Worst season of mine, and many fans lives

Started supporting this club as a 4 year old in 1993.

We've been through some shit as fans, we've not had it easy, but my god, this season is so far above the worst season ever, I don't think it will ever be beaten by a worse one in future. Truly awful circumstances for fans, but also awful circumstancers for players, too. They are human just like fans, they are having to play in conditions that a year ago nobody would have thought would ever happen. In July last year, playing sometimes 3 games in 7 days, causing injuries which not only fucked us, but also other clubs like Liverpool. Do we seriously believe Liverpool would have lost 7-2 against Villa had fans been in stadiums?

I think as fans, we accepted relegation in December but hoped we would not break Derby's unwanted record (which we probably won't). I've been thinking for the past 2-3 months, lets just get this season over, and reinforce in the summer and go again. I look at teams like Norwich, who also finished dead last last season and are now flying with a few loan signings, whilst only losing 2 players for big money (Lewis and Godfrey).

In terms of our current team, realistically I can't see anyone paying the money we would ask for JOC, Berge after long injuries, so I'm pretty confident they'll be back with us next season.

Lundstram will almost certainly leave, and I'd expect others such as Osborn, Robinson, Moussett and maybe Stevens to leave to allow us to recoup some of the losses we will incur due to relegation.

Norwood - Although he's had a poor season this year, he's got 3 promotions to the PL with 3 different clubs, he'll be one of the best players in the Championship, again.
Fleck - He'll be one of the top midfielders in the league.
Ramsdale - He'll be one of the top GK's in the league
JOC - Will be one of the best CB's in the league
Egan - Will be one of the best CB's in the league
Basham - Still has a lot to give, great servant
Baldock - Will be one of the best wing back's in the league
Bogle - Will be one of the best wing back's in the league
Sharp - Will have a role to play in the Championship
Brewster - Has experience scoring in Champioonship
McBurnie - Has experience scoring in Championship

I believe with a few loanee's and a few new midfielders, we will be comfortably one of the best teams in the division. As much as relegation hurts, we're a stronger team for it.

I look at Sunderland, Ipswich, Bolton, Hull, Portsmouth, who all eventually overspent in the Premier League to "compete" it didn't work, and they came down worse for it (some suffering bakruptcy). We are opposite and I think we owe Wilder and the board credit for that.

For that reason, we should go with this management team.. and the most important part of this? We will all be there! 📣📣

Going down to the fourth division was a much worse season than this one. Having said that this one is awful I have to admit.

I know people say "but we're in the Premier League" and I get that, being shit in the Prem is better than being shit anywhere else, but if you look at it from the perspective that we are supposed to be a Premier League team, and aren't here because of a clerical error, this is the shittest we've been in my life in context. We're so far off our peers it's embarrassing.

The injury situation, Covid and the fact we were stuffed so early will at least make it less painful than last time we went down from the Premier League.

This all day long. Drives me mad when people say but, but, but we were in League One a short while ago. You are good or bad in relation to where you are playing so this season we are worse than we were in Division Three when we got relegated. Ask any sane football fan if they'd rather see their team successful in a lower division or complete shite in a higher one. Watching the team you love losing every week is fucking terrible in whichever league they're in. I would honestly take missing out in the championship play offs over being a global embarrassment.

This season reminds me of that one. We just missed out on European football the previous season too. That season we had Currie, Woodward etc and as a 9 yr old I had hope right until the end. We beat Man U that season too!
We didn’t play Man Utd in 74/75 when we just missed out. We played them the following season & lost 5-1 away & 4-1 at home!
75-76 we got well beaten a lot of times & were effectively down as early as this season

For the ones that missed the 80's...............you lucky lucky people !

For the ones that didn't - we suffered - really really suffered

and just for reference - if you go back to the early 70's - best team in my lifetime.

As for this season, it's been tough, but we are among the best league in world football - we'll be back and hopefully learn from mistakes made.

UTB

PS: it could be a whole lot worse................take a look over at S6

Hard to believe now but Man United were relegated in 1973/74 so we didn't have to play them

After 26 games in 1975-76 we were 5 wins away from 4th bottom, just like now. We scored 18 and conceded 54. This season we scored 15 and conceded 43 so 1975-76 was worse

Fair play Silent. I just saw the Newport stat and if sank in how ridiculously bad this season has been. How many points did we finish on that season?

This season isn’t even close to the Adkins season or the Robson season, let alone the season we got relegated with Micky Adams down to league 1...

We’ve been really shit and i remember the relegation seasons with Warnock and Bassett being a devastating blow as it was quite a shock, last day and all that. But yes they were better seasons than this one

The saving grace for this season is that we’ve not been there as fans. It’s just been shit on tv, turn it off rather than sit in the cold. But the positive side of this season is that we have a squad of younger players coming through and it’ll be an exciting season next year as they develop and push the championship hard

We finished with 22 points (2 points for a win back then) with 6 wins although I think 4 of these came after we were confirmed as relegated.

We're still in the hardest division in the world, it's a hard watch sometimes yes, but we have a slim chance, very very slim. We will still hopefully have the best manager we've had in years and some of the better players when we go again next season, we should be competitive, we have hope (yes some say it's hope that kills you).

1980/81 was terrible, this isn't good granted but my lad is 12 and been going 8 years, it's not even his worst season! Cast your mind back to the end of the Adkins' season, the club was about to die and had become not a nice place, it was horrible and we had nothing to look forward to, the noisy neighbours were a division above too. We had no hope at all, same as the Robson period, it was like watching a pet dog slip away.

Be thankful for what you have

No, we lost 5-1 and 4-1 to them

Deffo my worst season ended with Don Givens' penalty.

Surely by definition, that has to be the 'worst ever' as the result of it was, that we dropped to the lowest level of the Football League - we had never been in Division 4 before and it felt like the end of the world.

This season has been appalling and we may well end up with our lowest ever points total, but at the end of it we are back in the Championship.

Five years ago under Unseen Geese man, we'd have given our collective left bollocks to get back in the Championship, so that's a reflection of how far we've come. I get the disappointment, but this season is so odd with the virus and no fans, that it almost seems surreal.

We’ve lost 21 out of 26 games. This is as bad as it gets for any team, at any level.

It's definitely one of the worst seasons I can remember. More so from a performance perspective. We play not to lose rather than to win.... not to mention playing hoof ball.

It's been bloody awful and at times embarrassing. If the snortbeasts were top 6 we'd be getting pelters but luckily tunaman's playthings are headed for pastures new.

I do find myself on the fence regarding next season. I'm disappointed in our lack of planning so far in terms of tactics and personnel with the new campaign in mind and yes of course given the circumstances of the season and everything that's happened in the last few years CWAK have a nailed on right to take us forward if they want to, and I SO want them to be successful, bring us back and keep us there. I do think the tide will turn if we're not top 6 (at LEAST top 8) at Christmas and anything lower than that I'm off the fence as I think many others would be. Love CW and hope he's more Messiah than Naughty Boy but in the end this is football.

I started in 1970/71 so for me

1980/81 was the worst. Relegation to Division 4. Gutless performances from the players.

2015/16 under Adkins was probably the second worst. It was touch and go whether I renewed my season ticket that year.
Playing in white shirts and red shorts. That alone makes it THE worst season.

I agree- All of this talk about worst season of my life is such a load of shit - it’s all about expectations, and getting your head out of your arse and seeing the sun.

We have just had the best 4 seasons in my (since 1971 season ticket ) memory. Last season we overperformed to a huge extent riding on a wave of Wilder emotion.

Roygbiv saying worst season ever is wrong. In 74/75 we were on the edge of Europe and in 75/76 against the top 19 clubs we had 7 points (in today’s money) from 26 games. That was my worst season as we had debt, were selling off our best players to pay for a stand and a cross-toothed inarticulate manager who had less ideas aout football tactics than my dead grandmother.

Our average position in English football over the last 50 years is 30. We are going into the Championship next season with no debt, with a great owner and manager and coach (PA/Wilder/Knill) and a host of young players with potential.

For fuck’s sake get rid of this Billy big Bollocks attitude and see where we have been recently and where we can go with what this owner/ manager/ coach have built.

Magic isn’t really Magic - it’s about Knowledge, Planning and Patience.

Why do we need to endure this endless fucking moaning?
Yes its a shitty season. We entered it with zero squad resilience. We had a decent first team and some back up players.
Hardly any break since restart with 2 games a week. Squad is decimated. Not enough fit and in firm quality players in the squad to fill the team.
Can't change it till next transfer window or injury hit players return.
FFS shut the fuck up and suck it up!
We go again next season with some new players added to the best of what we have. End of.

I am going to LOL literally at this...

OK I have blanked it out ( I get depression at the best of times!) but fuck me backwards....

If the option of getting thrashed shitless in the best league in the world (maybe) had been on offer sometime between 1976 and 1990 I think we all would have said yes please.....

One thing that is worth comment is how much the crowd do make a difference....
The Old "12th man cliche" maybe aint that far off reality....

I remember when we were getting spanked week in, week out at the end of 1990, people were still right behind Bassett because the team was flogging its guts out. This one isn’t.

So there’s a difference. If you’d asked fans between 1976 and 1990 if they’d have been happy seeing their team go down fighting as we were in 1990 or just bending over for everyone as we are now, I suspect you’d have got very different answers.

I think you need to put things into perspective. We had a year in the Premier League and did fantastically. OK, so we are going down and will have to manage on the parachute payment. :) We have one of the best managers in UK football and have a good chance of getting straight back IMHO. Just remember the wonderful weeks and months we've had under Wilder. Some of the best football I have seen from a Blades team. You don't need to go back too far to remember us being relegated to the fourth division. Only a few years ago we were enjoying the likes of the 2 Nigels and Micky Adams in the 3rd division. Do you really think this season is worse than that dross? Give your head a wobble.
Maybe but you dont just press the esc key or delete button at the end of the season. This shit sticks and I am not sure Wilder is tough enough to resolve it. Why he now blames everything but himself is beyond me. Playing 4-4-2 against Liverpool we looked a lot better. Why not start like that ffs? Instead it's the George Graham approach to football and for those old enough the Jack Charlton boring Middlesbrough approach prior to Graham.

Football is about entertainment. If we lost games 2-5 at least we'd bloody well score! It is turgid awful crap and only two people are responsible for that Wilder and Knill. We've gone from exciting to bloody shite and boring, constantly giving the ball away in possession that leads to goals conceded.

If you keep making the same mistakes.... then bloody well do something about it ! It isn't rocket science it is one of life's early lessons, that most people learn. Clearly Wilder has forgotten that and for that the management take responsibility. Thankfully only 12 more games to put up with this bollocks.

Like I said I have now shut my mind off...

In 76 I understood what was going off but it was first time so it was obviously oin to get better...
In 90 we just dint care cos we where at least "where we should be" lol or rather where we thought we should be....
