In an ideal world I'd scrap the the League Cup, scrap whatever the paint trophy is called now, streamline international qualifiers and do away with a ton of friendlies, and then we'd have far less trouble with fixture congestion. If there's too much free time we can always let a few more teams into the league.
Fact is that the cups are dying. Maybe it means more to some of the other teams down there but even in League One we all used to talk about how we should rest players for cup games. The glory of being the one shock team a year outside the Prem to lose in the quarters isn't that exciting any more. And then when we made it to the Prem last season...the league was still more important than playing too strong a side in the cup. Only a few select teams are actually in it to win it and for the rest it's a cash boost at best.
And that's the real problem again, the money. That and my fear that any reduction in fixture congestion would just be immediately filled again by someone seeing a gap and thinking "I bet we could cram some more European games in there". But as a spectacle, the cups are crap.
