United Season Review & School Report 20-21 - Part Eight

Final Part....Round up bits and pieces, look at my ratings as averages and some awards

Officiating / VAR
Last season we were right at the bottom of the VAR league but this season that has not been the case and we certainly cannot blame officiating/VAR for where we are! We are +3 which is joint second. West Brom are bottom with -6 going against them net.

Match Report Ratings

Interestingly, I did a spreadsheet that shows the marks for all the players from my reports -so every game took the player marks and then averages them out by number of games/ratings given – it may not totally marry up with above’s school grades but thought it was interesting. I intentionally did this after but maybe I should have done it before I did my grades.

So below is what the numbers came out in terms of averages and rankings in the team…..maybe makes a mockery of my opinions above or my ratings are nonsense! I am not sury why Wilder would get more than Heckingbottom for instance and of course O’Connell played less games, Burke did ok in some early games. Anyway, let you decide! I have attached last year’s first for reference too.

Deadbat’s Awards for 2020/21

Player of the Season: Aaron Ramsdale (Last season – Chris Basham)
Runner up: David McGoldrick (Last season – John Fleck)
Third: Chris Basham (Last season – Jack O’Connell)

Moment of the Season: Winning 2-1 at Man Utd. The only real moment where I was really proud of the side all season and I suppose in our lifetimes regardless of the season we will not win here very much. (Last season Going 2-0 up v Man Utd)

Goal of the Season: McGoldrick v Arsenal away
We have barely scored any goals so the competition is not high! Didzy’s curler at the Emirates ultimately meant nothing but was a decent finish from range. He scored a similar one at home to Burnley too which was a bit closer in maybe but another good strike. The McGoldrick team goals v Villa/away at Chelsea are the only other ones I can think of as decent goals. (Last season Lundstram 2nd v Burnley)

Best individual display: Tied: Jagielka at Man Utd and Basham v West Brom home
Two different performances. Jags was superb at Old Trafford rolling back the years and would not let them pass. Against West Brom Basham seemed to be playing them on his own and was responsible for driving us to the win in at that time a really crucial game. (Last season Egan away v Everton)

Best performance of the season: Man Utd away.
A gritty win with some good football allied to the battling and defensive performance. Out of keeping with the rest of the season. (Last season Burnley home)

Worst performance of the season: Leicester away.
So many contenders sadly. Early in the season we were losing narrowly but not playing well and then a few awful showings at Southampton and Palace. The games at West Ham and Fulham were not much better. We then had another shocker at home to Southampton before Wilder left. Games we barely had an attack and were just beaten easily. We had some bad ones under Heckingbottom. The defeat at home to Palace was pathetic but we were soundly beaten in others. The Leicester one though we completely imploded. We were embarrassingly bad and looked like a League Two or even a non-league side against a Premier League team. (Last season Newcastle away)

Pass of the season: McGoldrick v Villa
I am struggling to remember any really of note. Certainly, non stand out in terms of link up to goals as being scintillating but the McGoldrick pass to Baldock that led to the goal when Didzy then got on the end of it to finish. Actually, Brewster played a few to McGoldrick/McBurnie to miss! (Last season Norwood v Crystal Palace)

Save of the season: Ramsdale v Jon Jo Shelvey, Newcastle away
Ramsdale made a number this season and in the 2nd half of the campaign was excellent. He kept the score down in games against Liverpool, Leeds and many others really. He made one against Callum Robinson one may actually have been flagged in the end if it had gone in but at the time it was open play still and was a fantastic stop with the game level at 1-1 and we went on to win. However, his save from the Shelvey header was superb. Reflexes, agility, strength and anticipation. (Last season Dean Henderson v Norwich)

Most improved player: Kean Bryan
Ramsdale improved as the season went on but in terms of reflecting on the previous seasons, Bryan actually went from being someone who barely resembled a footballer to being just ordinary-not very good! He did well in a few games actually and in the mess of our side was no worse than many others! A real compliment that. This award has slim pickings though! (Last season Chris Basham)

Unsung hero: Phil Jagielka
Again, Ramsdale can make a shout but Jags played more games than anyone could have thought he would. His legs had clearly gone and he struggle at times as did the whole team but he also put in a few decent showings – at Man Utd and then at Chelsea in the cup after the sad loss of his brother. The fact he kept holding his hand up to play even after these tragic events said it all about him as a man and professional. Nice to see him get a send off in probably his final game for United (Last season George Baldock)

Biggest disappointment (player): Enda Stevens tied with Oliver Norwood
So many to choose from. The strikers almost to man except McGoldrick have been really disappointing with one goal between MacBurnie and Brewster. The midfield has not performed and I could make a claim for any of the three here with Norwood in particular just not looking the same player. However, Stevens has been consistently bad. Both have completely confidence and rarely done much right in games. It was remarkable they both kept getting picked but then that said as much about the rest of the squad too. (Last season Callum Robinson)

Best opponent (player) v United: Che Adams - Southampton
With so many players revelling against us, you would be hard pressed to pick one. Ziyech tore us apart in the league game at Stamford Bridge. Mane continues to be Liverpool’s main man for me when he plays against us. Maximim for Newcastle was a real threat we could not live with but did not play at the Lane. Of course, Iheanacho scored a hat trick but Adams was excellent in both games (ironically one as a sub) and just is too strong, quick and skilled for our defenders whenever they face us. (Last season Vardy / De Bruyne / Mane)

Worst opponent (player) v United: Mitrovic - Fulham
Not many teams struggled against us but Rudiger scored an awful own goal at the Lane. I also thought that the two West Brom centre backs struggled. If I had to name one though then as much as I like Mitrovic he had an absolute nightmare against us at the Lane. He missed a penalty, conceded one and then missed two sitters. (Last season Phil Jones (Man Utd)

Signing of the season: Aaron Ramsdale
Started with some mistakes and actually by Xmas I was one of those asking for him to be taken out. The reality was he probably had not been that bad and was playing behind an awful side and defence that was changing every week. He started to cut out any mistakes he had made and was excellent the 2nd half of the season and without him we would have been on the end of even more wallopings. Now looks a really good goalkeeper. Bogle did ok but he tailed off with Brewster, Lowe and Ampadu not convincing or proving anywhere close to value for money. Ramsdale was the one salvation of an appalling transfer window last summer.

Things you will miss the most about the Premier League:

The money we brought in!
Wall to wall coverage – Is good sometimes to find any game/highlights/quote – but only if you win!
Panini stickers were good (for the first season!)
Just being relevant and being talked about (again not so good this year)
The chance to beat and upset big sides

Thing you will not miss about the Premier League:
VAR
Stupid kick off times / days
Lazy punditry
Fans around the world – mainly of bigger sides jumping all over social media to criticise your team
Losing!

That's it...the end of my write up and summary / school report. All being well will do the same again at the end of next season and hopefully a better 12 months to reflect on!

Things to miss from the Premier league.
VAR. How many times next season will we be saying " If only we had VAR" . "Got to get VAR in the championship".
Hopefully none. Great reading by the way.

Thank you, I'll be honest, I have not read that many of your reports this year, I just did not have the energy, a bit like some of the team.

I am always in 90% agreement with you, Berge is an example, if asked who is our most saleable asset, we would all say Berge, but your average scores do reflect his performances and lack of impact on games 18 best last year and 13 this! I was at Palace last year and thought that was the start of the decline, we lost momentum with his signing and it upset the Apple cart, there is no doubt be looks a good prem player, but struggle to think of anything he has done apart from the odd glide past a player with no end result. I am sure he will go on and have a great career at the highest level, but he needs to be in a good team.

His performances along with all the other Prem signing, bar Rammers and Osborn, (possibly Bogle) are the reason wilder failed. I'm not 100% sure you can blame Stevens, Fleck at al, who were L1 standard when we got them. Too many when they got the pay rises became Billy big Bollocks and that never works in Sheffield.

Absolutely stunning stuff Deadbat. Genuinely can't remember the last time I didn't read one of your reports dating all the way back to the Warnock era. To produce such detailed reports throughout this shit show of a season might be your best effort yet.

Incredible fortitude to consistently churn out reports week after depressing week and then to spend the time to summarise what has been a car crash of a season.

One thing I won't miss about the EPL is the lack of games. Back to 46 including a few in midweek.... yay!

How on Earth did JOC get an average of 6 for two shocking performances?

I love the complete precision of 2019/20's average marks.

Then this season it's just left to one decimal place in a kind of who-cares manner.

Small details can sometimes sum up a season better than words will ever do.

Tbh did not even realise I had not applied a consistenty to decimal places buy yeah you are right!

Some of the marks look daft and it's not always down to my scores. Heckingbottom shod get higher than Wilder but had a few shockers and less games so affected his average. O' Connell and Jebbison only played like 2-3 games each also so marks are skewed.

Baldock, Sharp and Osborn seem a bit low and Jagielka/Ampadu a bit high.

I like Mitrovic and outside of Didzy would be better than all the other strikers we have but he was appalling at the Lane

Tremendous read and very balanced, such a depressing season in virtually every context.

Unbelievable reporting Deadbeat. Given our pathetic performances throughout the season I’m amazed at the depth of content you have provided - it could easily have been one or two words for each player eg crap, utterly crap, clueless, etc.
I was unsure whether to read them, especially the midfield review, and dredging up all of the pain and angst suffered over the season but it was quite therapeutic really and has left me feeling cleansed and looking forward to a new start in August. Thank you.

Also quite enjoyed 4 Blades in a Pub even though theirs was effectively a review of 2019-20 and this season's game at Old Trafford.
