Happy Birthday Mr Deane. Was a pleasure to watch you at the Lane and you were a genuine star player. Much better than he was given credit for by the general footballing world at large, but we Blades knew we had a top class player on our hands.

Remember the build up to the Sheffield derbies in the early 90s and whilst the more level headed of the Pigs respected our players like Jock and Hodges, they were always shitting themselves about Deano turning it on for us against them. We loved him, they hated him cos they were scared of him.

On a personal level, Brian always comes across as a humble and modest fella who is a lovely bloke with a heart of gold.

Have a very very happy Birthday Deano, and thanks again for all those goals and memories that you gave us Blades. Best wishes. ⚽👑👍

I never really got to see him apart from when he last returned when he was a out 38,but I saw a video other day on Facebook of all his goals for us and he looked fast strong and a bit gangly very hard to defend against.

He was deceptively quick (long strides taken with those long legs), excellent in the air, ridiculously skillful for a player of that size and could put a mean cross into the middle hit with pace and power (was just a shame he couldn't get on the end of his own crosses! though Jock did put a mean cross in also). He was just an all round very effective and dangerous centre forward to play against.

I always thought that Man Utd should have been after him in his prime, but he probably wasn't 'sexy' enough for them and they liked to spend shit loads on foreign players who were inferior to Deano but had a foreign sounding name. He'd have done very well at Old Trafford in the early 90s.

To be fair, when Deane was in his prime Man Utd only had two foreign players and neither of them were inferior.

Schmeichel and Cantona.

Not a bad two I suppose. But the point still stands. I don't think Deano was glamorous enough for the big boys at the table. Maybe his style put them off or maybe their self entitled fans would have been up in arms at the thought of their club signing a big bruising 'target man' when he would have been nothing of the sort.

I remember Man Utd going after Hirst around the same time and apparently being prepared to beat the British transfer record at the time (£4m fee mentioned) to get him. Whilst I would openly admit Hirst was a very good goalscorer and a more natural finisher than Deano, I know who was the better all round player by a country mile. Hirst would have been decent at the Lane if he was ours and Deano theirs, but he wouldn't have made United tick like Deano did. Hirst would have just been sat in the box waiting for their service to arrive. More often than not, Deano was the service and the goalscorer. Man Utd went after the wrong centre forward in Sheffield back then. Still, I'm glad they did.

Deano would have done well anywhere . Vastly underrated by those who didn’t know him .

Souness raved about him when he managed him at Benfica .
