The stick he gets from Scotland fans Is because he's shit. No goals in 16 games, ring any bells ? The same reason he gets stick from Blades fans.

It's not the first time he's been a dick in public either is it? Swansea away end, drink driving and now this.

The police also want a word with him and it looks like he's just been arrested.
I was gonna come onto that Gannon re the Swansea away end. It was embarrassing to see him do that. Behaving like that attracts criticism, rightly so, and also makes you a target. I've done what he did countless times, away at Elland Road and Hillsborough spring to mind, obviously I'm not a professional footballer! He, and anyone else at the club need stricter guidelines on social media, maybe they're already in place but I'm sure Wilder would not approve of that. I'm not saying his behaviour doesn't need improvement, and I get why our fans are critical of this news, we all sighed and thought please don't let it be true, or at least I did.

I've got to mention Ched Evans though because I do think it's relevant. We all know what happened there and whilst there were fans who were critical of his actions at the time, without going into that, I remember most were defending him and I remember the Ched chants, then and when he signed. I think the difference is because he scored 32 goals or whatever it was in that season. As I said on previous posts, if Oli had come off the back of a great season I think comments on here would be far more gracious. Just my view, obviously.

He's a £20m striker getting paid good money and playing at the highest level. He doesn't lead a quiet life, instead he does things to antagonise people (see the Swansea away games), flaunts his privileged lifestyle on social media (flying in private jets etc) and has serious misdemeanours he's committed in the recent past (the drink driving conviction).

With all that in mind, he needs to accept that there will be people out there trying to goad him and making comments towards him, it goes with the territory. He could easily choose to lead a quieter life but that seemingly isn't the case for the reasons mentioned above. It doesn't make the actions of other people right, quite the opposite in fact, but he does need to rise above such things because he's happy to flaunt his lifestyle in front of others and therefore needs to accept some people will try and target him.

I have zero sympathy for him and feel ashamed to have him represent our club, he's a big time charlie who's performances over these last 18 months aren't at the level required of a Premier League and international level player.

I'll give him my support, I don't care if I'm the only one. Some may not agree with this but here goes. He's under scrutiny more than most of us can never imagine. We have no idea what happened before the incident and he's likely to have been goaded and then they're filming him, which I can imagine would further add to McBurnie's anger. Apparently he was goaded over our relegation, probably by Leeds fans if it's Knaresborough. At least he chuffing cares in that respect. People would be far more gracious if he'd scored 10 goals this season, he hasn't but that's not the main issue here granted. As I said before, he needs a mentor (Billy Sharp stands out obviously) and someone to guide him through this. I'm sure there's stuff like that going on, but he may need more than someone like McGoldrick. We also have no idea of his background, his parenting as a child, his private life, and his mental health. Some may be shaking their head at that, but not all are privileged to have all of that being good and then thrust into the public eye in a performance based industry. The stick he gets from Scotland fans on Twitter for example is largely so over the top.

People on here very quick to call him various names and we're all anonymous. Well I'll tell you now my name's Robin Codina (without trying to sound like Michael Caine!), find me on Facebook if you want, I'm on Wilder's Army too. I don't know Oli, but I do know that being a footballer has pressures I can't imagine and I can go out whenever I want and get no stick for it. I think as fans of United I want to give him grace, forgiveness and leave it to the club to do the talking to him.

I'll add I don't condone his actions if it's true, that is obviously important. There's standards to represent and without meaning to sound hypocritical, he does need to know that, he's not alone there though either.

He's a representative of Sheffield United Football Club. People moan about lack of money but this kind of thing is what put sponsors and investors (and other commercial interests) off partnering with us. He is sullying the reputation of the club with his off the field antics. This might not be uncommon for England but we're a club trying to establish a global 'brand'. He's literally costing us money and dragging our club through the mud.

That's the problem though, he never seems to learn. He's continually acting like a prick. It's not an isolated incident and I very much doubt it will be the last either.

It's a dick move by McB , no doubt.
But, I agree, this happens with lots of footballers. Lots are playing because that's where their skill lies, not in other areas, and social skills might be low on their list, who knows.
They are then put under a microscope and somewhere along the line people have said they should be role models.
They never were role models. Just footballers.
He deserves the book throwing at him for the drink driving. This daftness is similar to other stupidity some young men get involved in. They are young and stupid, same as him.
If it wasn't him, it would never see the pages of a free local paper.
Not saying it's ok. Saying why do people imagine other people can be something they aren't.

Instead of going out and acting like an uneducated chav, he needs to stay in. Read a Shakespearean tragedy or listen to one of Bach's piano concertos. Stop following the crowd Oli and grow up. And while you're at it, ditch that stupid beard.

At companies I've worked at, the representatives we put in front of high flying customers and investors, were 40 year olds, with years of people skills under their belts.
We didn't normally get 19-24 year olds who were good at other stuff to do it.

Give over

But as a professional footballer that excuse doesn't wash. Whether they like it or not, they are role models especially when they are playing to a global audience in the Premier League. They are happy to take the riches that brings them, so they need to behave professionally in all aspects of their personal life too.

Whilst the daftness is similar to stupidity which other young men get involved in, McBurnie is not like other young men and holds a privileged position.

Not sure why the lad feels he needs to get involved and wind him up. McBurnie asks him to stop filming and he carries on filming for no apparent reason other than winding him up. He gets hit then cries about it for abit of media attention

It is obvious there was a altercation before once the got him aggrivated the scum bag filmed it

Getting paid loadsa money, doesn't change somebodies personality for the good.
If we need that, we need to change the recruitment policy to employ 35 year old plus, with nice calm dispositions. Preferably accountancy or PR background.

Old guys basically.

Robson's contact book should still be down the back of the drinks cabinet

No, but they have a duty to represent the club not just on the pitch but off it too and behaviour like this is not acceptable, regardless of his personality.

Apparently not insurance brokers though.

Covid is real & 9/11 was an outside job. Don't @ me.

Considering it’s an ongoing police investigation, it’s probably best for the owners of this forum if you delete the name of the ‘victim’ off this thread.
Wasn't it named in the press anyway though?

Um, anonymity has been waived to feature in the Sun?

the victim named in a national newspaper that one

Fair enough - didn’t read the Sun article!

You've already done that joke Dronnie to my last post! Sorry I've not mastered the multi quote option from post above!
I’m looking for a Batman one as I type 😉.

Thwak will have to do for now 😂.

UTB

ps defend his off field antics as much as you like. Knock yourself out.

The on field stuff is, emphatically, indefensible !

If a player is playing well then fans will go to all sorts of lengths to defend them (i.e. Ched). If they aren't playing well then fans are happy to see an incident like this as an opportunity for the club to cut them loose. Often these same fans will claim there is no loyalty in football any more.

I won't pretend I know the ins and outs of what happened as I only have the video to go on, I can only guess the full story As a high profile footballer you can't go round brawling in the street. This isn't a double standard for footballers...everybody has to think what getting arrested would look like to an employer.

That said this clearly wasn't an unprovoked 'attack' (handbags is probably more accurate, he stamped on his phone rather than his head). In all honesty what would you expect if you started filming and goading a total stranger? Maybe McBurnie has to put up with this everywhere he goes and just snapped (the counter argument to this is maybe you should think harder about where you go boozing if this keeps happening)?

Seems like the so called victim has already sniffed out a cash windfall selling his story to the Sun. Anything appearing in those pages can be safely filed away as complete and utter shite.

As for McBurnie the footballer. I hope to see him in the red and white next season. He is a proven goal scorer at championship level. Its not worked out so far for him playing at PL level, maybe its a step too far for him ability wise or maybe we aren't using him right. He has certainly been used differently to how he was at Swansea and Barnsley. Learning how to become a target man on the job in the PL is a tough gig. Like the rest of our centre forwards he gets precious little service and in my view at least gives 100% when he plays.
