The conundrum that is Oli Norwood

You quite literally wrote a paragraph on Norwood’s “fanboys” aimed at my post that expressed he wasn’t as bad as some say. You didn’t reply about his performance. 🤣

The memory going a bit?

Okay. Pay attention. I'll do this slowly, with pauses, so you can occasionally have a rest and wipe your chin.

By articulation ... Norwood is underperforming (or more accurately, performing to his optimum, which even now isn't good enough for the division we sit in) However some (maybe you) don't see the sub-par levels of delivery (gash set-pieces, surrendering possession, tippy-tappy back three noodling and the pointless hoofs across the pitch) because you are overly impressed and easily pleased by him getting his foot under the ball and artfully gliding a crossfield pass to George Baldock out on the wing, the opposition once Norwood is on the ball having read his next move from sometime last February. Now great, if that kind of 'skill' impresses the shit out of you I can't square that with your karma. But be aware, we don't score goals or win matches by booting it across the park, playing triangles with Egan and 3PO and coughing up possession when pressed. Don't believe me? Check the past year, or form and the 'new way of playing' we haven't got, evidenced by Norwood especially on Satdi neyt.

Oh, and we lost, at home, to a pretty mediocre team in front of a big, expectant crowd. It's just a small detail, I know.

But keep clapping his pings. Don't let me stop you.

You answer me first:

What difference does 'seeing him in the flesh' and 'seeing him on TV' make?

Is he a better player 'in the flesh'? Does his pings make more goals 'live' at the match?

Or is this another tiresome, self-righteous 'you have no right to comment, because you don't go to matches as much as me' bit of rooering?

One day, you'll realise what a chimp you come across like, Sitters. You're another one of the originals whose HRT needs a review.

'Chimp' ,well done ,just cant help yourself can you , not quite got this reasoned debate thing I dont think. A stream of insults and 'witty' put downs are coming across a bit tiresome ,I presume the 'my take' stuff is the same ,I dont read it as its the same bile dressed up in the same format every week.
Of course you see a different game live than on TV , you dont see the whole picture on TV. I take it by your avoidance you have never actually seen him live then ?

U OK hun?

You do read it Sitters. Admit it. And because Sheffield United are still playing shit and I point it out, is why you're pissed off. Take it out on the team, not me, eh?

Of course you see a different game live than on TV , you dont see the whole picture on TV.

Yes I do. Sky has about fifteen or twenty cameras in the ground, from all angles. Give you a clue - the tackle on Berge was never a penalty. I could see that. But if I were in the JSS by the BLLT/corner flag, I guarantee my angle on that would not be as good as the one watching from home. If you disagree with that, I'd say you possibly reject evolution and are a young earth practitioner and think the moon landings were fake.

And the general match view on Sky is high-angle, central TC Stand. I can possibly see more of the pitch and development play than SJ, in truth. Again, deny that and you possibly need your bumps felt.

I take it by your avoidance you have never actually seen him live then ?

Of course I haven't Sitters. Never been to BDTBL or seen them away either.

Fucking hell, this is desperate stuff. You used to be good on here.

I’d go further than that, I’d say Coutts was a better player technically, his first touch was better, his ability to turn whilst shielding the ball was better. In the period just before he got injured, Coutts looked ready for the PL. I’m not going to knock Norwood too much because he was part of a side that got us promoted at a time when we desperately needed promotion but I’ll argue until I’m dead that Coutts was technically better.

Completely agree.

For a glorious 14 months period through League 1 and into the Championship - up until the end of November 2017 - it felt that every time we took to the pitch, the single best footballer on the park, was in our team. I've no doubt that the rest of the team felt that way too and it gave them huge belief and confidence. The fall-off in 2017/18 spoke volumes.

Again, if this is your opener to a “reasoned debate” you’re desperate for then I’m afraid you’ve lost my attention. Grow up, you aren’t as witty and sophisticated as you think you are.

Okay. Mission accomplished.

Take it you'll leave me alone on here from now on?

(watch this ...)

I am usually still a fan of Norwood and I did assume a drop down to the Championship would see him pick his game up.

I am worried now that he is too slow to react and move in this division. Coupled with his ping barely working.

At the very least take him off set pieces. Its getting bizarre.

He's extremely average, not a liability (unless he has a brain fart) but Jesus Tittyfucking Christ, take him off set pieces.

Seriously telling me Berge can't put a ball in the box? That Brewster can't have a shot on goal from a freekick 20 yards out?

Our corners are as much help to us as opposition goalkicks.

I think Norwood is the current scapegoat. I actually don't think he was terrible, just when he makes a mistake it's obvious.
Fleck is the one who I see no merit it at the moment. Freeman, Brunt, Slater can only contribute more than him.

I'll also say Norwood's style means that the lack of movement impacts him more than anyone. I can just about justify his involvement (if someone else takes set pieces).

”the conundrum that is Oli Norwood”

it’s not a conundrum, it’s simple, he’s a busted flush

Always sad to see once decent players on the decline

Got about 10 days to do summat about it

see also Fleck J.

They can all put a ball in the box ,and did today ,we just dont attack it That last free kick for example ,edge of the 6 yard box ,heading height ,we had 6 players in the box ,most over 6 foot including 3 strikers ,not one attacked the ball. Personally I thought we controlled the midfield right up to the first substitution when we went a bit disjointed but our strikers were woeful.

Massive liability last season

If we'd have signed Vieira I assume he'd have been warming a seat on the bench. Days are hopefully numbered as a starter, thanks for the good times but they're well and truly behind us.

Can somebody who's played a bit please explain to me the difference between the 'ping' and a dead-ball situation?

As far as my limited knowledge goes, it seems like he needs a pass and a touch in order to pull off the 'ping', but if the ball is still, he can't do fuck all with it.

I don't get that. I don't understand how the technique can be so chalk and cheese.
