Th guy in the middle with the cap makes me laugh. He looks so out of place. Do you think he just got caught up in the rabble trying to buy some tat from the club shop or something?

Hunch and only that but Ched Evans to star in a BIG Utd win.

derby history

Interesting date october 16th

the first ever derby game was on oct 16th 1893 a 1-1 draw at BDTBL
only met another 2 occasions on oct 16th both at hillsboro both 1-0 blades wins 1897 and 1937/8 season

So omens look reasonable

i feel like luke and han in the garbage recycler at the moment.. one corner under the bar and were gonners

Siimo is a big worry for this game. They are a big side and I can see him flapping in the six yard box more than a showgirl doing the Charleston !!

Another George in goal? Do we only produce goalies called George and full backs called Kyle?

I'm quite scared for this derby match. I think they might turn us over. They are free scoring at the minute and we couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo. Squeaky bum time....

Steel City derby: When it all kicked off in Sheffield's Boxing Day massacre

By John Edwards

Last updated at 10:44 PM on 13th October 2011

The pleas for cool heads have been flying thick and fast, and players from Sheffield's rival camps have even been pictured, arms round shoulders, in an apparent show of camaraderie ahead of Sunday's derby at Bramall Lane.

Former Wednesday idol Terry Curran chuckles at the realisation that, for all the modern game's advances since his day, some things never change.

'They tried to take the sting out of it when we played United at Hillsborough over 30 years ago,' he said.

'Someone came up with the idea we should walk out side by side before the game. Unfortunately, as we lined up in the tunnel, big John McPhail said he was going to break my leg, one of our lads had a right go back and it very nearly turned into a mass punch-up.

Derbies are seldom genteel affairs, and Curran's colourful recollections of December 26, 1979, reinforce the view that the Steel City version is among the most ferocious.

It was the last time Wednesday and United met in what was then Division Three, and it became known as The Boxing Day Massacre, due to the date and scoreline, a 4-0 home win in front of a third-tier record gate of 49,309.

Listen to Curran's blow-by-blow account, and you could easily believe there were other elements that contributed to the name tag.

'You couldn't lose that game, it just wasn't an option,' he said. 'There were several Wednesdayites in our team, me included, and that was the theme throughout the build-up. After training each day, we used to pile into a cafe a few doors away, order a big fry-up and talk about what we were going to do to this United player and that.
'Their players threatened to break my legs and their fans pelted me with coins when I scored'

'On the day of the game, I remember driving in at about 10 in the morning, for a midday kick-off, and seeing thousands of fans milling round. There were over 500 police trying to keep order. It was mayhem. 'In the dressing room, an hour before kick-off, we started psyching ourselves up. It all boiled down to one thing. We couldn't lose. We had to fight for every ball.

'Then Jack Charlton had his say, and it was more of the same. "Right Mick Pickering. Their lad up front. First chance you get, you rattle him. Then it's down to you, Mark Smith. Next one there is, you get in there and rattle him as well."

'That's how it was. You set out to antagonise players into retaliating and getting sent off. Jack had no qualms about it. He'd tell this player and that to "do" an opponent, then say: "Don't worry if you get booked or sent off. I'll have to say I'm fining you, because the press will expect it, but I won't really. I'll make sure it's quashed."

'With the noise from nearly 50,000 people ringing in your ears, you're at fever pitch, and I'll never forget what happened next. The dressing rooms are either side of the tunnel, and both teams emerged at exactly the same moment.

'As we turned towards the tunnel and faced each other, you could feel the animosity from the looks. If we could have done, we'd have played the game there and then, where we stood, and it would have been the scrap to end all scraps.

'Seconds later, we're lining up in the tunnel, and McPhail points at me and says: "I'm going to do you. First minute". I just give him a look, and as I'm doing that, John Lowey, a big nasty centre forward, leans over and says: "Oh, aye - you'll have to get past me first, pal".

December 26, 1979
Sheff Wed 4–0 Sheff Utd

Scorers: Ian Mellor (25-yard shot), Terry Curran (diving header), Jeff King (neat finish from close range), Mark Smith (penalty after Curran was fouled).

Sheff Wed: Bolder, Blackhall, Williamson, Smith, Pickering (c), Hornsby, King, Johnson, McCulloch, Mellor, Curran.

Sheff Utd: Richardson, Speight (c) (Cutbush), Tibbott, Kenworthy, MacPhail, Matthews, De Goey, Bourne, Butlin, Garner, Sabella.

Attendance: 49,309 (record for third tier of English football).

'That leads to all sorts of pushing and shoving, and they're squaring up and about to come to blows when the ref and linesmen step in and order us all on to the pitch.

'That's how it was, though. I remember McPhail and Tony Kenworthy both saying they would break my leg if I went anywhere near them, and they weren't kidding. But the game couldn't have gone any better for us. Ian Mellor put us in front with an absolute screamer into the top corner, and though they hit the bar, we tore them apart in the second half.

'I scored with a diving header, set up Jeff King for the third and was then brought down for a penalty that Mark Smith converted.

'I scored at the Leppings Lane End and couldn't resist sliding on my knees towards the United fans. Maybe I shouldn't have, but when you've just realised a dream you've had all your life, it's easier said than done.

'I was pelted with coins. Hundreds of them. I was on 300 quid a week, and I swear I'd have earned more if I'd picked them all up. 'At the final whistle, I went to McPhail and said: "I thought you were going to break my leg. You didn't even come close."

'Nothing could take the edge off the moment. There weren't showers in those days, just a big communal bath. We all sat there, belting out the Boxing Day song that had been ringing round the ground minutes earlier.

'There was chorus after chorus of "Hark now hear the Wednesday sing", each one louder than the last. There wasn't a peep from the away dressing room. It was magical.'

As a youth coach at Doncaster, Curran will be a reluctant absentee from Bramall Lane but he is confident Gary Megson's side will chalk up another Wednesday win.

'They are hitting their peak at just the right time, whereas United have dipped a bit,' he said. 'Wednesday were conceding far too many goals, but Gary seems to have addressed that.

'I know Danny Wilson, and he is a great lad. As a former Wednesday player and manager, he's going to get all sorts of abuse if United lose. I've a feeling Danny could be in for an uncomfortable afternoon.'

Interest in the Sheffield derby is such that Wednesday have sold almost 10,000 tickets for a Hillsborough screening of Sunday's game, which is being played at Bramall Lane.

Gary Megson's team will have around 4,300 supporters at the match, with United's ground expected to be full to its 32,000 capacity.

It is likely that United will have the biggest League One crowd of the weekend and the Hillsborough screening will mean their rivals from across the city will have the second largest.

Score draw, with the unclean scoring first.

If we can field our strongest side there's a chance we might just edge it.

Great article - though it hurts to say it.

I'd love to hear Hoyland, Bradshaw or Whitehouse talk about the atmosphere in the same tunnel before we beat them 3-1 to do the double under Basset. That team didn't deserve to be on the same pitch if you read the papers or listened to the football experts, but they frightened the shit out of the pigs that night and played them off the park. None of this we heart hoof bollocks - we heart bollocks. And that lot had plenty.

Hope someone's stirring them up for Saturday.

Watched the goals again last night on facebook. We really gave the unclean a football lesson. I hope the piggy bastards are as confident as the pig 91 squad were they really did think they only had to turn up

Look at the teams the pigs have beaten on their run teams towards the bottom of the table, they are poor away from home .They are overconfident just ready for a fall.
As for keepers Bywater is a poor keeper he only offers a long punt probably why they signed him he is no better than Simmo.
If the match was at their ground it would be worrying but it is at the acid filled Lane something that bunch haven't come close to experiencing at Stevenage or Hartlepool.
We have also just signed two with pace something that people on here have been saying has been missing.

That game was 20 seasons ago. At the end of that season, we finished 9th in the top tier and Wednesday 3rd. Now we are scrapping it out in the 3rd tier.

How low Sheffield football has fallen...

How low Sheffield football has fallen...

But how has it happened? How can small towns like Blackburn, Wigan and Bolton keep teams in the Premiership year on year. How can teams like Villa, West Brom, Sunderland and Fulham spend far more time in the Premiership than both Sheffield teams. With the exception of maybe Villa and WBA we have potential crowds far in excess of the others. Our city is not as poverty stricken as places like Sunderland and Bolton. What is wrong with football in this city? I don't want to be the next Man City by why can't we attract investors.

Sheffield is a great city where many students stay or return because they love it. I returned after living abroad and loved it and I would happily live in Sheffield again now if work allowed. I don't know if you've got a PhD Darren, but there's one waiting to be done.
