Sid Gibson played what was described as "the game of his life" in the last day 5-1 win at Old Trafford. He was a winger I think. That was the only time we've avoided relegation on the last day of the season (well, save 1988, when we went down in the playoffs anyway afterwards).

He retired due to a knee injury he suffered in 1932 after playing more than 100 first team appearances. He was granted a benefit match between both Sheffield clubs. Later became a scout at West Ham but died aged 39

Alan Roberts

Said this a few times re Roberts, and granted I started watching United in person just after Roberts time, but he seems class on the highlights I've seen, much better than Bradshaw as a winger, Bradshaw played his best for us at right back in the 93/94 season. Paul Wood also appeared decent and Bassett shipped him out also in the top flight. I love Harry, an amazing boss, but Roberts in particular seemed a player to hang onto. Seemed Roberts didn't want to stay saying that, didn't like being subbed every game apparently! But if he'd stayed he'd have played I'm sure regularly in the First division. Why he swapped that to go to Lincoln, is beyond me!

Ronnie Simpson's career spanned more than a quarter of a century. He played in wartime football for Queen's Park when he was 14, and finished with Celtic at 40.

My first knowledge of Ronnie Simpson was watching him for Newcastle in the FACF's,1952 & 55, on TV. He then disappeared from my consciousness only to reappear with Celtic the season they won the European Cup.
Scotland had fair goalies in the 50's, Cowen being one I remember and Simpson must have been one of those, up to the 60's before the malaise set in and their goalies became music hall jokes.

In the previous season,1928-29 he played 32 league games netting 7 times, one being disputed with Phillipson.
1930-31 played 35 games netting 8 times and 1931-32, 12 games with 5 goals.
Bought from Notts Forest for a record fee, for both clubs, 2d and a conker probably, to replace David Mercer, even though he had made 252 appearances for Forest.
Sadly he died at the early age of 39.
