Whether he gets the chance and whether he takes it have yet to be seen, but I wouldn’t rule him out of making a positive contribution to this season.

I don’t specifically think playing in a back four is a problem for our defenders. But playing it out from the back definitely is, or pissing about at the back...as I like to call it.

That problem may arise because no one in midfield is making themselves available in space. They stand stationary close to their marker leaving the defenders forced to pass it around or hit it long.

Even if they did they don't have the instant control needed to profit from such space. If we're not going to coach such techniques into them, then the PL is always going to be a struggle.

I'm not sure I would class getting picked as "default".
Being overweight, lazy, injured (lets not forget 2 have also being caught drink driving) are reasons a 35 year is still taking their place regardless of huge price tags.

Plus, Slav watches traing, its ok picking them because they are stronger and faster, but they obviously aren't pulling up trees in training either.

Yes, I agree totally. It may be an outdated point of view, but for me the role of a central defender is to prevent the opposition from scoring, by winning the ball and give it to the supposed talented midfielder or putting it into row Z.

I'd go with this:



Get back to basics of 3-5-2, but attacking.

Reasons:

• Shore things up at the back, we've been weaker and prone to the counter.
• Get Fleck back to a familiar role, to get the best out of him. Not this weird CDM role that he doesn't look comfortable in.
• Bring Guediora in to do the CDM role.
• N'Diaye in the Duffy role, excited to see what he could do.
• McBurnie needs a chance to try and stake a claim at being useful. See if he can play into form. I'm not saying he should just be granted a start, but against second bottom is a good chance - and his own Instagram posts suggest he may be included.
• Give Moose a chance to prove himself.
• Crucially, give Bill a rest/bring him on.

Basically replicate our old system with new bodies. Guediora as Coutts and N'Diaye as Duffy.

You're right, but I fear his positive contribution might be getting moved on come January, purely due to lack of opportunity.
