The losing run continued for the miserable Blades as they slumped to yet another defeat and the awful start back to life in the Championship continued. This time it was the latest of late defeats at home to Huddersfield Town as somehow the Blades contrived to turn at least a point (with a late Sharp goal) into nothing, with calamitous defending in the final minute of stoppage time leading to another loss. United had been better for large periods but lacked penetration, creativity and rarely created much despite having the ball for most of the game against a largely negative and poor Huddersfield side who will scarcely believe how they managed to exit with a point let alone all three from the game they were barely in till the final stages.

Manager Jokanovic changed almost half his side from the shellacking at the Hawthorns with the expected keeper change with Foderingham in for Verrips. Ben Davies and Rhys Norrington Davies made their Blades debuts on the left side of the defence in a more familiar line up of 5-3-2 and Brewster and McBurnie started up front. Huddersfield were fresh off their first win after seeing off Preston in the week.

The game started in sloppy fashion with neither side really causing the other many problems although Basham mis controlled and Baldock had to sweep up. Davies and Norrington Davies started in confident matter and slowly United started to get control of the game. The game from around the 10-minute mark was played exclusively in the Huddersfield half and Berge’s influence was starting to grow. His runs across field led to a Basham cross and McBurnie header well off target and then another run saw Baldock get in but his final ball was poor. Brewster won a corner after he chased down a ball down the left but Town cleared Fleck’s delivery – who was on corner duty instead of Norwood.

Huddersfield had offered little but one corner saw Foderingham come and miss but he got the benefit of the doubt with a foul given before at the other end Nicholls timewasting was a feature of the first half as we the leniency of the referee. The keeper went down ‘hurt’ from one challenge as the game became stop start. United were seeing all of the ball and Turton and Colwell were both booked. The former for chopping down McBurnie but Norwood’s free kick was routine for the keeper.

United had dominated without really testing the defence or keeper until Egan headed on and McBurnie’s overhead kick was turned away from Nicholls. The first half drifted away after this and even though the Blades had controlled things, it had been a game of few chances at all. United needed to up the tempo and try and get the strikers some service through the middle but had an over reliance on going wide when the balls were not coming in or when they were with poor accuracy.

The second half saw the Blades carry onto the game and force Huddersfield back and they had a spell down the right where Berge and Baldock linked and they had a number of balls and corners coming across. The home side had two or three efforts blocked and the ball would not quite sit. The tempo seemed to be better and the momentum building but several times with the chance to deliver Berge and Baldock in particular, although heavily involved, could not produce.

After this spell, a few more stoppages seemed to take the sting out of things and Jokanovic decided to change things bringing on Sharp for Brewster which was not met with total approval more for the choice of outgoing player than the incomer.

The game now became a bit more even and Huddersfield with changes of their own, Toffolo and Campbell for High and Ward, coming on, started to make chances after doing little for the first hour.

A mistake by Berge saw Koroma in but he pulled his shot wide. For all the play United had, this was the best chance of the game. Norwood then gave it away as United started becoming ragged and this time Norrington Davies had to get a foot in to deny the sub-Campbell. Finally, it seemed we had a contest in terms of Huddersfield having a go as they realised United were a side they could get at and did not have to defend all game.

On 75 minutes, Huddersfield were rewarded for showing more attacking intent and gradually coming out. KOROMA was suddenly away and somehow seemed to be in on goal from an innocuous through ball with the United defence completely missing. Koroma’s first effort was saved by the left foot of Foderingham but it rebounded straight back to him and he coolly converted giving Town the lead.

This was the cue for further changes, although Osborn and McGoldrick had been readied long before this. They came on for Norrington Davies and Fleck.

A ball over the top nearly saw Sharp get in ahead of Sarr but he could not control it before soon after a McBurnie header down saw Sharp fire a volley goalwards but whilst powerful, it lacked direction and Nicholls saved.

The game entered 5 minutes of stoppage time which seemed kind on Town who had been skilful in the art of patient set plays to say the least.

However, it seemed the Blades had rescued something from the game in the 92nd minute and it was from a predictable source. SHARP managed to get on the end of it and roll his man and with his left foot sent his shot into the far corner and finally United had scored a goal! The roar from the Kop that greeted the goal also signalled that they thought the Blades still had time to win the game with a few minutes to play but Huddersfield went straight up the other end and won a corner.

The ball was not cleared and as the defence came out, Toffolo shrugged off Davies and then calmly played across for CONWILL to tap home and win it right at the death! It was an incredible finish and the cue for many in the Lane to head for the exits. Full time saw a mixture of boos and applause recognising the frustration of another defeat but also of some improvements in elements of the performance. However, United sit 2nd bottom after 4 games and with the other relegated sides both top two, it seems the Blades are going in completely the wrong direction and need to stabilise fast. The losing culture is heavily soaked amongst this group and worryingly the new manager has not been able to arrest this albeit in limited time.

United – It was better I will say that and we dominated the ball most of the game, had loads of territory and for the first half the game was played almost exclusively in Huddersfield’s half. We had some patient (too patient) build up and moved it around but again it was all very safe and we always went down the sides. We did not create much at all with a knock down and McBurnie overhead kick the sum of our decent efforts first half – Norwood had a free kick first half also. I thought we dominated the game for the first hour but again saw very little in terms of meaningful chances or penetration. Berge did well in moments and Norrington Davies and Baldock were well advanced but it was all too ponderous for all the play we had. I felt Huddersfield made no attempt to attack at all but funnelled us wide, packing the midfield and then moved across to combat it knowing we would recycle and it came back and across. We were way too slow to move it on. Granted we controlled the and the tempo but not sure the tempo was where it needed to be in terms of being too laboured. Seen a lot say how well we played and I would concede for the first 60 minutes it was all us but it was all us with no real idea of how to break them down or score. Huddersfield were and are a really poor side. They do not have any real quality I would say with a few promising young lads but a team that will be right near the bottom I feel even after a good week. They basically time wasted, broke up the game and did all the horrible things but like with Birmingham we did not do enough. Two routine saves are not enough for a game played exclusively in the opponent’s half.

I did think the amount of possession and moving them about, albeit slowly would lead to them maybe tiring and some possible chances after the break and for 45-60 minutes we had a spell where where we really penned them back. We had lots of ball down the right and got into some fantastic areas but again nothing of note chances or decent balls in. It was a few fired across and some shots blocked from a long way out. We had them camped in and the crowd started to roar and get behind us even more but then I felt we did not up it even more and let them off the hook. We made a change (wrong one I felt even though Sharp scored) and then it started to sloppy around the hour mark. We had not looked like scoring and the crowd maybe got a bit frustrated (rightly so) and then Berge and Norwood made mistake and they had chances – one just wide and another where Norrington Davies made an interception. At this point you sensed for all the gamesmanship (keeper was awful and should have been booked after 15 minutes) they felt they could score and it became a bit more open. Berge’s threat diminished and the game looked for the first time it could be a 0-1 rather than the 0-0 or 1-0 it may have looked for the first hour.

The goal is awful with us having players out of position, no protection from Norwood or Egan and Baldock and Basham nowhere. The team does not react to the save and we concede a goal where a team has just run through us. We cannot ever play a pass and a simple through ball to create a chance and have not done (save McGoldrick one in week) all season. After this we made changes and went more direct and eventually McBurnie heads a few down that leads to a Sharp chance and finally a goal. At least we have got a point. A better performance – still concerns – but a better showing non the less. Oh no, this is United we are talking! I though maybe we might go and win it but no we concede a corner instantly and then fail to clear our lines and somehow after a weak challenge they have men queuing up to tap in the cross! That’s that. Another defeat.

For all the better play and some positives, we cannot make chances, cannot score goals still (one goal from 71% possession and the keeper made maybe 2 other saves is not enough) and we give away stupid goals. The two today saw us cut apart and were down to poor organisation from the defensive line/team. Awful goals. Does not matter what happens the other end we chuck away goals like that and we are going to struggle.

The 2 or 3 times we did not defend or made mistakes they nearly scored and did with two in the end. There will be a lot better sides than Huddersfield that we play and if we carry on defending like today than there is going to be loads more defeats coming as there has been for the last 18 months.

I have heard his after-match interview and it is fair and reasonable. Promising that Davies (despite his mistake) and Norrington Davies did ok and I also thought Berge showed more life but same concerns continue over lack of pace of the attacks and our inability to create anything down the middle or for the forward (maybe they need to do more too). I also think we went back to the Wilderball in that we had 5-3-2 and wing backs and whilst that allowed us to show some improvements and we looked more organised and had more of a kind of plan (despite stupid goals) we still had the same issues in terms of no idea how to create anything.

It is a major concern and we clearly need more signings. I believe we need to move away from Fleck and Norwood to allow us to play through the middle more and we probably need a different striking option (for all lauding all those strikers no one is really staking a claim and we may need to move a few out to move some in). There are still major holes.

The biggest concern (yes, I know tactics, personnel and style are the chief worries) is the mentality of this group. They are a set of ‘losers.’ Sounds harsh but they are. They are soft and do not know how to win or even draw games. We are timid and have no leadership. I thought likes of Egan, Fleck and Norwood were bigger character than us but they are all meek and mild. There seems something wrong in the camp and what I mean by that is they are just limping along, losing every week. So far, we have seen no sign of a huge chance in effort/drive from most and that worries me with a new manages. So, in a roundabout way what I am trying to say is the issue and biggest concern is the players. We need to quickly overhaul half a dozen (sad as it is to see the back of McGoldrick, Basham, Fleck, Norwood and possibly even Baldock/Egan) it has to be done. We need a different feeling. The worry is the more stay, the rot is set in and as we have seen with Brewster etc, they are part of this losing group. This was my argument for bigger changes in the summer. We will not bring in the 5 or 6 starters he demands in 8 days I feel. I hope I am wrong. It worries me if we don’t where we go? It seems already at best we are looking at a season of transition (mid table I mean I suppose) rather than a promotion assault that may seem a jerk reaction but the lack of chances/points/goals means that without a few transfer windows he cannot change this all round so dramatically. I know Fulham turned it round but they had the same players that turned it round for the most part – not sure we can do that with this group at all.

I still maintain it could get worse before it gets better and would not be shocked to see us lose at Luton (we have won two away games in 18 months) despite their result today and go into the international break rock bottom. I just hope the fans do not start saying ‘sack the manager’ and demanding a change here. He needs to do better but it was clear from last season that this team is broken and now he probably knows it – made 5 changes today and believe he would make if he could (argument he could have played Osborn).

Ratings:

Foderingham 5.5/10 – Had very little to do but not totally convincing to say he barely had anything to do. Just basic stuff first half really but he too got lucky with a foul from a high ball where he came out flailing. Not sure he had a save to make though the entire first half. Then he saw one go just wide after we made a mess of a pass. Had one odd moment where he failed to take a ball and followed it to the wing and then made a tackle and possibly fouled their man – it was not great keeping. So, two things fairly routine he nearly made a mess of. He did punch one out after this that was ok and better than how Verrips did with such things in the week. The goal I have seen some criticise but he got his foot to it and those ones are hard to go down with your hand (close to your body) and then nobody reacted to the rebound as the player controlled and picked his spot. No chance on the second goal as the defence went AWOL.

Baldock 5.5/10 – This mark may seem harsh as he did try hard and put a lot in but once again in the key moments, he makes the wrong choices both ends. He had so much of the ball but again I cannot recall one good cross or moment where he created anything all game. It was all touch, touch, touch and then back. He has no confidence to drive into the box or drive it in. His crosses that did come in were overhit or to no one. He often just went to Berge and hoped he would do it. Some decent football and interplay down the right but no end product at all. On the first goal they conceded he was nowhere as they got in between him and Basham. Likewise on the winner, why he and the other defenders all stood on the box and several of their players ran into the box (watch it back)? I love the guy but we need to give Bogle a go – he may create something, put a decent ball in, go beyond his man and has shown he can score a goal. Baldock is making mistakes defensively so not sure what harm it will do trying Bogle?

Norrington Davies 6.5/10 – Steady first league start and some promise. Got down the wing and tried to get involved and to make things happen. He was lively and looked to get on the ball. Most of his play was attacking wise as he did not really have to defend much – one tackle that good after the Norwwod error – but he spent most of his time going forward. At times his crosses did not find anyone but like he did try and put it in the box at least. His control and passing was fine. Definitely need to persist with him here – probably got tired at the end and why he came off – if not I would have left him and Brewster on personally who were better than Baldock/McBurnie who stayed on in respective positions. I have heard some rumours that RND might be one he lets go but would seem odd him playing if that is the case?

Davies 6/10 – Decent debut overall but loses a mark for the weak attempt to clear/challenge on the winner. On the ball he was solid enough and tidy as he moved it on and he was one of few who tried to move it quicker. Comfortable on the ball and tidy enough. Quite mobile too. Sadly, the goal he has to be stronger – some said he was pushed but I have watched it back and he goes down way too easily against a small player and this directly led to the goal. One or two appealed but most of our lads’ lack of appeal was telling in terms of the look of resignation.

Egan 5.5/10 – Ok but put under no pressure at all really. They had 2 up top but both of them actually ended up as extra midfielders at times too. It was an easy game for an hour and the main part needed to be him moving it on but was way too slow to do this when he had it and ended up going to Norwood all the time which slows us down – try something different – switch it wide or come out with it? The two goals did not come through him directly but do wonder where the defence was on both goals – it was laughable marking with huge holes. Why are we so high out from a corner we had not even cleared properly?

Basham 4/10 – Thought he was really poor today. Started with a miskick that put them in and carried on from this all game with several intercepted balls and poor choices. Going forward he was looking for fouls that were not there and did not really offer much or was too slow to do things. He made another few mistakes second half that led to chances as they broke and then on the first goal have no idea where him and Baldock were? He did get into decent areas at times second half and came out like the old days but not sure we had those drives into the box and was a bit hesitant to do it. He carried on with poor touches defensively and just seemed a bit errand. On the second even after Davies loses it, he gets beat so easily and then puts his arm up for offside?

Norwood 5.5/10 – A frustrating game again where he was always on the ball but invariably, I felt quite slow and predictable. He did ‘ping’ a few around but again I wanted more forward passes and it being done quicker. He was ok with it and did not give it away and I suppose he is not going to run forward with it but want him to occasionally try and break the thirds rather than always go wide. Taken off set plays – Fleck’s were no better – apart from the free kick which was a tame effort straight at the keeper. Second half he started to become a bit ragged like the rest and gave one away that nearly led to the goal. As the game went on, we seemed to start to lose this area and they created a few chances. I would like us to move away from him and Fleck now and get some midfielders in that can run and have some dynamism. They never get in the box or even look like scoring a goal so with strikers who do not score it is a problem.

Fleck 3.5/10 – Another largely anonymous showing. One good run where he took two men on was good in the first half and it was like the Fleck of old but after this several poor moments where he got out run or outfought. There was one near the touchline and he was so slow to react to it. He just sort of gave up and the player ran away. This happened again soon after. Looked woefully unfit and other than the one moment I mentioned he moved it on when he had it and often his passes were just into an area and rarely forward. Thought once again he was our least effective midfielder. He took free kicks A game where the defence needed little protection and he should have been able to drive forward and make things happen and was static, slow and looked disinterested. Looks done to me as sad as that is to type. As he trooped off his body language suggested he just knows he is struggling. You saw it when a few players skipped away from him.

Berge 7/10 – Our best player by a fair way I felt. Norrington Davies and Davies did ok as the other outfield stand outs and Sharp got the goal but he was the one who actually looked good on the ball and ‘might’ make something happen. He was the one player who looked like he might make things happen as he dropped the shoulder, drove along the field (sadly rarely forward) and tried to link. He showed he wanted to get on it and tried to create things and was always looking for it back. I do think once he gets to the last third, we do not see that bit of magic, a killer ball, a shot or a dribble into the area. He somehow just runs out of steam and then plays it off almost negating some of the good work. Second half he linked well with Baldock and Basham and a few others and once or twice even got into advanced areas but again no end product sadly. I also felt he tired around the hour mark and then he almost put them in with a loose ball. The final part of the game not sure we saw much of him. Still the stand out player on the pitch and technically stood out but again need a final bit from him.

McBurnie 4/10 – I have debated on the pod that I felt he was poorer than Brewster before Brewster went off but my colleague on the pod said he was better. I thought it never really stuck to him at all. There was a spell in the opening of the game where he gave it away three times in about 10 seconds. He just kept giving it them back. He tried to put himself about but often he sort of stumbled around although did win one free kick from such a piece of play. Had the overhead kick effort which was decent. Second half again the service was not great coming in and it never stuck to him. Looks for fouls or wrestles with defenders at the wrong point. Thought he was lucky to stay on as he has been ineffective but he did win two headers that led to a chance and the goal. Still need to see a lot more from him but do think the way we play is not helping out strikers – it is too slow and we do not get the ball in the right areas at all and never play through the middle.

Brewster 4.5/10 – I thought he was ok at times first half and had a few decent runs down the side and won a corner or tried to link but it was all scraps and he had little service. He seems to want to play on the shoulder but we do not play balls to the strikers – we go down the sides and try the patient build up stuff. He kept chasing and trying to get in and even 2nd half had a few bits of play but again the play we had was all down the side and never coming in. I think we might have put one decent cross in all game. Most were overhit or hit the first man and it was never giving them a chance to attack. Maybe they do need to gamble more and should be in better areas but are probably never used to it coming in so keep doubling back on themselves? Not sure either of our strikers did anywhere near enough really at all despite the lack of service and need to show a lot more. It is incredible we have paid 40 million for these two. FORTY MILLION!

Sharp 6/10 – Came on and was offside instantly but then nearly got in with a chance but could not get it under control. Had a volleyed effort that goes either side and it is in. Then he got in and scored a trademark Sharp goal. You never thought he would miss when he rolled his man. In the end counted for nothing. Still would persist with McBurnie and Brewster as we need to see if either can get going but Sharp is only one you think might score but does little else normally when he plays.

Osborn – Thought he was one of better players other night for effort but does lack quality so can see why he changed it at the start. Norrington Davies did ok but maybe tired and why Osborn came on? He did ok when he came on and did put a few crosses in as we just tried to find something to get back in it. Thought for the winner that him and Davies let the ball down that side for a corner too easily.

McGoldrick – No idea where he was playing? Seemed to be left wing or midfield. I had no idea. He floated around the left side but did very little of anything when he came on.

Jokanovic 5/10 – He will probably point to the possession stats and see it as an improvement but overall, I am not sure we did anywhere near enough for all the play we had. It was better than it had been but against an awful side who let us have it. We still created sod all again and then as the game went on became desperate, gave it away and started to concede chances ourselves. The last half an hour they looked like scoring as much as we did and we became ragged after a decent first half/60 minutes of play even if we had no penetration. He looked very frustrated on the side-lines with the pace of the approach and the coach was imploring the side to get up the field but they do not have the pace/players to play that way so continued to be slow and predictable. I genuinely think he is shocked how slow/unathletic/cautious the bulk of this squad is. The midfield has no real guise or penetration at all and the strikers are static and lack ability to make things out of nothing. I think he realises we need a major revamp even to be competitive (mid table) at this level and if things carry on, we will end up getting sucked into a struggle like other teams that have come down – Huddersfield, Stoke, Sunderland all with ageing squads who needed change but could not do it as were stuck with older players on long contracts. I think we have to give him time but am concerned fans will react if we keep losing and he will not get it. Be interesting if we do not bring the 5 players in, he wants as if we do not, I could actually see him walking if we were still struggling in 4 or 5 weeks. That may seem a big call but how I feel if we do not bring the players in – we basically have to sign a player every 2 days up to next Wednesday! That is a big ask after 1 signing on loan in 12 months! Be interesting to see what he says if we fail to make such big changes which I think privately most think is more likely (think we may get a couple in but half a side seems a lot – needed I agree!)

Huddersfield – Struggled last season and did not really add anyone to an already paper-thin squad. The manager seemed to have struggled to make his mark and they have a squad full of young player mixed in with many that seem on the way down or are not quite up the top end of this league. They have some experience in the likes of Campbell, Hogg, Sarr etc and the youngster O’Brien is highly rated but a scan of their squad and you worry where they may end up this season and I tipped them to go down I must admit.

I saw nothing today to see anything different. They won in the week and won again today and apparently, they were very ordinary in the week and were second best today but won. They were quite negative and defensive and time wasted form the off and after 5 minutes of being ok defended for nearly the whole of the first half. After the break, they improved and we regressed and actually had two decent chances after the hour mark. After this the game was more even and they had more of the ball than they had before (they had not tried to even attack before that). They got their goal and seemed like they would it out. The late leveller on the reflection of the game they could not argue at all but then they go straight down, win a corner and have men in the box and score a well-made second goal showing the determination we lacked in the key moments. It was incredible and a real smash and grab.

Overall though they were a really poor side who sat back, time wasted and did not even try and attack really but will say we never hurt them and it kind of worked they will say in that the keeper made maybe 2 saves up to 0-1 and both of their were easy-ish (McBurnie and Norwood first half). For all the ball they gave up, they kept a solid line and restricted us.

A team though that a good side at this level would put away easily 2 or 3-0 at least but once again a side that just coped with us quite easily even though they did not have the ball (see Birmingham) and in the end for the lack of possession had as many clear chances as us really. I have no idea why they decided to park the bus. When they finally had a bit of a go they created and scored. Suppose they proved you can beat us by defending most of the game and then attacking when you need to. Teams are providing lots of blueprints how to beat us (Birmingham and Hudds one way and then WBA another with a combination of timewasting, spoiling and just a few moments of quality when they needed it in the final third -which in 4 games we have not been able to do)

Opponent Man of the Match – The lad who scored the winner Colwill was lively but not sure anyone was superb. It was a workmanlike performance. The keeper might have been their best player not for his performance but his timewasting, gamesmanship and general cheating from minute one which was incredibly effective with a weak referee. I suppose the sub, Toffolo made the winner with a great bit of play showing determination we could not find.

Opponent Weak link – A lot of very ordinary players. Not sure any were great at all. The front lads were starved of service. Hogg just tried to kick Berge when he got it. The big lad at the back Sarr was so clumsy but sort of player that does well at this level. Pearson was another slow player who got turned easily on the goal. Sadly, we could not punish this poor opposition.

Referee/Officials – Michael Salisbury. Terrible. Like many of the others. Weak and no control. Warned the keeper at least half a dozen times before he booked him. He had warned him 3 or 4 times first half and then told their captain to have a word but then let him carry on. I said he would be booked 5 minutes from the end and was pretty much spot on. Do not tell him or warn him, bloody book him! Weak but all the refs are the same. The rest of the game he was behind play a lot and him and his assistants just guessed a lot with offsides and throws (which way). Just did not seem to know what was going on. They missed a number of foul throws and also moving balls from some free kicks (us and them). There were fouls or moments when all the officials kept looking at each other (Berge foul first half/Basham foul first half). They had no idea. The ref was miles behind play too.

Huddersfield kept falling down and pretending they were injured (the keeper did it twice) and he did nothing about it. Gave some soft fouls which was odd he let the winner go (although I did not think it was a foul, he had given some like this – the one on Berge). Just seemed to be woefully inconsistent but the game became so stop start and he did not let things flow. Refs generally in all leagues do seem to be letting a lot more physical stuff go to be fair though I would say that. United need to adapt and be more physical as we will meet many teams and refs like this. Look I have moaned and he was rubbish but we have to do better and we seem to be pleading for things all the time instead of toughening up. We are going to see refs like this every week so need to wise up. I have seen fans saying teams are dirty or refs are not giving things. Yes they are correct. So do we toughen up and adapt or keep bleating? As I say we are soft as shit.

Crowd / Match Day experience – Good crowd again but seemed a long way from the Birmingham game in terms of numbers so was a little surprised when it was announced. Thought fans tried to be encouraging but got frustrated by slow build up play and a few individual choices. I am not sure there was many boos or groans and then heard a few 2nd half with some give aways and an awful Norwood free kick. The goal saw these frustrations understandably continue and at full time there was a number of boos I heard but this was as much frustration as being solely directed at team I felt? I might be wrong. I worry that if we keep losing things will start to turn and the atmosphere will be horrible for the players and team. Many will say they have got away with it for a year of dreadful performances but it is still sad to see great servants maybe not able to turn it around and sadly it maybe players that get it before the manager who will get more time. Of course, a run of 3 or 4 more games without a win and the pressure ramps up on the manager no matter how bad the players are performing or what he has inherited. He rightly said at the end of the game that the responsibility stops with him. He knows that if this carries on, he will be questioned for the performances and results and what the plan is? I think most are prepared to wait and see who he brings in and what may happen.

Few moans – they need to tell people that you don’t need to put your card in to gain entry and just scan it like a credit card or like an item in the supermarket and nowhere near the hole you used to put it in – seemed to cause lots of issues. Also, the knobhead fan on the goal who ran on. What a moron. Yes, the keeper was annoying but he basically went on and seemed to push or make contact with the Huddersfield keeper – he was on ages and was basically goading him. Surprised he did not lose his cool and despite being a cheat and a timewaster you cannot have fans entering the field of play. Also why did no one try and get him off? He was on ages. He then just went back to his seat. Someone has said he has now been arrested. Surely, he should be given a season ban at least. You can’t run on the playing area and go and have a go at the opposition keeper. Surprised their manager or no one on their team reacted – I will probably get called a snowflake but thought it looked awful. I know it’s one knobhead but not a good look. Hope the club make it clear he has been banned to stop anyone else doing that again.

Thought I'd watched a different game reading others comments until I read your report.

We played the slow build up flat midfield 3 model at home against a team with 10 defenders. It was asking for trouble and so it proved. How many times did that formation fail under CW when faced with the same problem. Bar Codes at Home being a prime example in the EPL.

We huffed puffed and didn't blow anyone down. 71% possession yet Mcb's overhead kick apart we failed to work their goalkeeper until Sharp came on. The game was frustrating. It was ground hog day again as we slowly played down the flanks more often than not failing with the final ball. First half we got around them second half we were reduced to hoiking it 30 yards from the bye line to a non existent ale house forward.

Disappointed with SJ to-day. If he's going to play 3 at the back why aren't we setting up 3-4-3. Mcb and Brewster's past success was based on them playing in a front 3. Brewster to-day looked unsure all match where to make his runs. Sharp came on and within seconds was showing how it should be done.

Going back to the old formation that failed so miserably last year just encourages bad habits. In the first half against Brum we were passing the ball forward at pace. We haven't done that since, whats happened?

For all the brick bats he gets Moose at least knows how to find space. The problem is his fitness record is appalling. The only other player in the squad is the Captain.

I agree it will get worse before it gets better. The soft goals we conceded to-day confirm a team who lack confidence, desire and fight for the cause.

I'd take 21st place tomorrow if I didn't have to witness a flat midfield 3 again with the squad being completely overhauled. Harry Potter couldn't get anything out of this current squad so to expect SJ to is a big ask. He needs the Board to back him. 10 days to the end of the transfer window there is little visible evidence of that. Others have already alluded to it we are looking rudderless on and off the field. Very important week coming up for PA to maintain his credibility with the supporters.

Good report. High marks for Berge, Fleck and Norwood somehow. Berge flattered to deceive and the other 2 need to be fucked off as far from the 1st team as is humanly possible.

Thought Berge was very good for an hour - maybe a 7.5 to 8 and then a 5 for the last 20 minutes or so.

He has talent I feel but rarely applies it but today he was involved a fair but but there is never any end product. The other two need to be taken out. It's not working. We keep rotating strikers but they never get any service or look like scoring. We have to try something different. I'd even give Bogle a go in midfield to give us someone who can carry the ball.

Huddersfields standout player was their number 16 (Sorba Thomas). Always looked like he might create something in that second half and played a huge part in the first goal and then won the corner for the second.

Much bigger threat than anything we have to offer going forward.

I think Slav got it right playing back with 3-5-2 in light of lack of new bodies, best to revert to what they know best and more to the point we just don't have the wingers yet to play his usual formation and style. But, why not play Freeman in the number 10 position where we previously played Duffy. We are crying out for creation and I think that Freeman could have broken through their defence and created. He's one of the few who can run past a man and also shoot from outside the box. I thought that Freeman may play instead of Fleck also but Fleck retained his place.

Disappointed after positive showing v West Brom that Freeman didn't come on at all but hopefully Slav will use him more as we go on - unless Freeman is one that is loaned out/sold. That wouldn't surprise me to be honest.

Yeah played well you are right. Remiss of me to forget him.

Just watched highlights. Stand by Davies going down too easily and being weak. If that's a foul so is the Norrington Davies one on the pen for them.

Worrying we've brought another centre back in who loses out I such duels. We need physicality at the back really and still lack this. Also he gave the ball away on the first goal with an aimless sliced ball. 6/10 may be too high after watching back as was culpable for both goals to different extent.

Not the debut he would have wanted.

Pretty much how I saw the game except I though McBurnie although only average was way better than Brewster who once again looked absolutely lost. I know everyone likes to scapegoat Ollie but say what you like he was the only player to work the Huddersfield keeper in the first half. In the second half he set up Billy twice one volley straight at the keeper the other he put away. Sharp when he came on made all the runs Brewster should be making never giving the CB a minutes rest if only he were 10 years younger. A better team performance but still way too slow in moving the ball about. Berge gifted them a chance and Norwood followed suit soon after and all the lack of confidence came to the fore and we were panicking in defence and looking really ragged no surprise when they went in front. Can't for the life of me fathom why Fleck gets picked ahead of Freeman, said it last week and I'll say it again him and Norwood or done.

Strange game to judge. Only saw 60 minutes due to ticket not working and been sent round to the ticket office to queue in the rain with a couple of hundred others (including some Huddersfield fans). Looks like all areas of the club are a shambles at the moment. Thought we looked better but couldn't help thinking that was more down to the poor apposition. We actually created hardly anything and although did not deserve to loose could never actually se us winning. Nothing will change until we get the midfield sorted. We never try and pass forward or break the opp0sition lines and everything is slow and predictable. Fleck and Norwood are the main issue and both need to come out of the team. Would rather try Freeman and Brunt in there until or when or if we can get fresh faces in. Berge did ok although little end product and still suspect he will be gone by the end of the window. RND and Davies I thought did improve us but if no more new faces come in I can only see a relegation scrap unfortunately.

Agree with both of these. Even though they had little of the ball, Thomas caused us loads of problems, especially when he popped up in those left-hand channels. And while I think the usual three at the back plus wing backs was the right move, he needs something different further up the pitch.

Mostly agree with this as well. The front two were pretty crap, but McBurnie was the more effective for me.

Thought Davies was poor tbh. I know it was his first game, but he lost the majority of his headers, didn't contribute going forward (hence why we created nothing down the left) and made errors for both goals.

I just can't see how they could do worse than Norwood and Fleck apart from a couple of pings they produced zilch, not one decent set piece or through ball all game.

I actually think Norwood more or less did the job he’s supposed to do today. A few poor set pieces aside, and the pass where he nearly put them through, thought he was decent on and off the ball. He was able to find Berge a lot, and he also got a lot of tackles in/interceptions.

The anonymity of Fleck is deeply concerning, particularly in a game where we bossed possession. Haven’t checked his stats, yet, but he was easily and by far the least involved of our midfield.

It was good, to me, that we reverted to the 3-5-2. We need more players in for Slav to play how he wants. My issue is that the current 3-5-2 wasn’t designed as an attacking 3-5-2. We did it to be more solid when we joined the PL. We need an attacking midfielder behind the top two. Without, we’re overly reliant on the fullbacks creating chances, which hasn’t worked for a long while.

Cheers for the report DB

None of the midfielders get into the box either. In fact Fleck doesn’t seem to get anywhere.

our big problem is midfield
we were doing well in getting it forward in the 2017 to 2020 period
but somehow it's just disappeared, the aggression the overlapping the filling in
the crossing the men in the box
you can explain one dropping away but its all gone
Fleck Norwood Baldock Stevens Robinson et al just seem incapable of moving forward
hypnosis to stop going backwards seems to be a viable option

We need a new spine down the team, goalkeeper, dominant centre half, centre mid and centre forward. Four leaders, all with a bit of devilment and drive. Get them in and the rest of the starting XI will fall in behind them. It's going back a few years but I'm thinking players of the ilk of Kenny, Morgan, Brown and Shipperley. As a club and team we're always poor when we don't have a decent keeper and dominant centre half captain.

I can't believe we're four games into the season and these problems haven't been addressed. This should have been sorted in the summer and playing style, personnel, etc ironed out with half a dozen pre-season games.

Just listened to the pod guys, spot on as usual.
Regarding your debate on the first goal, Bash has moved over too far to the left - but the main culprit is George.
It looks like he is ready to go forward again, but doesn't notice until too late their player bombing past him.
This to me is caused by asking George to do too much attacking, for me a defenders first job is to defend.
Oh and McBurnie although poor was still more effective than Brewster

Am bumping this today as a very similar story/catastrophic result as today. Deadbat , you surely won't t now still say Huddersfield are a really poor side?
Wasn't today's display even worse by the way?

Definitely. Is that 5 or 6 last minute goals conceded in stoppage time at home. All at the Bramall Lane end.
