Ten to tackle in honour of our progression to probable defeat by the Spireites in the Northern Quarter Finals:

1. What was the Johnstone's Paint Trophy called when United first played in it in 1983-4?

2. How many home games have United played in the JPT or its predecessors?

3. What was significant about the result of United's game with Chester in the 1988-9 version of the competition?

4. Who fractured a cheekbone in the game at Scunthorpe in 1983-4, causing Ian Porterfield to play the reserves in the next round?

5. Who was sent off at Wrexham in our second tie with them in 1988-9?

6. On to the rubbish cup for higher division sides now. Which team knocked United out of the Full Members' Cup in 1986-7 and went on to win the trophy whilst we beat them home and away in the league?

7. What did United fans do in the Zenith Cup game against Wednesday that no away fans have done since at Hillsborough?

8. And what competition record was set during that game?

9. Which player, widely disliked by United fans, scored his second two goal haul in two seasons at the Lane in the Zenith Cup tie against Manchester City in 1990-1?

10. What was the score (a) after 5 minutes and (b) at Full time of the Zenith Cup game against Oldham in the same season?

1. What was the Johnstone's Paint Trophy called when United first played in it in 1983-4? - Associate Members' Cup

2. How many home games have United played in the JPT or its predecessors? - 2 2-1 win v Bradford 13/3/84 and 2-2 draw with Chester 13/12/88

3. What was significant about the result of United's game with Chester in the 1988-9 version of the competition? - it ended our run of 11 successive home wins in all competitions.

4. Who fractured a cheekbone in the game at Scunthorpe in 1983-4, causing Ian Porterfield to play the reserves in the next round? - Colim Morris, but the real reason he played the reserves in the next game v Hull on 2/5/84 was it was 3 days before our votal promotion game v Wimbledon. Hull, who were, of course, also in the promotion hunt, did the same.

5. Who was sent off at Wrexham in our second tie with them in 1988-9? - Booker and Benstead after the final whistle.

6. On to the rubbish cup for higher division sides now. Which team knocked United out of the Full Members' Cup in 1986-7 and went on to win the trophy whilst we beat them home and away in the league?. Blackburn

7. What did United fans do in the Zenith Cup game against Wednesday that no away fans have done since at Hillsborough? - stood up?

8. And what competition record was set during that game? - highest non final attendance

9. Which player, widely disliked by United fans, scored his second two goal haul in two seasons at the Lane in the Zenith Cup tie against Manchester City in 1990-1? - Mark Ward, but you mean 2 games I think - he scored 2 in the league at Man City on 19/1/91 and 2 3 days later at the Lane in the ZDC (or maybe you are referring to the 2 goals he got at the Lane for WHU the previous season).

10. What was the score (a) after 5 minutes and (b) at Full time of the Zenith Cup game against Oldham in the same season? - 0-2 and 7-2.

7. What did United fans do in the Zenith Cup game against Wednesday that no away fans have done since at Hillsborough?

Complete guess, officially sat in a stand other than the Leppings Lane end? (as opposed to sitting ninja style with the home fans)

5. First game called off when United fans had already arrived in Wrexham
10. Crucial game - helped turn the season for us before the amazing run started.

Darren got em all right, of course, with this caveat:

I do mean the West Ham game, which is why I referred to the games being at the Lane. I'd forgotten he got the goals in the Maine Road game - my main memory of that is David Elleray's vindictive sending off of Vinnie Jones.

During the game at Hillsborough United fans were allowed to stand on the "cheese slice" corner on Leppings Lane. This is the only time post the disaster that any away fans stood on that end. The terrace behind the goal was, of course, kept clear except for ball boys.

The Police had learnt nothing, though. It was an incredibly tight squeeze, so much so that when Booker equalised I was lifted off the ground in the crush around me....they did move some people into the North Stand at some point.

The first game Jones missed after signing for us - we won all 4 matches he missed that season...

Revolution Snr didn't attend but came down to give me a lift home and came in for the last 10 minutes, and saw the last 3 goals for free!

Great questions Revo and brought back a lot of memries, thanks.
Should have given Darren a time limit so he couldn't answer until someone else had a go.
He too damn good in the memory dept for the rest of us.

That ZDS match at the sty was the start of a good run of form for the Blades and showed we could compete with the swine - who were positioned way above us then.

If our players were as good at football as Darren is at quizzes, we'd be top of the Premier League.

Not really, we were near the top of Division 2 at the time and they were near the bottom of Division 1, hence the Blades fans chanting 'He's fat, he's
round, he's taking Wednesday down Atkinson' all night at them.

Rev - if you look at this fine video - you will I think see Blades standing and celebrating in upper section of the corner in 1992. Footage of 3-1 win at Hillsboro if link doesn't work.
