Not including the youth players, and presuming Kozzy and France's contracts are up, is this where we stand as of today ?

GK: Simmo, Aksalu
Def: Morgs, Taylor, Collins, Lowton, Lescinel
Mid: Ertl, Willo, Monty, Doyle, McAllister, Philliskirk, Squinny, Yeates
Str: Evans, Boggy, Cresswell

I thought Yeates had.

Has Ryan "Like Lion In Zion" France really gone?! What would he have been on for the past few years? (apart from his arse)

I thought his contract had been terminated (for disciplinery reasons shall we say) but there were rumours a couple of weeks ago that this wasn't the case and maybe it was another Adams fall-out that had been ironed out.

Who is number 36 in this picture? I'm embarassed to say that I don't recognise him.
According to the squad list it should be Harriot but it doesn't look like him.
Besides, Maguire's number is 30 instead of 40 so it looks like the squad list is out of date anyway.

Thought the same thing when I saw it this morning. It looks most like Ertl althought he must have lost a bit of height over the Summer !

Everything about that squad looks league one,or worse. Can actually see a few of the better players on the list leaving before August and replaced by even more inferior players.Doesnt look good.

Despite half of them having played in the Prem at some point !

It'll be interesting to see the starting line-up on Saturday. Who was not in it will probably tell us more than who is.

I'd suggest that youth players WILL be included.

For instance, Slew and Harry Maguire will certainly be first team seeing as they were for a number of games toward the end of the season; and I'd say the same of Kennedy, Long and Harriott. And a number from the dev team will be considered first team too such as Tonne.

So, in short, no I don't think that's where we stand today.

Choose from:

The sofa.
The physio's table.
Ten grand a week.
The phone to his bookie/agent/bird.
A very good thing.
University Challenge*.

*maybe not.

It was really to assess what is considered to be our 1st team squad. I know one or two of the youth players will feature (if still around), as may Conneely, Tonne and one or two others. I included Philliskirk and McAllister because they featured last season. Despite the hype over the youth team, and I appreciate a lot can change in a few weeks, I'd be surprised if anyone over and above Slew and Maguire are in the short term plans for making the XVIII for Oldham. Having said that, if Monty and Squinny go for example, that may promote Harriott but I'd expect DW to be looking at bringing in 1st teamers, not squad players which in effect will keep a few down the pecking order.

Are all of the youth team actually tied down on professional contracts ?

Don't you just get compensation??

Not sure what the situation is dp but I'm sure the club have said that Slew is considering a new contract which presumably means he has some kind of contract now. I seem to remember the likes of James and Chappel signing '1st year pro contracts' last season.

I presume the youth players are tied to clubs but not under a formal professional contract which entitles the club to demand a fee. This is when the compo kicks in if a player moves although it might also be an age thing. However, if we have turned down an offer from Fulham for Slew then he must be under contract somehow.

Its a young aussie we signed in Jan, I only remember because there was an article in one of the programmes, was at the same time we signed a couple of other foreign youngsters.

Yeates is definitely still at the club and will be taking part in pre-season.

Has anyone been down to them train wondered how morgs was doing??

Not seen them yet, but Morgs and Taylor are doing okay, Taylor's just upped his running and both hope to be back this side of Christmas at present.

Like you say, the youngsters WILL be involved and so have to be put in the first team squad. While I don't expect youngsters such as Whitehouse to be ready, I'd be surprised if Kennedy doesn't make the step up, and the same goes for many in the dev squad.

And that wouldn't be a bad thing either. I don't give a monkeys if we don't get promoted next season. Top priority for me is trimming the wage bill, and bringing youngsters through.

What all this does show though is that the squad isn't quite as threadbare as some are saying. Inexperienced and lacking in certain areas, yes, but if we had to put out a team tomorrow, it would be far from a mid table looking team.

Jim didn't Tonne feature roughly the same amount as Phillisirk? So doesn't that warrant him a place on your list?

and George Long ! To be honest, I think certain appearances were purely to make up numbers towards the end of the season and whilst I can see Philliskirk, McAllister featuring, I don't think Long will be anywhere near the squad for example.

As I say, it was just to guage how the squad was looking without relying on youth. I'm sure we could well have a squad of 25-30 players at this point if we include everyone who's been on the bench.

Based on how poorly we performed against sides around us last season and how far off the pace we finished, I would disagree. I've said for a while the side lacks balance and quality in key areas. At the moment we simply arent equipped for a top six challenge.
