Am I the only one who hates those, fabricated discussions between Lineker, Shearer, Wright or Richards?

The whole things look really false, contrived and completely patronising, like the viewers won't know this, but actually, Julian Dicks was a dirty bastard and that Duncan Ferguson invariably lead with his elbow?

How lucky we’ve got these ex pros to give us us mere mortals the inside track, all about what goes on in the game? 🙄

Watch it again, they mention him when talking about players pre premier league era, I know you'd think at times there was no football before the premier league. Billy would have sorted Duncan 😀

I'm not fully convinced of that, but it would have been an extremely interesting encounter, don't you know.☺️

In defence of Big Dunc, didn't he once beat the shit out of a burglar then sit on him til the police arrived? And he didn't he do a stretch in a Cat A prison?

That's put him on a different level to some cunt who used to be snidey with late tackles and leaving a foot in...
As they mentioned on the show, he dragged the burglar back in his house 😂

Why that filthy prick Keane is still appearing on tv is beyond me. To big him up as a “hard man” when he committed a cowardly act of GBH on Haaland and ended his career speaks volumes about the moral compass of the inner circle of Lineker et al. He should have been given a custodial sentence for what he did. As1889 said, Dicks was just a thug who belonged in Sunday pub league football.
Hard men are those who play fairly but without fear, never neshing a 50:50 or thinking twice about putting their head in when it’s going to hurt. Basham is much more of a hard man than Keane or Dicks.

They did mention Billy Whitehurst early in the programme when they were talking about hard men pre PL years

Havent seen it ,but if Micky Droy ,Mick harford and Noel Blake dont make it ,its a load of shit.

Top 10 hard men.... no big Billy W!!!

Regards hardmen they always judge based on “hardness on the pitch” as that’s public knowledge.
Vinnie Jones always appears in these types of polls....however when they asked Billy about Vinny‘s hardness credentials.
Billy Whitehurst’s reply was “Vinny has made a career out of acting....which tells you something about his personality”

Then there’s the sinister area of “hardness off the pitch” or plain out and out nut cases.
This is a controversial area and not always available to public knowledge. Also it’s kind of glorifying violence.
Theres a difference between being tough and going out to intimidate, almost bully opponents.

Billy Whitehurst proudly admitted many times he would target players......wait for the right moment....then get the ball first then follow up going through the player.
In them days it was classed as a hard challenge and you didn’t even receive a yellow card. Billy admits the physical side was the main part of his game.

Roy Keane is just an angry man, not a hard man. Look at all that posturing in the tunnel with Vieira when he knew the cameras were on him. Claims it "shook Vieira up" - utter rubbish. Then there was the "hold me back lads" incident with Shearer, where Shearer just stood his ground smirking at Keane.

Jimmy Scoular, complete with sinister sneer. Different level hard man.

He looks the type to snap a player in two and then quickly bury him under the pitch before the ref saw him. Wonder how many opposition players mysteriously disappeared during a game when he was playing? Probably where the saying 'is that a foldable shovel down your shorts or are you just pleased to see me?' comes from.

Nice little obituary to Jimmy. "Tackled like a runaway coal wagon" 😁

You sure about that ?
Yes, he was a more than half decent footballer but never let much of that emerge, finding his time consumed with the motivator, protector side of the game. Watching, I always got the impression there could, at any moment, be an incident which would upset the team momentum or result in a personnel official punishment.
Personnel opinion, which I believe I'm entitled to.
I feel your reply has a mildly threatening tone, are you Chris Morgan?
If it's ok to ask that is.

I doubt many people will remember this guy but years ago, around 1986/87 if I remember correctly, my mate was a YTS with Wednesday. He was told that Garry Thompson was a proper hard case. probably best remembered as a Villa player.

I know Italian defenders are tough but the guy in the middle is playing with bullet holes in his legs!

I have to admit I saw the Pigs a few times in my early teens in the 80's with my Grandad as he supported them. They were playing Man Utd and Whiteside was bullying them for the first 20 minutes, making surging runs and no one could get the ball off him. Thompson was a striker but had the physique of a bodybuilder. Whiteside went off on another run and Thompson proper shoulder barged him with a sickly thud you could hear all round the ground. Whiteside was bowled over and was not seen for the rest of the game. The Pigs ended up winning 1-0.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there being classed as "hard" in football is not just about kicking crap out of another player when you take the ball its also about carrying on when you have had an accidental knee in the face half your teeth have gone, nose is broken and bloody bandage round your head and you still play onto the end. Quite a few times Morgan would get smashed in the face for defending a corner and have his head bandaged up and carry on.
