Basham starts....

He has been first on the teamsheet for the last few seasons, and was one of the first for Adkins and Clough.

He gives us heart and energy, with more skill than he is ever given credit for. He also reads attacks and crosses quite well. None of that can be a bad thing.

Frankly I'd trust him to play on his weaker side over Robinson. Then again, I'd trust my 9 year old over Robinson tbh.
 
So what do you think the issue was???
Fleck on the right?
No pressing forward?
It cant ve possession, cos we had 75% of it!
Wrong 3 up top?
Norwood passing?
The fact, Baldock was lost, as he had nobody overlapping him, so he held back!?, same with Fleck on the right!!!???
Come on, if you know the answer, please share!!!
 
Some of the players looked as tired as they looked last season namely Fleck and even Baldock to an extent. The 'ping' has gone out of their game. When did this negativity set in, the sideways, backwards passing, the painfully slow build up, the inability to break teams down? Half of the problem seems mental, a lack of belief. I don't remember the same players playing like that in the promotion seasons or the first season back in the Prem. Maybe they're just exhausted or need a change of scenery?
 
I said in my report and pre season it needed freshening up...a few such as Baldock, Stevens, Fleck and Norwood probably would benefit from a new start as much as we would moving them out. These players gave not been the same for 18 months. Yet we keep playing them and hoping for changes?

There were times last night when I thought we really needed someone with Basham's attributes.

Firstly when the 2 centre backs had the ball but had no one to pass to, so we dropped into that simple passes to a marked midfielder who can only play it back, so our 75% of possesion was for long periods Egan and Robinson knocking it about between themseleves. Bash has that ability to then drive out with it, draw players to him and create openings.

The second time I noticed it was second half when Baldock started to find space to run into. He's an athlete but he's not a winger and he's crying out for options at that point and didn't have any, so on a number of occasions effectively had to take his man on. He's used to having an option in /Basham at that point and without it we need a different approach.

I'd personally pick Bash in a 3 man defence and look to rejig the midfield and forward line. It'll be mid September before this team is settled in the pattern the manager wants, but on the evidence of last night Basham has a good shout of asking why he can't get a shirt in my opinion

I agree with this and while Bash used to be a midfielder and he would almost certainly be an improvement on Norwood, he is getting older and we don’t really have a quality back up for him if he gets broken.

I think both flanks would benefit from his defensive and attacking skills, but it’s asking a lot of the lad as this stage of his career.

At one point last night Berge was left back, fleck left wing and Norwood was Egan’s toes. Absolutely no options in midfield. When Berge stuck to his right side position in the second half he looked so much more comfortable.

I’m surprised we took Fleck off instead of Norwood but I think Slavs still working the teams strengths out when it comes to changes

In our first Premiership season Baldock used to take on the last defender now he stops and passes back. He hasn’t lost his ability just his confidence.He is not the only one.

He did push on, but I don’t recall him taking on the last defender as he did two seasons ago.
Having pushed on he always stopped and came back.
It is not entirely his fault as he never had anyone other than Berge going past him as support.
 
Basham cannot play in a back two. I'm not sure where he plays if we don't play a back three.

To be honest, I'd have rather had him on the pitch than Norwood. Makes sense to have a deep ball winner and a deep playmakers (instead of two deep playmakers who don't make any play!)
 
Basham and baldock would have created much more I would play basham up front just to get him in the side can’t understand leaving him out been consistently o e of our best players

Agree….Basham has been tried at all 3 positions…centre back, right back and midfield…..and he’s not even average Championship standard.

However playing on the right side of 3 centre backs is taylor made for him….bringing out all his strengths and covering his weaknesses,
Basham has a fantastic engine so is easily able to play 3 positions all in the same match.

He plays as a centre back but has Egan next to him covering his mistakes
Bashsm is a capable right back…so Baldock can get forward and won’t be exposed because Basham can come across to help Baldocks defensive duties,
Basham is also a capable midfielder so can get forward and help Baldock down the right wing
and occasionally Basham makes runs into attack so he’s sometimes our most advanced player.

It’s the versatility of playing multiple positions and impressive stamina that enables Basham to excel into a Bashambauer figure.
If Basham just sticks to one position he’s upper league 1/ lower Championship level.
