The honours were shared at Bramall Lane as the home side somehow threw away a two goal lead with less than 10 minutes to play to concede two unbelievably sloppy goals and leave the blue and white side of the city celebrating like they had won the game. Goals from Stephen Quinn and Ched Evans put United in control and although Wednesday had chances the home side seemed to have the game sewn up but a mixture of poor goalkeeping and arguably questionable refereeing saw the Owls get a point. Maybe a draw was a fair score line on reflection but having led for so long in the game; United will be desperately disappointed to have conceded so late. It was a game that featured little in the way of skill nor ability and was very scrappy and physical for much of the contest.

The Blades started with new loan signings Matt Phillips and Billy Clarke beginning on the bench. Wednesday who had won 4 straight were unchanged with former Blades loanee Danny Batth amongst their ranks and leading scorer Gary Madine up top.

The Blades began the game winning a corner and soon after they had genuine appeals for a penalty as Johnson seemed to push Williamson over but the referee waved away the home appeals. Wednesday had a few half chances from Marshall’s long throws but Maguire defended well under pressure and from the next meaningful attack from the Blades they took the lead. McDonald came forward and threaded a though ball into the path of Evans. The striker advanced and hit a low shot that was deflected onto the post from Jones but as the ball came out QUINN was able to smash it high into the net before celebrating wildly with his teammates.

Wednesday ought to have been level when Simonsen spilt an innocuous header from Madine but O’Grady somehow hit the post via the keeper on the rebound when it looked easier to score. United were to make them pay a minute later as they won a free kick out wide and from Williamson’s powerful and precise delivery; EVANS got in front of his man and nodded down and in at the Kop end. United fans went berserk as the formbook before the game was seemingly being thrown out of the window.

Cresswell had another effort straight at Bywater and then United had a let off when O’Connor headed over when well positioned. Marshall then had an effort that deflected onto the bar and over before the game threatened to boil over with a series of bookings with Montgomery, Buxton and Cresswell all going into the referees notebook. Wednesday had a half chance but Batth miskicked and then a good spell from United saw Lowton, Williamson and Evans combine before the ball was crowded to safety. Despite a fairly open first half United will have been delighted when the half time whistle went that saw them in command.

The second half saw Megson withdraw O’Connor in favour of a more attacking look with Jermaine Johnson coming on to play wide down the right. The half began in scrappy fashion with little chances of note or football on offer but Wednesday won two quick free kicks in succession after fouls from Maguire and Evans but neither effort troubled Simonsen with one in the wall and the other over the bar. Evans was booked for his challenge.

Madine headed over at the back post when Wednesday had a man over as United started to defend deeper and were struggling to keep possession. Wilson opted to make a change and brought on Phillips for his debut for Williamson but United continued to concede the ball and another half chance saw Madine blocked out by Maguire. It seemed as if United were seeing the game out and Simonsen had not had a save to make in the second half despite some chances coming for the visitors but they were given a lifeline with just under 10 minutes to play.

The ball came across and as Maguire headed away Jones won the second ball and sent it towards the United goal. The ball was flicked in off the bar by the alert O’GRADY as Simonsen dithered and Wednesday were back in the game. The United keeper was appealing for an offence but there were no appeals from any of his teammates.

It was now game on and Wednesday came straight back at United who were sitting deeper and deeper. Suddenly balls were going into the United box and from another high ball the visitors were suddenly level. It was another ball that should have been deal and it may have seem as if Johnson had impeded Simonsen as three Wednesday players converged on the high ball but MADINE won the header. The ball spans goalwards and hit the post and as McDonald tried to clear the ball bounced into the net. It was probably an own goal but Madine ran away claiming the goal. The United players appealed but many of the home fans were blaming their keeper as much as the young referee as Wednesday celebrated the unlikely escape.
It seemed as if Wednesday now felt they could win the game and actually had a chance at the death as the game moved into four minutes of stoppage time. A cross from the right saw Jones head goalwards but fortunately it was straight at Simonsen. The game ended not long after as United’s winless streak continued that sees them out of touch with not only the front two but also out of the playoff zone with a tough game to Preston to come.

United – A game that we basically threw away. We maybe were not dominant and Wednesday had their chances even in the first half but to be 2-0 up with less than 10 minutes to go and chuck away two goals that would not have looked out of place in the Sunday league was really poor. However, just as against Huddersfield and Charlton the high ball is continuing to cause way more problems than it should and leading to goals going in. Simonsen is simply a liability and whilst some refs may have given a foul for the second he still has to be stronger and there is countless other times when he has come and not got fouled. Every time teams knock it into the six yard box you worry. Surely Wilson can see this and we have to replace him? How many more goals are we going to concede that are his fault? He got lucky on another one in the first half and they nearly scored a winner when he was rooted to his line at the end again.

For the first half we actually started well and scored one well taken goal from a scramble after it got deflected onto the post and then an excellent second goal and we seemed ok despite them having a few chances. The second half seemed to be going well in terms of Wednesday having few chances and despite us sitting back and not really keeping the ball enough they did not look like coming back but you felt as soon as they scored they would get at least a draw and so it proved. If we had hung on for another 2 or 3 minutes we would probably have seen the game out but we keep chucking away daft goals. The number of times I see Simonsen running out with his arm up appealing for a foul now....well they cannot all be fouls. He is not strong enough and not commanding at all. Why did he not just run into the Wednesday man and take him out? Why did he not flatten him? Why did he not stay on his line if he was not going to get there? Only he knows and Wilson must know he is costing us goals every week. Today of all days I wanted him to prove me wrong but sadly he could not do that and did exactly what I thought he would and let us down.

Maybe I am being way too harsh laying all the blame at him and we should have defended higher up, kept the ball more, maybe gone for the jugular more but the only way Wednesday looked like scoring was from high balls or set plays?

United do look a little power puff at times and you felt if the game had gone on another 5 minutes we may have lost. The belief and confidence went completely when it went 2-1 and you felt there was no belief we could hang on. United were time wasting ridiculously from 2-0 in the first half and some ways got exactly what they deserved. Instead of passing the ball and trying to get at a poor Wednesday defence and very slow side (as slow as us and that is saying something!) we sat back and started going long ourselves. I felt Wilson changed it too soon unless Williamson was injured and the Evans withdrawal was also mystifying. I would have put Williamson inside and took off Cresswell for Phillips and tightened up the middle. I also would have given the lad Clarke a run if we were changing the striker as Porter offered us nothing different.

United look a side destined for mid to lower mid table side at worst; around 8th-10th at best. I find it hard to see how we will be around the top 6 going on current performances/issues defensively. We cannot defend simple balls into the box, struggle to create and whilst at times we play nice tip tap football look essentially powder puff. There is little in the current personnel to change any of that and Wilson does seem quite stubborn in his approach to things which sadly whilst has seen us play more football will matter nothing if we cannot keep goals out or score goals. I felt we could have been 3-0 up with 10 minutes left and still not been comfortable with the keeper and lack of confidence the backline had. Another game without a win (that is now 1 win in 6 is it?) and with tough games to come against Preston and MK Dons; I fear it could get worse before it gets better. Hopefully the new loan signings will make a difference but they will go back if they do well and it is more short term-ism. I fear it could be a few years before we can properly plan for the future and high earners/dead wood like Simonsen, Collins, Cresswell, Doyle, Evans are off our books. Worryingly the players brought in on 2 year deals such as Porter and Flynn look even worse! I would be tempted to look at tome more youngsters such as Harriott, Philliskirk and Tonne as we need some pace, hunger and enthusiasm and some of the players above need to realise if they play poorly they won’t play the next week. Sadly the likes of Simonsen and Cresswell keep getting picked most weeks as they know those behind them are not good enough or too inexperienced.

Wednesday – They deserved a point for chances and for what they had in the game but they really ought to have gone away with nothing. Megson is factually wrong saying they had more possession (stats show us having more) but he is right that they had more chances and efforts on goal. However, to say they were the better side for most of the game is also wrong in my opinion. They actually looked out of the game for long periods of the second half and only got back into it but lumping it into the box.

They are a percentage team and remind me so much of the side we had under Bassett in that they basically get the ball from back to front very quickly and then get on the loose balls that the big strikers win/knock down. They have little in the way of technical ability (aside from the winger Marshall) and their best tactics are often get the ball in the last third as quick as they can and then win knock downs or win throws or corners. From these they pile more giants into the box and create chances. It is absolutely horrible to watch but it is effective and will see them beat most teams at this level. I don’t think they have played much football to get up the league but does it matter? I would rather be where they are. They are clearly a very physical team and only a few of their players are under 6 foot.

It is ironic that Wednesday fans always laud this superb football they played under Ron Atkinson and also Francis but their most effective sustained long period of top flight football in recent years where they were successful and near the top for a number of years was under Howard Wilkinson and a very direct style. It is this type of football that many United fans have been sick of watching but it is the same style that will get their rivals up going by current form and results.

Unfortunately as Radio Sheffield’s summarisers said, they do look more equipped for promotion than us despite the style being uneasy on the eye. They have a bigger and better squad and will win more battles than United. They will batter some teams with their approach and much worse teams than us will get bullied into submission.
They have much more strength in depth than us with 4 strikers in Madine, O’Grady, McGoldrick and also Lowe. These would arguable start for most teams in the division. Madine and O’Grady were a handful as much for their size and physique although the latter did try and play football at times. The former was not that impressive but has obviously been scoring goals so must be doing something right.

I do think the likes of Batth and Jones are lower league players who will probably be enough to get them out of this league (heading and kicking away) but that at a higher level they would really struggle. I found it funny to hear Wednesday players praising Jones after the game when I felt he looked like a pub player. He was so clumsy and slow but sadly at this level if you are big and strong often that is enough. Johnson at left back also looks woefully immobile and clumsy too but to be fair the lad in midfield Semedo looks decent and Marshall is impressive on the ball (only real footballer they had who wanted to get on the ball and pass it – not just lump it).

However, if they get up they can then replace them with new players. Megson and Mandaric has definitely gone for short termish with signing like Jones and Lowe (lower league players and not exactly young) to try and get them up. If it works then it will have been a good move. If they don’t get up they have ageing players with little sell on value. They certainly don’t have much youth in their team (outside of loan players they have brought in and maybe Palmer) and will have to rely on Mr Mandaric pulling the purse strings. Their strategy is risky in that when Milan decides to walk will they have any foundation in place to keep going and trying to get up the leagues (very poor academy and little in the way of development of players of their own).

Simonsen 3/10 – I feared the worst after having seen some disastrous performances against teams with big strikers or who put the ball in the box. Wednesday have both qualities and will have known his major weakness at taking or coming for the high ball. Set plays I also felt could be an issue and so it transpired. He spilled one in the first half that should have been a comfortable save and then was to blame somewhat for both of the two goals. The first one he was so slow to react to the first header and came and did not get there meaning he was in effect in ‘no mans land.’ The second may have been a foul but he should have just smashed through the Wednesday player/s. There would never have been a foul given the other way but is so weak in coming and as soon as the balls come in you never think he will get there. He has to be replaced and fast. Long is not ready but we need a keeper who commands his box and can actually come and catch/punch high balls. I actually felt Collins and Maguire were ok today save for an odd lapse but with this clown behind them you will always concede.

Lowton 7/10 – Better game from him today overall after some poor games in recent weeks and although he was faced with a tough winger in Marshall I felt he did ok save for a spell in the second half where he got beat twice for pace/skill. Looked good going forward in the first half and was involved in some of our better attacks. He does need to get tighter to his man though and really concentrate on his defensive play as he gives his winger a bit too much space.

Williams 7/10 – Sound enough game. He did the basics well and overall stopped the winger getting many crosses in or get ball. He is a neat and today footballer that defends first and foremost. I felt he stopped both Lines (in the first half) and then Johnson in the second from getting many chances. He does lack height and at times this was a problem at the back post. However, I feel he would be a good permanent signing if we could get him.

Maguire 6.5/10 – Decent enough game but errored on the first goal. He ought to have done better as he headed it back into the danger area rather than away. Felt he coped fairly well with their front two and was able to play football when he could although his penchant for the long diagonal ball is getting quite frustrating. He really could do with an imposing player alongside him or an imposing keeper behind him but sadly has neither even though Collins did ok today.

Collins 7/10 – Thought he was better than in recent weeks and overall was fairly commanding and mistake free. Maybe he could have attacked the ball on the equaliser when it came in but then again you would expect your keeper to take control there especially as a defender you are going backwards. It was maybe the one time I wanted one of the centre backs to not wait for his keeper though. To be fair to Collins he had won a lot of aerial ball all game and done well but the law of averages said they would get goals from high balls and it proved.

Williamson 7.5/10 – Thought that was his best game for a while. He got up and down, worked hard and was involved in a lot of our good attacking play. Great free kick for the second goal and also played a few other really dangerous crosses/balls into the box. Not sure if was injured when he went off but did not deserve to go off if not. Needs to show that kind of hunger and ability every week.

Montgomery 6/10 – Felt the game would be ideal for him but at times it seemed to just pass him by. He won a few tackles/blocks etc but often I felt he was just running around without really achieving anything. He snapped and harried but often gave it away when he had won it. Needed a cool head at the end and not him hacking the ball skywards which actually led to their second goal when if we could have kept it a bit longer?

McDonald 6/10 – Up and down. Did some decent things on the ball but all too often seemed behind the play and off the pace. Looks sadly unfit and with his lack of pace he often is always chasing opponents. He needs to be more imposing and get on the ball more and dictate as at times he shows he is a class footballer. You can see why he is not playing higher up the leagues despite his ability; as he does not impose himself enough on games. In the second half he was not really in it despite a few glimpses on the ball and felt we conceded too much possession and ball...

Quinn 7/10 – Strange game as at times he showed some real class with some clever runs and passes but sometimes his touch was also off and he did not quite click with his teammates. Took his goal very well as it was a more difficult chances than it looked. Played a few great crosses/balls in the second half which you expect our players to get on the end of but they did not read his play.

Cresswell 5/10 – Never in the game I felt from start to finish and looks so woefully slow these days. Often he is so slow to control or get it down and turn he allows players to get back. He works hard and tries to lead the line but lacks strength and heading ability to be a real threat. Should have come off on the hour and we maybe should have stiffened up the midfield area but how he stayed on was a mystery as he was blowing from the hour mark and looked shattered. A player that is sadly on his last legs and one that should be only used sparingly now.

Evans 7/10 – Thought he looked the best centre forward on display much of the game and was mystified why he came off as he looked to be causing problems all day with his touch and movement. Scored an excellent headed goal and had a few other half chances. Maybe tired in the second half and was not seeing as much of the ball but still offered more than Cresswell.

Subs –

Phillips – Made one good run down the wing when he beat his man and showed a few other nice bits of skills but would probably not have put him on with his leading and seemingly in control. Meant we lost some of the defensive cover we had down the left.

Porter – Came on and did very little. Gave away 2 fouls and looked off the pace. Sad that we have to choose between him and Cresswell when in reality neither are good enough. A really poor signing that has been a waste of the little resources we have.

Officials – Michael Oliver. A young ref who has been fast tracked to the top league. I was concerned he may want to show ‘who he was’ today and so it proved. At times the game seemed to get away from him. He should have booked a few of their players early for ugly challenges on Quinn; a player they had clearly sought to ‘get’. McDonald for us also should have been booked for persistent fouling and how he did not get booked was beyond me. He booked Evans for jumping into his man but did not penalise several other players on both sides for such fouls. I felt Wednesday centre backs went through our strikers often and always but he was not giving them so United’s players should have given them some back but sadly did not.

As for the big decisions; well it looked a good shout for a penalty early on from us but to be fair to the ref the linesman was probably closer to it. He has let continual pushing and shoving in the box go and it was no surprise he did not give the one at the end. I have watched it back on TV and I think 7 or 8 times out of 10 refs give that. They have jumped into the keeper (2 of them; mainly Johnson) and for all the criticism I have given our keeper it is one of those that is usually given. He looked like he was going to give it then decided not to. It was a big call and one that cost us the points. I still feel the keeper should have been stronger but you can see why Wilson was so upset as the player has gone into the keeper. For O’Grady to say it’s not netball it is a physical sport is fair enough but I don’t think Johnson got the ball he got the man; this allowed Madine to win the header. I felt he was poor for much of the game the referee and let some quite ugly things go and then at others seemed very fussy. As Wilson says a very odd choice to give such a young referee such a game.

Crowd/Atmosphere – I actually did not think it was that noisy for a lot of the game and for a 2-2 game was fairly subdued. Weds fans made a bit of noise early and then United fans made a bit of noise when we went 2-0 up and of course we heard their fans at the end but it was not the raucous atmosphere we have seen in some of these games before. United fans were probably so quiet as they knew United could snatch defeat/draw from the clutches of victory and the nervousness was palatable. Wendesday fans kept going just before and after half time but even they were muted until the late goals. I heard a few Wednesday fans saying how we could not fill all the seats but I remember 3 or 4 games in the mid 2000’s at Hillsborough where they were thousands of empty blue seats (granted a bigger ground but the point remains that they could not fill their stadium either).

agree with all of that db.. interesting how most of the empty seats were on the lane end.. teams have worked out that if you put the ball under the bar you have a chance.. we totally bossed the second half until wilson took williamson off.. i don't think it was a game to give out favours to new players but i suppose it 'was' 2 0 at the time .. removing ched was mind boggling.. if we are to do anything in this league we need morgan back and get a different keeper..basically simmo is 'below' his depth here.. he is a good shot stopper but is used to premier style treatment for the high ball that he just won't get down here.. and he knows it. all of the goals he lets in are at the kop end because he is under scrutiny.. after every goal he goes running to the ref.. collins was livid after the second goal.. still predict 8th

I was at the back of the kop right hand side as you face the pitch, atmosphere was cracking and I thought the kop as a whole was banging. Couldn't get to my seat as I didn't get to the ground until 2 minutes befor kick off and ended up standing in the gangway with dozens of others, nightmare for the stewards but it really added to the whole experience and when we scored everyone was leaping around like loons, just like old times with standing terraces. Second half found my seat and the atmosphere was killed a bit. I hate seating as it really sanitises the whole experience, the sooner standing terraces are re-introduced the better. Sitting in rows, silly bloody mascots and music to welcome the players is soooooooo American

Agreed. After what looked like an injury early on, i thought he was excellent today...

I can't recall any of the central midfielders for either side standing out. Seriously thought all 4 were quite poor. The lack of passing, touch and vision on show was quite shocking and shows why both teams are where they are. Strangley both teams were better from set plays but two poor defences contriobuted to that.

Monty 6/10? Thought he was one of our better players today.

Aye and he was the player looking to get the ball on the ground and look for a pass most.

Numerous times he won the ball and spread it out wide second half, memories faded on the first half.

I agree with you. I'm not a big Monty fan generally, but thought he had a good game today and looked as though he desperately wanted to win. His workrate was top notch, but I feel he still lets himself down with his lack of passing ability on occasions.

My main concern is why we always sit back and try and hang on to results. In the second half we should have gone for the throat. Defensively they're not great and another goal early on in that half would've killed them off. Instead, sitting back too much and seemingly giving possession too often away cost us all three points.

Took a lot of positives from yesterday despite the disappointment.

I genuinely feel we have the basis of a decent side but we still need another forward.

The ball just isnt sticking up top. This was and has been a major problem.

Ched showed some promise but he needed a solid centre forward alongside to ease the burden.

I had to laugh at some of the fictional accounts of the first half from their fans.

Their opinions on football are of no consequnce to me, despite the hilarity.

i've been thinking about this and have decided that we are useless for the ball over the top or when the defense are going BACKWARDS ie toward goal.. collins and macguire are both good at coming onto the ball but if they are back peddling then simmonsen will stand on his line instead of coming for it.. we need 1. new goal poacher to support evans.. cressy is done and porter is useless..2.morgan back and 3.a keeper used to the physical aspect of div 3 football.:fatbastard:

i thought montgomery was useless the bit just before their goal where if he would have showed just a little composure he could have set us up 4 v 2 but decided to just boot it straight back to their keeper and concede possesion sums him up for me
how old is he now ? and he still has the composure of a 12 yr old ,in fact he looked a better player when he first broke into the team ,he doesnt learn

Wilsons substitutions were mind-boggling. How the hell a totally in-effective Cresswell stayed on for 90 mins is beyond me. If Williamson wasn't injured then he should have stayed on, it was his best game for ages. Also, we have the worst ball watching defenders i've ever seen. Every time the ball is out wide, our players simply look at the ball and not what is happening around them hence there's always two or three players unmarked, especially at the back stick.

Travelling back from South Yorkshire to London and thought I’d jot down my thoughts on yesterday. Not much to do on the train from Donny to Kings Cross, so I’ll share my opinion on what happened at Bramall Lane yesterday. I’ve time to reflect and plenty of time to think about the events. Plenty of ale was supped yesterday afternoon and my opinions were firmed up through plenty of discussion and debate with different Unitedites. Not sure how much value I will add, as Deadbat has written an excellent match report (though we disagree on a few points) and I had a glance at the forum this morning before leaving my parents and saw that there were plenty of threads and some strong opinions. Anyway, here’s my two penneth on the derby game.

This was only Ollessendro’s second trip to Bramall Lane this season and fifth time watching United this term. The mixed form and mixture of positives and negatives continued as United were held by Wednesday at Bramall Lane. I was shitting myself before kick off and feared a Wednesday victory. My prediction was score draw, but the away team may edge it and a goal would win it either way. I thought it might come down to an individual mistake, but also thought we could win if we took our chances. I’d have taken 2-2 before the game, but to throw away the points in the manner we did was sickening. I felt completely deflated after the game, as with 10 minutes to go we seemed to be cruising and then we just crumbled.

After leading for such a long period of time and seeming to be in control then to let Wednesday back in has to be criticised. The bottom line is that we threw away the points and let a physical side bully us. Rather than playing to our strengths we got dragged into a hoof-off and Wednesday benefitted from this. I have no complaints with the overall result as I think it was fair, in fact Wednesday probably edged it. They had more chances and caused us more problems, but United led for 90-95% of the game.

Crimes against hoof

Unfortunately there were not enough in this category. Yesterday was not a great advertisement for the beautiful game. Entertaining it certainly was. But it was a very direct game. The list under crimes against football could be much longer. If I was to single out 2 United players that tried to play the game I would pick Lee Williamson and Kevin McDonald. I thought both midfielders tried to get the ball down on the deck and always made themselves available.

Williamson linked up well with Lowton in the first half and we got a lot of joy down the left. It was Williamsons free kick that Evans converted and he had the beating of the left back. Down in the left corner in front of the kop in the first half I thought Williamson looked good. The left back had a really torrid time and resorted to simply battering Williamson to stop him playing. I was not sure it was the right decision to take Williamson off when he did.

McDonald is a class act when he gets on the ball. For the most part him and Monty won the midfield battle and I thought when McDonald got on the ball things happened yesterday. McDonald makes himself available and almost always finds a red and white shirt. He battled hard yesterday and showed he has a different side to his game and can stick his foot in. He did tire late on and gaps started to appear. I would probably have taken him off with 10 mins to go and had Doyle on to bolster things. That said we had a spell with 15 minutes to go when we held the ball and McDonald was prominent in that.

Crimes against football

Gary Megson takes the award for chief crime against football. I waited in the car park yesterday for an hour or so in order to make a citizens arrest on Megson for heinous crimes against the beautiful game. It was like we’d been taken back in time to the late 80’s and Wimbeldon were wearing red and white. I had to squint to make sure that the black players wearing Wednesday shirts were not John Fashnu, Robbie Earle and Marcus Gayle. Was that Beasent in goal or did it say Bywater on the back? Unfortunately Megson’s brand of direct ‘football’ is quite effective, But the cynical, dirty hoofball tactics that his team adopted sickened me. Wedensday players going down under every challenge (in order to lump free kicks into the box), the horrible long throws and the physical aspect (elbows flailing, manhandling of our players, kicks and late challenges). The whole Wednesday team could be mentioned in this category, but Megson orchestrated this and had them playing to their strengths.

Steve Simmonsen deserves a mention in this category for his awful distribution that gave away possession on countless occasions. In the first half he did not roll the ball out once and kicked every time. Each kick was a waste and gave Wednesday possession. The two big lumps lapped up Simmonsen’s hoofs and Evans and Cresswell did not win a single header all afternoon. Lowton and Williams tried to offer options, but SS waved them away and kicked long. This did get better in the second half (Wilson obviously spotted it and told him at half time) but it was still not enough., What happened to him rolling the ball out to the centre and full backs on every occasion?

United

We let ourselves get outmuscled by a big, strong side yesterday. Not only this, but we did not play to our strengths. When we passed the ball around we looked far superior to Wednesday. However we did not do it enough. We had a few spells, particularly a 5 minute spell at the end of the first half, were we tore Wednesday apart by playing a passing game. When we kept the ball on the deck and got McDonald on the ball we looked at our best, Lowton and Williamson where playing some good stuff down the right and Evans and Cresswell looked dangerous when the ball was played into feet. However we resorted to hoof all too often got sucked into a battle with Wednesday.

The positive from yesterday is that we took our chances. Unlike Charlton and Huddersfield we actually stuck the ball in the net. We were not much better than Wednesday in the first half, but lead because we took our chances. For once we were clinical. The problem is that we switched off and gave away sloppy goals, We never looked comfortable defending set pieces or long throws and it was no surprise when they finally got some joy from them. To be fair they probably should have scored earlier, as they missed numerous chances. There are some positive signs that if we play the passing game then we’ll get some joy. However it is really worrying that teams are outmuscling us and we are simply letting them. Another major concern is team are targeting Simmonsen (and the defence) and putting me in the box and the ball in the 6 yard box. We’ve already lost points from this happening and I suspect we’ll lose more until SS’s contract expires next summer.

Wednesday

What a despicable, horrible, cynical, dirty, awful, turgid style of football they play. Of course I am partisan and I am going to say this, but what a horrible long ball game they play. They have a huge side and I guess are playing to their advantages, but it really is awful to watch. They are big and strong but they lack skill and mobility. It was hoof, hoof and more hoof,. The cynical aspect really pissed me off too. They kicked lumps out of our players, but were very quick to go down under any contact. Of course the resulting free kick saw all the big lads in the box and the ball lumped in. Any throw in in our half and the Rory De Lap style throw came in. You could argue that they got it spot on tactically and that it is effective, but it felt like cheating to me. It all had a little bit of Blackwell to it. Horrible long ball football ….. but effective.

My mate texted me in the evening and said Wednesday had 18 attempts on goal to our 6. Thinking back I remember them having a lot more chance. They hit the post from a header in the first half (where Simmo spilled), SS tipped a fiersome shot over the bar, O’Conner missed a free header (a massive chance) from 8 yards out and Madine had a great chance from a header that went just over. Madine looked dangerous, particularly aerially, but I was not that impressed with them. Their big defenders are good at heading, but looked exposed when it was played to Evans and Cresswell’s feet (or Williamson/Lowton ran at them).

I actually felt that if Wednesday had have pressed more after their second, then they might have gone on to win it. They looked the much likelier team to score. They took the points and sat back. However a few balls into the box, another long thrown or a set piece and they might have nicked all 3 points. They sat back and took a point, but I feared they might even steal all 3 in the last few minutes.

Wilson – tactics

I was surprised with his team selection yesterday and that he played Williamson wide right. However when United were 2 nowt up after 20 mins I thought ‘well he knows better than me’. I actually thought Wilson got it slightly wrong yesterday and his game plan did not work. It was clear early doors that we were a better footballing side would benefit from playing it open the deck. We had a few spells where we tore Wednesday apart, but they were few and far between. For me Wilson did not do enough to convey the message to his players. Simmonsen should have rolled the ball out a lot more, the defence encouraged to pass it around and we should have just kept the ball. All too often we aimlessly pumped it forward and there were often options available. At 2 nil up all we needed to do was keep the ball. If we have possession then they cannot score, Simples. But Monty, Harry, Collins and Lowton all too often when for the diagonal ball (hoof) and the Wednesday defenders lapped it up and they came straight back at us.

I’ll begrudgingly say that his counterpart Megson got it spot on. It really pains me to say it, but they played to their strengths and got a result. He knew United were a better footballing side, but Wednesday had the physical advantage. He tried to get United involved in a hoof war/battle and it worked. United were not smart enough to play football and played right into Wednesday’s hands.

Players – ratings

A quick look at DB’s ratings and it seems I am a lot harsher and we disagree on a few performances.

Simmonsen 3.5/10: A poor performance from SS, that ultimately cost us the match. He was in real dithery mode early on and despite a few decent saves and even a couple of catches/punches, I felt he might implode. He dropped the ball and was unfortunate for it not to go in (first half he made a decent save and then seemed to spill it and it hit the post). He made a very good save first half (tipping a shot over) but never really comfortable. I could not see whether it was a foul or not, but it looked to me like he flapped at the ball. For such as big guy (he must be 6 foot 3) who has so much experience (and he can use his hands) I cannot understand why he is so bad in the air. His dithering and flapping has cost us points and will continue to do so. The worst part is that he is probably the highest paid keeper in the league and hence is is undroppable. Wilson can see that he is costing us points and I would be surprised if he does not try to address this.

Lowton 4.5/10: Typical Lowton performance. He looked great going forward, but was poor defensively. He really linked up with Williamson and they got a lot of joy. But defensively he switches off and often gives his man too much time and space. He got easily beaten on a couple of occasions.

Williams 6/10: decent performance, though he struggled with the height of some of the Wednesday players. He did the basics right defensively (take note Lowton) and got forward when possible. However he is not tall and Wednesday exposed this. On a couple of occasions Madine pulled off to the back post and out jumped Williams. One of them (a header) he should have buried.

Collins 6.5/10: Our best defender yesterday and a good shout for United's best player. He showed his experience and lead by example. If he plays like that for the rest of the season I will be happy. Thought he had a really good game, other than possibly the last few minutes. I was surprised to see him trying to clear the ball off the line, rather than jumping to head it for Wednesday’s second. Collins dealt well with the aerial bombardment and was often the one heading clear the long throw in’s. I thought he made a few crucial tackles too. On a few occasions I though Madine outmuscled him, but not much came of these.

Maguire 6/10: Thought he coped reasonably well with the aerial bombardment. However he let his man free a couple of times and let the ball bounce. Thought the big, experienced Madine gave him a bit of a hard time too. He did not shy away though and made some decent tackles/blocks and also ran the ball out of defence on a couple of occasions.

Williamson 6.5/10: Thought he had a good game and was sorry to see him go off. His free kicks and corners were pretty effective and he linked up well with Lowton. The Wednesday winger (Marshall?) was not supporting his full back and Lowton/Williamson really exploited this. All our joy in the first half came down the right and Willo was involved. He showed a decent touch, good vision (linking up with Cressy/Evans) and worked hard. One of his better games. Perhaps he was starting to fade second half (he was not in the game) and that’s why he was taken off.

McDonald 5.5/10: A pretty good game, though I would have liked him to get in the game more. First half he put his foot on the ball a few times and made some good passes. He also showed another side to his game by putting in a few decent tackles. Him and Monty won the central midfield battle for the most part (being first to most things for most of the game) but he started to tire late on. He gave the ball away a few times and looked off the pace in the last 10/15.

Montgomery 5.5/10: Typical Monty performance. He made some good tackles and won a lot of possession for us. However his distribution was poor. His touch is shocking and he has a tendency to hoof it forward. Wilson really needs to speak to him and telling to keep it simple. Go backward if you have to, but stop the aimless puts. He did work very hard and up until the last few minutes got the better of the Wednesday midfield.

Quinn 4.5/10: Thought he was off the pace (again) yesterday. He looked lively early on and score, but then disappeared. Did no0t think he attacked the full back enough and don’t really remember him doing much of note. He does get forward and support the attackers well, but had a quiet game.

Evans 6/10: Decent game for Ched. He scored a very good header and his shot lead to the first goal. He looked lively and worked hard. He put a shift in and closed down their defenders. He did not win much in the air against the Wednesday man mountains at tha back, but when he got it into his feet he looked good. He faded second half, but a lot of that was down to the tactics (hoof).

Creswell 5/10: Worked hard, but it never quite came off for him. Offered a good first line of defence, but struggled against the big Wednesday centre halves. First half he got the ball to feet a few times and this worked well. But second half it was lumped up to him and he never stood a chance. Particularly as the ref seemed perfectly happy for the Wednesday defence to manhandle him, but was quick to blow the other way for the slightest infraction.

Subs: Thought Phillips was disappointing. He made a good start by skinning the Wednesday left back straight after he came on. However after that he did not do. He did not use his pace again, often got muscled off the ball and held onto it longer than he should have. Maybe a little harsh, as there was not a lot of movement and he often had to go backwards. Porter was not on the pitch long enough to make an impact.

Ref/Officials

Thought the referee and his officials were poor today, They let Wednesday play a dirty and cynical game yesterday. Wednesday kicked lumps out of United and the referee did very little to deter it. He spotted a few fouls, but left many go. Not only that, but when he pulled Wednesday players up he did not book them, He missed a blatant penalty early on (elbow in Williamson’s face by Wednesdays big thug of a left back), dithered before letting Wednesday’s second goal and made some strange decisions. Despite Wednesday kicking lumps out of United he was quick to book United players for very little. Cresswell made an excellent tackle and was booked, yet Wednesday left back battered Williamson and was involved in several argy bargies and it went unpenalised. I was disappointed by how he fell for Wednesday’s tactics of diving at every opportunity, in order to lump the ball in the box. The two assistants did little to stop this either. In fact one of the Wednesday players made several foul throws and was not penalised.

Ale

I was searching for real football and I found one of the two. Safe to say which (I sank a lot of ale this weekend). With the weather being reasonable plenty of pale ale got sank. My favourite ales were:
- Wentworth Pale Ale: Excellent award winning pale ale from the brewery in Barnsley.
- Tangled Up: At 5.8 this has a real kick. It’s a really smooth pale ale though, but has a bite to it.
- Thornbridge Jaipur: it may be ‘commercialised’, but it really is a classic. An excellent, strong and light ale. It’s hoppy, almost spicey and is really refreshing.
- Acorn Old Moor Porter: really nice liquorice flavoured porter. A creamy drink that has to be served through a sparkler.

Ollessendro’s final thoughts

There were more negatives than positives unfortunately. We let another team come to our ground and physically dominate us. We did not play to our strengths and we threw away a lead. We did have a few spells of good football and were fairly clinical with our chances. But we did not get the ball on the deck enough and got bullied by Wednesday. They created more chances and had more clear opportunities. On another day they would have beat us. But we looked comfortable for long stages and then threw it away. Like I said, it was a fair result and I’d have taken a draw beforehand. But we cannot defend the way we did and throw away points in that fashion. 2 points lost really.

Atmosphere

Sat on the kop and the atmosphere was excellent (disagree with Deadbat again here). It is by far the noisiest I have seen the Lane in recent years and it was nice to see an almost full stadium. I thought the United fans made a lot of noise, particularly first half (after the 2 goals). This faded a little second half, but I left with sore throat and I think many others did.

2 good reports thanks lads, but Monty not given credit for what he does imo, but simmo has to go!!!!

good repoer ollie ,i would disagree on a few things i.e the criticism of our centre halves who i though were the best footballers on the p
ark and to me mcdonald looked lazy and very rarely touched the ball i also thought mongy showed his shortcomings by not using his supposed experience to use the ball better but i dont expect anything from him now so im rarely dissapointed

Call Monty all you want but whenever he plays we look more solid down the middle.

The opposition find it much harder to play through us as he gives us more presence.

He also gives his midfield partner more freedom, he works well with Kmac imo.

Certainly he is not the most composed and the most technically gifted.

He presses players and gets into positions where he can engage the opposition.

The combative side of his game is excellent in my view and he gets little credit for it.

I agree ,what little was played in midfield yesterday was mainly won by Macdoald and Montgomery we looked better and stronger than when doyle plays. I know Quinn seems to get it off me all the time but he frustrates me so much ,he has the ablilty but he disappeared second half when the game was made for him to take the game to them especially when the full back got booked. To give him more marks than Montgomery is misguided in my opinion.

Just had a look at the stats. United had 51% possession which sounds about right.

The piggies can fantasise about having dominated the game all they want. The stats disagree.

We had 6 efforts on target and they had 8, with a fair few off target for them.

Apart from proving we were more clinical on the day, it shows the two sides were very evenly matched.

Having reviewed the goals, I saw no foul on Simonsen for the equaliser in my honest opinion.

I am inclined to agree. For me it was 50/50. I've seen them given, particularly as keepers tend to be over protected. I thought SS went into the challenge weakly and without conviction. The two Wednesday players can suggested they were going for the ball and I don't really see any other reason than to disagree. There were no arms raised or owt. I am positive that if SS came in with real conviction, confidence and power then he would have cleared the ball. Madine and their left back are big lads, but Simmo is 6ft 2/3 and can use his arms. Why couldn't he have got a fist on it? Another question to be raised is why Madine and their big, dirty left back were allowed to challenge Simmonsen unnopposed. Maguire was nowhere and Collins was running towards the line to scramble clear. All in all I have not changed my opinion from what it was on Sun-di: goal keeping error. Powder puff effort from a poor keeper. He cost us points ..... again.

Can't help but agree with you here, I've never known the lane to be that loud before, was a real experience and the fact I had lost my voice before half time says it all I think, it was superb!

There was no way their lad (not madine) went for the ball - unless you count Simmos extremely small pair.

His eyes never came off simonson and never looked at the ball. They did a job on us and the ref let them

i'm usually monty's biggest critic but i thought the combination with macdonald showed a lot of promise.. i agree with olle about the crowd, that's the biggest racket i've heard since last time the s6massive visited.. one thing.. i was talking to the window cleaner (he's one of them).. he thought we played nice football at times but came out with the classic 'and who's that bloke that can't make simple passes.. he was captain an'all!!'

Sorry stanny but it wasnt a foul. 20 years ago nobody would have batted an eyelid at that incident.

Goalkeepers are over protected in the modern game imo. Typical of our luck, the ref didnt react to the contact for once.

Have to call it as I see it and to me everyone involved goes for the ball.

What I have an issue with was the unpunished, persistent and cynical fouling from their players.

Two of their players should have received red cards in the first half.

Spot on Ollie, and that's been the problem for a while. He seems to have lost all confidence in claiming the ball under pressure and lost his bottle.

Once he's decided he's coming for it then like Ollie says he needs to challenge with real conviction. Both goals look like 'scared' half hearted attempts at challenges - the equivalent of outfield players backing out of challanges or making a token gesture because they're scared of getting a knock.

Just watched the game on Blades Player and did a chances count, which I think is more accurate than possession and shots on/off goal, in terms of analysing who were the better team.

The Blades - 2 100% chances, 1 50% chance
The pigs - 6 100% chances, 3 50% chances

It is very rare to see a home team produce so few chances, but thankfully we were very effective on Sunday. And quite lucky.

I agree with you about over protection but 9 out of 10 would be given as a foul. Johnson never went for the ball just the man
