Was this the most crazy game ever at the lane?

For the right reasons, it's the craziest game i've seen. For the wrong reason, i raise you "The Battle of Bramall Lane" .......
 
Battle of Bramall Lane followed by the Brighton 5-4

mind you there have been a few.
 
One of the greatest games of football ever. I always rank it in my top three United matches. I still chuckle to misen now when I remember having a fag at half time and saying 'it's got nowt nowt written all over it.' I've looked everywhere for the goals on the web.
 
Was a great second half! If my memory serves me correctly - We fell behind, equalised through a belter from Tonge (20+ yard freekick), I think we took the lead through nuddy, cardiff leveled, i think we retook the lead, cardiff leveled, then jack lester scored a "gazza" esq goal and finally nuddy finished off with the hat-trick.
 
remember this one well,arriving at the ground straight from getting off a plane from crete and nearly falling asleep in the first half!
 
Four days earlier we had pasted Rotherham 5-0 on the Tuesday night.

Peschisolido and Ndlovu got two each and Tonge scored the other.
 
the best time ever was the run that saw us go from bottom of the top division at xmas to staying up with games to go , crowned by a fantastic 2-1 win at QPR with Bob Booker scoring the goal a header that ensured survival, had a run of great home results scoring freely and generally good watching, starting with a 3-2 win over forest

Funny you should mention it, but thought exactly the same thing. The first half was absolute shite. Mind you we was in a bit of form as we had put 5 past Rotherham midweek.

On a different point, the Howard opposite the station was locked out mainly because of the Cardiff fans in town, but there was a work's do taking place in there so i had to ring up to get in, and i watched through the curtains the Soul Crew, mob-handed going toe to toe with South Yorkshire's finest. That day i still think that is the tidiest firm to visit the Lane i've seen. Absolute nutcases.
 



Two games from my youth:

New Years' Day 1955. Blades 6, Newcastle United 2. A crowd of over 32,000 saw the Blades go four goals up in the first 8 minutes. Those arriving a few minutes late - from the pub perhaps - couldn't believe the score. I think Newcastle's keeper was an international, though I can't recall his name. The score suggests that the Geordies were a bit hung-over from a New Year's Eve celebration. For the record, the scorers were: Ringstead, Hagan 2, Hawksworth, Spencer 2.

The other match was, of course, Blades 7, Owls 3. 8 September 1951. Wednesday scored first but the Blades pulled it back to 2-1 by half time before going berserk in the second half. Scorers: Hawksworth 2, Brook 2, Ringstead 2, F.A.Smith. Hagan didn't get among the goals but I'm sure he must have had a few 'assists'. The crowd was 51,075.

I remember walking down Bramall Lane afterwards, turning down denby street, and as I did, the St Mary's roundabout was a sea of violence. All you could see was burberry, fists flailing and the occasional flash of a flourescent SYP uniform as they attempted to restore order.

Just after the 5th goal went in, sealing our victory, three sides of Bramall Lane rose as one and started chanting "En-gerland, En-Gerland, En-Gerland." The Cardiff fans went mental.

Now then broomhill, I'm delighted you mentioned that Newcastle game. My grandad, now sadly deceased, is the John Spencer who scored the 2 goals v Newcastle. It was a game he always remembered, even in his latter years when he suffered with dementia. He said he always remembered that you could smell the ale on the Newcastle players. I think I remember him saying it was 5-2 at half time and he scored the only goal of the second half in front of the Kop. Newcastle won the cup that year.

I remember Lester scoring an almost Gazza-V-Scotland (Euro 96') goal, in the 5-3 win over Cardiff.

My Dad and Grandad were running late for this game (not because they were in the pub!) and were walking up Shoreham Street at kick off. Hearing the cheering, my Father ran on ahead and only missed the first goal. United were 3-0 up when my Grandad arrived on the kop only 5 minutes late!
 
Thoroughly enjoyed that game, great entertainmen, but when we got back to the car, my dad had had his window smashed in with a brick. Nowt taken, just smashed the window. Mindless shits.

I remember John Spencer well. He started as an amateur with the club, then signed as a part-time pro (not unusual in those days) since he was training as an accountant. Good ball control but struck me as quite skinny and looked as though he would easily be knocked off the ball - however, that was probably an illusion since he scored 12 goals in 30 appearances for the Blades.

A bit similar was that game in the 4th Division at Colchester when Keith Waugh decided to have a mare and we were 3-0 down in about 10 mins.

It ended 5-2 to Colchester and was the only time that season we were on MOTD.
 
It was a brilliant game with some cracking goals. If I remember rightly Ndlovu caught their keeper out with a 35 yard shot from out wide, and Richard Langley scored a belter of a free kick into the top corner for them.

Yeah, he was always skinny broomhill! He did qualify as an accountant and back in the days of the maximum wage I bet he made more money from that that he would have done as a pro back in '54-'57! It's lovely to know that you can remember him playing though, cheers mate.

Yeah remember that goal well and it was even better watching it back later on TV.

Can't find a video of that.
 
the game at brighton's god awful ground with the running track around it when asaba got a hat trick was pretty eventful
 



0-0 half time, mentalist second half, Jack tricksy over the head volley goal? Yep, deffo the craziest Blades game I've been to. Added to it that we'd had a minor spot of disagreeability on the way to the ground......a (sort of) great day.

The Everest followed by a wander round Thorpe Hesley with a bottle of Whusky made it extra special though.
