for a lg 1 club ,asked to do a report on uniteds strengths and weaknesses
what would they be ?

mine would be lack of pace (aside from the 2 loanees ) play good football bit mentally weak when in front and have a keeper who will come for crosses and get nowhere near usually resulting in an undeserved goal for the opposition

Lack of professionalism under pressure, easily lose our shape and there is no leader.

I'd always try to exploit us at set pieces, we're extremely weak defensively at corners.

And I'd suggest that we lack fitness

- Goalkeeper doesn't command his area and makes mistakes when the ball is hit down his throat
- Centre backs poor against pace
- Defensively weak against corners, free kicks and long throws
- Once we concede we collapse (had Orient scored in the 85th minute yesterday we'd have lost)
- No width on the wings (even more so when Phillips goes back)

Do we really play good football? Really?

Simple answer is no.

One thing I've been encouraged by is how we attempt to move the ball around, sometimes it works quite well and he movement can be good. But in the games I've seen, we've not been consistent enough and has looked a mixture of great and shite.

Danny needs to start earning his money...

Unfortunately there are not that many out of contract at the end of the year. The notion that Wilson can rebuild when we offload cant happen as many are here for another few seasons and also the players he has brought in that have been really poor anyway and most of these are also on 2 year deals at least.

I believe Ched Evans is; Ertl is and Andy Taylor. Maybe Williamson but no others. The rest?

Out of the match day squad yesterday outside of the loannees and Evans/Williamson none of the others are out of contract.

Simonsen, Doyle, Francois, Collins, Monty, Porter, McDonald, Quinn, Cresswell all are contract until end of 2012/13. Scary.

Throw in Lowton and Maguire who have new long term contracts and we are stuck with what we have as outside of maybe Quinn and Monty who in their right mind would come for any of the others?!

That squad which we are apparently 'stuck with' should be good enough for promotion with a decent keeper behind them.

Good points DB. I thought there were more than that. Mind you, the out of contract players named would top £2M per year. I suppose that wold just be required cost cutting. I don't think any of the other players are saleable, bar Quinn.

On a positiev note, I think a fast forward and a decent keeper would transform many of the other players. On the negative side, it's depressing to see what a royally expensive bunch of averageness we've acquired.

Good enough to be in the mix, miles away from promotion certainties. Only Quinn and Williamson, on their days, are stand out performers in the third division. Promotion's still a tough ask given that.

Id tell him to get down to Orient and get his gob round one of their hot dogs.

The idea that this squad should be good enough to get promotion is baffling to me and the basis of it is what? It is not as if many of these players have been consistent footballers in recent years and most have proven the opposite; they are not good enough.

Yes they are on greater wages than most other teams and many have played at a higher level but there is a reason why they are playing down in league one; that is because essenitally noone any higher wants them. It was this squad or most of them that got us relegated and the heart of it; Collins, Montgomery, Cresswell, Evans, Quinn, Simonsen, Williamson, Lowton, Doyle played the large percentage of games last year and were not good enough. It was not just all about the loan players and the lack of continuity.

Why they suddenly are seen as too good for the division below is mystifying to me?

Everyone (including myself) keeps saying we should do better and the players are better than what they are showing. I am starting to think they are playing rubbish as in short they are rubbish on the whole. We have had 5 managers in a year and none of them have been able to get these into a winning side that performs consistently. None of the managers have stopped us leaking goals and none of them have been able to turn things around. They are some dreadful sides at this level but sadly we are not much better. Orient if anything were slightly better than us yesterday.

Basically our team has a losing/choking mentality and does need changing drastically. If we could start again with 0 players and build a team from scatch I would be delighted but sadly we are stuck with what we have as noone wants them. We are utterly broke but save for a small bid for Quinn not one of our players has received any/much interest from any other teams when we would sell them at the drop of a hat. That says it all for me.

so if you were asked to do a report on united strengths and weaknesses you would send someone (not sure who ) to go and have a hot dog at a football club in london ???

thanks for that

Yep. Thats why no one asks me to do them.

Whilst I take many of Deadbat's points on board, I think Sitwell is closer to the mark. There are a lot of problems with our squad but this is a poor division and even with the players we have we should finish in the top six if we do a little tweaking - which for me is signing someone to take Simonsen's place and getting someone in who is a better forward than the three stooges.

I don't think it's a team that will win automatic promotion without a major uptick in form, but given minor changes, we really should make the top six and then go on to lose the playoff final without scoring, probably against Wednesday knowing our luck.

Simonsen signed a 2 year contract in May 2010. He's definitely out of contract at the end of this season:-

For those saying that we can't afford to sign a new keeper while Simonsen is on the books. What would we do if he got injured?
We'd have to sign somebody then, so why can't Wilson go to McCabe and say I need a new keeper NOW.
Invent a face-saving injury for Simonsen if necessary but he needs to be taken out of the firing line while we still have promotion to aim for.

Im sure they would be a few put their names forward on here to give him the injury. Be just like escape to victory so Sly could play.

There is a scene in Escape to victory where the Allied team break their own keepers arm to get Stallone back on the team...

...just saying like...

Somehow thought he has signed a 3 year deal but you are right we may only have a few more months of misery left!

Yes we need to sign a keeper on loan and fast. Antoher mistake tomorrow will see his postion completely untenable. In reality he should have been dropped ages ago and already at that stage.

Let's hope you got few of the other contract lengths wrong. I thought there was a mass exodus at season'e end. All but Cresswell, where we sensibly gave the young whipper snapper a bulging 4 year deal.

Thought Collins nearly crippled him on Saturday but it seems he managed to recover from that.

Long deserves a chance no matter what anyone else says and if he isn't good enough then send him out on loan. I bet its destroying his confidence watching Simmo fuck up week in week out.

We do seem to playing slightly more clever and fancy football at times BUT like everyone has said it isnt consistent enough to kill teams off.

No, Deadbat was right about the others.
Of the first teamers Evans, Ertl, Taylor, Williamson, McDonald and Simonsen are out of contract in June 2012.
Also, Parrino, McAllister, Conneely and Aksalu.
If none of them can get in the first team by January, we might as well see if we can offload them for a small fee.

How desperate are we for simmo to fuck up in the next match,it could cost us big-time,but at least then he would def be dropped.but if he don't fuck up and the blades win he would probably get another 10/20 error strewn games.

im not so sure if he did cost us the points again he would get dropped
