They are already getting wet on Porktalk about another free ground upgrade.

And that's the point isn't it? The Council using public funds to upgrade their stadium because it's "in the best interests of the future of the City". As if £20m of free money from Co-Op Bank wasn't enough

Why has it been made jointly with the Republic of Ireland? In footballing terms, it could've just been England anyway and combining into the UK or GB to make a bid only reinforces the calls that are made every now and again for England, Scotland and Wales to combine into a GB team. Or does including the Republic defuse that and make it look like a 5 country bid?

let's be honest "England" could easily host it, but everybody hates us so OK let's be inclusive and make it UK, but since Brexit everybody hates the UK and the Irish always have so the only way we get the World Cup is to show everyone how chummy and inclusive we are.

I don't know why we don't go the whole hog and invite Argentina to bid with us and have the Final in Port Stanley. We could even hand Clarkson over.

Fuck the World Cup. I'm in the ageing category of fans too and before I peg it would prefer to see United actually win something at the Lane rather than get all excited at the prospect of watching Iran vs Morocco.

I'm with you Snooty I'm living day to day and not interested in things a few years away, on saying that though I can understand our younger fans getting excited at the prospect. I still think the rust bucket could be on verge of total collapse and they'd still get it, in regards to Bramall Lane they are very short sighted we are near all or most of the links.

It seems that England (possibly Britain) are going to bid for the 2030 World Cup, and early indications are that we are in with a real chance of getting it.
How likely would it be that Bramall Lane could host some matches? There will be 48 teams and 80 games by then in an expanded World Cup.
I guess Hillsborough would be ahead of us (sadly!) but surely there is a chance both grounds could feature, especially if we get into the Premier League and develop our stadium.
It would also fit in nicely with the Prince's role in Saudi Arabia's 2030 strategy.

They’ll be a random ground too seem to think for some strange reason last time that Southampton/Plymouth and Bristol city were in the mix.
Sheffield will be overlooked because our ground can’t hold a fan park near by and Hillsborough is a dated shithile

From 2026, World Cups will have 48 teams instead of 32. The US, Mexico and Canada World cup will have 16 stadiums (3 in Mexico, 3 in Canada, 10 in USA).

It also states that stadiums must be a minimum 40,000 capacity. Clubs with an asterisk have a current capacity below 40K.

So if we're saying 16 stadiums with London having 2, the list "could" look like this:

1. London (Wembley)
2. London (West Ham or Spurs)
3. Dublin (Croke or Aviva)
4. Cardiff (Principality)
5. Belfast (New Stadium)
6. Glasgow (Celtic or Hampden)
7. Manchester (Old Trafford)
8. Liverpool (Anfield)

10. Birmingham (Villa Park)
11. Leeds (Elland Road)*

Which leaves 4 additional stadiums available from:

• Sunderland (Stadium of Light)

• Wolves (Molineux)*

I wonder if Scotland would want one in Edinburgh? In which case Murrayfield.

If Villa Park needs upgrading to meet requirements, surely loads will.

Don't think you're a million miles off with that main list except that there is no way the organisers would risk picking either side of the Old Firm divide (ridiculous as that may be). It'd be Hampden as the main venue in Scotland with Murrayfield thrown in too.

Same for Dublin: there's some form of sentimentality attached to Croke Park which means that it's only used for Gaelic sports; they got in a real flap about having the rugby there while Lansdowne Road (the Aviva) was being being redeveloped.
