During the match the capos with the megaphones orchestrate things - I’ve been shouted at before for getting my phone out 😂

The culture has been going for years, fair play to palace and Ipswich for getting things going.

We got John Denver at the beginning of each half. What more do you want!?😌

When I was on the yellow wall, it was outstanding. Best atmosphere ever at a football ground and pales anything I’ve ever experienced at United into insignificance. It wasn’t even a big game for them either, they were playing the then newly promoted Union Berlin.

Flags are wonderful, unless you are behind them, but it’s ok never be allowed into SUFC due to fire certificate

I think many forget how good the atmosphere at the Lane used to be. As someone who can't get to games that often, when I do get the chance I'm shocked at how poor it has become.

I started going in 1982 and had a season ticket for thirty years. I can recall great atmospheres throughout the eighties and nineties. In the early 2000s the atmosphere was superb and this got us quite a reputation with media and opposition fans alike. This is when G&H blocks on the South Stand even used to sing. The noise was something else at times.

I don't look back with rose tinted glasses either. I can vividly remember the feeling the atmosphere at these matches gave me.

Bramall Lane used to rock and it can again if people make the effort. I think there needs to be more will and organisation between the club and fans for things to change. At least this has now become a talking point among supporters.

Can’t knock it can you? :)

I know some have taken the piss out of the umbrellas, but if the Stuttgart fans were like that in our away end then that would comfortably be the best / noisiest away support at the Lane for 10 years, probably longer.

Well last year I moved to rome and have become very invested (probably too invested already!) as an AS Roma fan. The whole match day experience here is different (at all Italian domestic games) and it comes down to a combination of many reasons, here are a few differences I noticed:

1) Beer in the stands. Not only because it hugely reduces all queues, but it encourages people to take their seats early. The ground is virtually full 30 minutes before kick off which allows the atmosphere to start building and songs to be sung.

2) leading me to the second point of no pre match music from the 90s but just 3 different club songs in the lead up to kick off to generate an atmosphere

3) flags. God they look good I think.l and they are everywhere. Maybe it’s not to everyone’s taste, and I do understand someone’s earlier point about being sat behind them, but actually it’s not as restrictive as you might think

4) designated sections for different types of fans. The curva sud is famous for the roma ‘boys’ as they are called (they refute ultras in the basis that Lazio call themselves that) and if you want the best atmosphere you can go there. Families in the sides and tourists in the curva Nord. Done.

5) family friendly songs, Al positive about their club. This might sound a strange thing to say but they are songs that EVERYONE can join in on. Just songs about how they love their club and they will support them forever etc etc etc

Compare that to ‘shag your women and drink your beer’ etc. who the fuck sings that now? It’s not inclusive and not pleasant. Do better England.

There are simple tweaks to be made but just saying ‘the game is different now’ does not excuse the poor atmosphere at BL, because there are many things to do which can improve it

It's not going back to the way it was in the 70s/80s/90s anytime soon. The current generation of football fans grew up watching the majority of their football on the TV, mostly teams they don't even support. That's why match day noise is largely driven by what is happening on the pitch, rather than being something people do naturally just by being at a football game.

Was previously against the continental style ultras section, but my views on this has changed in recent years as grounds and BL in particular have become more sedate.

I think it’ll take organisation and a defined area for it to properly improve. It’s happened at many other clubs, so why not here?

Unfashionable Oldham have done it fairly recently and it seems to have taken off a lot this season for them.
Yea they got relegated

Yea they got relegated
And?

Their problems are well documented and totally out of the fans’ control.

But, they create a good atmosphere and have been able to unite themselves, as a group of fans, in difficult times. I’m sure the Oldham fans have preferred this path to just sitting there in silence and taking it all on the chin.
