Oh well, there goes my plan to reintroduce myself to the Rutty and the Triple point.

It is what it is.

Considering where we and most other teams arethe loss of 90 minute preparation time is not exactly going to destroy our start to the season.

Roll on Aug 7th and let's see where we are after 10 games.

UTB

You’ve got to question why we had the 10 day or so gap from playing basically a pub side of Gibraltans to the donny game. Europa had lost about 20 games in a row, and was a pointless run about.

Poor planning on our part, left absolutely no time for contingencies. Not all our fault, but Why only arrange 3 friendlies - when something like this was always possible.

we go into the season with the first team having essentially 2 45 minute exhibition matches…. Not great at all!

Piss poor from the club. I don’t believe for a second we couldn’t arrange a fixture. Any opposition would’ve sufficed considering the circumstances.

Now they have to fuck about with refunding both payment and loyalty points.
It’s telling that in the statement it says we can’t find a SUITABLE fixture rather than any at all

Other than the first team squad having to isolate due to Covid, how do you know there weren't any behind closed doors games?

I guess I don’t. But given the entire squad has been isolating it’s just obvious this preseason has not been ideal.

no one has had a proper run out, we’ve been isolating, no signings an a week before we kick off in earnest. We are weeks behind where we would be usually and that’s even without a new manager.

It’s gonna be a slow start to the league campaign I fear.

I know none of this is out ‘fault’ but you’ve got to be a moron not to foresee something like this and have some contingencies in place. Why not have 4/5 friendlies lined up then one getting cancelled isn’t as big a deal.

it’s not 20:20 hindsight required. It’s just not being idiotic in your planning.

Prey tell how do you line up 4/5 friendlies for the same time? Bet opposition are queuing up for that one.

Don't think anyone has said its ideal. Telling that no "suitable" opponents can be found for tomorrow.

Okay what happens to those other 4 teams that you had lined up for friendly games when you play against your first choice?

I’m saying why not arrange 4 or 5 in total

3 is less than we play usually - and now it’s 2. One against a league one side filled with trialists and one against a side who regularly get beat by more than 5 goals in fucking Gibraltar!!!

line up 5 over the month and worse case we play 3. We’ve a big squad with a new manager wanting to try things.

no one will have played more than 45 minutes in preseason. Slavs not been able to experiment. Basically will be guessing his 11 against Birmigham based on some training exercises - 10 days of which would have been on a laptop not with an actual ball!!

its piss poor planning for me

I dont think there have been any behind closed doors games based on Freemans interview about only having a small amount of minutes under his belt.

IF we start of poorly then this will rightly be highlighted as one of the causes. I just don't understand how we can't get any fixture on short notice given all the other games being called off, with many of them only an hour or two away.

Im playing walking football in the morning but should have revovered by 3 so im ok to play, usually left back ….. at home

I'm proud to announce that my required 2 day recovery from only 1 hour of walking football is now down to 24 hours. I am a lion - hear me cough and splutter!

Obviously you have a degree in sports science, or fitness and know all about pre season training, attaining a level of fitness and the need for down time between games.
If we had played a warm up game before Slav started you would be complaining it was pointless, without the manager either picking the team or watching from the touchline.
A warm up game with the Portuguese team was cancelled at short notice when they couldn't travel to the training facility in Spain.
Not sure if you have noticed but there is a pandemic, it won't be over for the start of the season and its likely to have an effect on fixtures being cancelled and rearranged well into the season.

What is piss poor? You think the club didn't want a fixture?
Firstly, if you read my post, you’d find out exactly what I think is piss poor. Secondly, at which point did I say the club didn’t want a fixture? That reply was just a load of bollocks.

SUFC are prepared, available and have the numbers to make up a fixture WITHOUT Norwich on Saturday. Make of that what you will.

Like I said previously, if we wanted a fixture, we could have one.

Most likely the club decided there wasn't much to be gained by playing against a Hen and Chickens XI. Its hard enough arranging Sunday league friendlies with a few days notice, never mind elite football.

Never ceases to amaze me how worked up people get about pre-season every year for one reason or another, whether its a defeat, a lack of glamourous opposition or the fact that you can't build a 5 day bender around the trip aboard.

The results are meaningless and if you get a decent day out from it then its a nice little bonus rather than the be all and end all. The main purpose is to equip the players for the new season - the matches that count.

Granted only 2 friendlies seems odd, but then its been an odd 18 months.

With who? as previously said, the management may well have taken the decision that the better option is not to play the Dog and Duck, but focus on individuals learning their new roles, over the weekend, training and not losing Sunday as a recovery day or picking up injuries against an 'enthusiastic' non league team.

I don't understand why we didn't do that. I think you need that many in any season if you're going to give everyone a decent run-out. Easy enough to rotate given I presume the squad is bubbled so there are 20 odd people to choose from. Play 5, give everyone at least a 90 minutes and a couple of 45s. Starting the season strongly might be the difference between promotion or not.

In terms of the weekend, I hope when they say there's no fixture it's more the fact that there's no fixture to replace Norwich for those with tickets. They surely can find someone to play behind closed doors. Just needs to be a good run-out against players giving 100%. Doesn't need to be a big side.

Surely they could do U23 v First Team behind closed doors this weekend unless they dont want First Team to be embarrased week before the opener. :)

No players of worth have been sold yet.
very hard as Man U have covid. Arsenal v Chelsea Sunday.

What a silly inaccurate comment. :)

Cant they just play in zorbs , no excuse

Exactly - I’m not annoyed we haven’t been able to play a PL side in Norwich.

I’m frustrated the entire squad haven’t completed 90 minutes in total across our preseason program.

if we’ve done enough in training then fine, but doesn’t bode well for the season starting. Sharp / mcburnie / Verrrips haven’t touched the pitch. Loads have played less than 90 minutes in total, like bogel and Freeman. Who aren’t injured but you’d hope would be contributing next season.

Again please explain how you arrange 5 friendlies with the intention of playing 1 or 2, how the other teams react to not getting the game, and why on earth they would sign up for it in the first place

This could be a taste of things to come this season games called off at very short notice and serious fixture congestion at other times in the year quite a few sides could end up in a situation similar to Rotherham at the end of last year.

I’ll explain in Layman’s terms because, clearly, it’s not clicked yet.

Norwich aren’t available Saturday. WE ARE. Slav forms two competitive squads, and away we go, we have ourselves a game.
I'll answer in laymans terms because it's not clicked yet, how do you know that's not happening at Shirecliffe or the Lane on Saturday and Sunday?

I am saying we should play 4 or 5 friendlies

we clearly arn’t aiming to play 2 with no one getting a decent run out

we usually play at least 4 - why arrange only 3 when a 5 year old could have told you some would be in jeopardy…

we had a decent Spanish side lined up, that got binned, so we played a pub side.

we had Norwich lined up for that to get binned.

if we had another 2 which had been planned over preseason we would still have been able to play at least 3 games and Slav would have seen more of his squad.
