Worst season of mine, and many fans lives

Started supporting this club as a 4 year old in 1993.

We've been through some shit as fans, we've not had it easy, but my god, this season is so far above the worst season ever, I don't think it will ever be beaten by a worse one in future. Truly awful circumstances for fans, but also awful circumstancers for players, too. They are human just like fans, they are having to play in conditions that a year ago nobody would have thought would ever happen. In July last year, playing sometimes 3 games in 7 days, causing injuries which not only fucked us, but also other clubs like Liverpool. Do we seriously believe Liverpool would have lost 7-2 against Villa had fans been in stadiums?

I think as fans, we accepted relegation in December but hoped we would not break Derby's unwanted record (which we probably won't). I've been thinking for the past 2-3 months, lets just get this season over, and reinforce in the summer and go again. I look at teams like Norwich, who also finished dead last last season and are now flying with a few loan signings, whilst only losing 2 players for big money (Lewis and Godfrey).

In terms of our current team, realistically I can't see anyone paying the money we would ask for JOC, Berge after long injuries, so I'm pretty confident they'll be back with us next season.

Lundstram will almost certainly leave, and I'd expect others such as Osborn, Robinson, Moussett and maybe Stevens to leave to allow us to recoup some of the losses we will incur due to relegation.

Norwood - Although he's had a poor season this year, he's got 3 promotions to the PL with 3 different clubs, he'll be one of the best players in the Championship, again.
Fleck - He'll be one of the top midfielders in the league.
Ramsdale - He'll be one of the top GK's in the league
JOC - Will be one of the best CB's in the league
Egan - Will be one of the best CB's in the league
Basham - Still has a lot to give, great servant
Baldock - Will be one of the best wing back's in the league
Bogle - Will be one of the best wing back's in the league
Sharp - Will have a role to play in the Championship
Brewster - Has experience scoring in Champioonship
McBurnie - Has experience scoring in Championship

I believe with a few loanee's and a few new midfielders, we will be comfortably one of the best teams in the division. As much as relegation hurts, we're a stronger team for it.

I look at Sunderland, Ipswich, Bolton, Hull, Portsmouth, who all eventually overspent in the Premier League to "compete" it didn't work, and they came down worse for it (some suffering bakruptcy). We are opposite and I think we owe Wilder and the board credit for that.

For that reason, we should go with this management team.. and the most important part of this? We will all be there! 📣📣

I know people say "but we're in the Premier League" and I get that, being shit in the Prem is better than being shit anywhere else, but if you look at it from the perspective that we are supposed to be a Premier League team, and aren't here because of a clerical error, this is the shittest we've been in my life in context. We're so far off our peers it's embarrassing.

The injury situation, Covid and the fact we were stuffed so early will at least make it less painful than last time we went down from the Premier League.
 
It's not even the worst season of the past five years.

Have people forgot how utterly hopeless we were when we finished 11th in League One?

The entire club was on it's knees and we looked a million miles away from ever even getting back to the Championship.

Back then I'd become so apathetic towards Sheffield United that we had players who I wouldn't even recognise if they walked past me in the street.

People seem to get uptight when you say it's the worst season as we've had worse teams but they are different things. This team still beats most of the others I've seen supporting United but it's highly unlikely (touch wood) we will lose as many games in a season ever again. We have lost over 80% of our games! It's unlike anything we've experienced before.


It doesn't mean the club is in a bad place overall and it doesn't mean we have nothing to look forward to. People may have even enjoyed this season more than previous ones but taken purely as a season, pound for pound, it's currently not an argument in terms of statistics that it's the worst season in our history. It's very likely it will be one of the worst seasons any club has ever had in this country.
 
This is the shittest and least enjoyable season in my lifetime, the only decent thing to come out of it is I haven’t had to pay for the fucker.

Let’s be honest, football in general is garbage at the moment as is life in general, I just can’t wait until we can get back to the Lane on a Saturday, yes a fucking Sat-ur-day and give some support to the lads and do all the things we love doing on the match day experience, not being able to do all this has helped in making this my worst season ever, that’s without the mishaps of our management and players which I can’t be arsed to get into as I’ll be here all week and I’m sure no one wants that!
 
Nothing will ever compare to the pit I felt in my stomach after that Southend home game under Wilder I thought we genuinely had nowhere to go but down after that. Although I do agree I have never seen us so polarized in relation to our competition. Some weeks we genuinely look like a League 1 side that is huffing and puffing in a cup game. Lets hope plenty of people at the club wake up over the next few months.
 
Reference to our worst ever season, I trawled through some Clareboroughs. It seems 75-76 is the worst when we went down with 22 pts. There was a number of seasons with 15-21 pts during WW2 but most games played was 24 (many less). We will do it sadly in it being the worst ever statistically.

Of course we have had worse teams and been a lot lower league wise but as a stand alone season for defeats and the lack of competing this will never be rivalled for ineptitude (granted at the highest level) as Roygbiv says.

In a weird way of course we had worst players and teams in those recent League 1 days but even under Weir and Adkins I still felt we might do something in most games. Even the games we list other than a handful we might score or have a few shots. At the moment we literally know we are going to lose every game. It's just a case of by how many. Even in League 1 I am not sure we would get outclassed every week? Sure we were hopeless a few games but there would be the odd win here or there or even glimpse. At the moment we are hopeless, not good enough and losing easily. We literally have no chance of even getting a draw.

We are losing every week...and have lost almost every game this season. 21 defeats from 26 is it? We will go down as it stands as one of the worst teams in any league. Ever.

It’s a fair point. Statistically it is the worst season in our history.

The 80-81 season was also a season of firsts (Div 4) and the manner it happened was horrific, I’ll never forget that night in the JSS with my dad.

I can fully understand people feeling worse in other seasons. Im not old enough to recall 80-81 but I imagine that was horrific.

For me though , as bromtom says, it doesn't really matter what league you are in. If you win you feel good, if you lose you feel bad. Obviously the wins last season meant more than the ones in League One and the defeats were easier to accept but essentially we just want to see our team win football matches. This season has been my personal worst as we have lost 21 out of 26 and I've not even been able to enjoy the experience of a match day. I imagine away days would be fantastic at the moment. Everyone knowing we are down and so just going to enjoy our last few weeks in the Premier League..

We've got nothing though. No memories, barely any wins and our embarrassing season has been broadcast to everyone week after week. This is a season we will hark back to for decades and say "do you remember how horrible that was?"
 
It’s the worst season I remember (I go back to 1988). We went down scrapping to the end in 1994 and 2007, and as crap as we were in 2011, at least it wasn’t under such a spotlight. What bothers me isn’t that the quality isn’t there - it frequently wasn’t under Bassett and Warnock - but that the mentality isn’t either. The players and staff have been resigned to relegation since very early on. The quality problem will be less next season by virtue of being in a lower league, but I don’t see any sign of the mentality being sorted. I’d love to be playing us first game next season.
 
It's been shit beyond shit this season but then last season was sublime, before the you know what intervened. It's all so totally freakish in the current circumstances it's hard to really judge it objectively.

It’s true that this season has been surreal, but Covid happened to everybody. If that is going to explain why we’ve done so badly, the question is why we handled it so much worse than every other club. If it is because we are more reliant on our fans to be the 12th man than other teams, consider the implications of that: that our crowd are the difference between finishing 9th and getting relegated in the second most humiliating top flight season ever. If that is the case, it matters much less who our manager happens to be.

Have to disagree. What about the Adkins or Robson years? The promotion to the prem season was one of the greatest apart from maybe the triple assault season and last season which took us all by surprise. We're going down and i'm accepting of it, we'll be fine - we'll be back stronger.

What are you basing that on?

Robson was frustrating, seeing all that money get wasted, but it was never as week in, week out, soul squashing my depressing as it is now. Adkins was wank, but at least nobody much cared beyond Sheffield.
 
An ubershite season compounded by not being able to vent in person, but the league one wilderness years felt more depressing tbh.
 
It's been an absolute shocker so far, but until the final ball is kicked in May, then it's hard to say conclusively how bad this season will rank in our history. At the end of the day we are still in the top flight, with a lot of games left to play.

The OP has a track record of posting negative bollocks at every opportunity though, and whilst he might ultimately be right on this occasion, he should never be allowed to forget the "Bottlejobs" thread after the Millwall draw in the promotion season. He looked like a right tit a few weeks later, so perhaps best to keep your powder dry occasionally, despite how shit things feel at the time?

I like to think the players that day read the bottlejobs post. Maybe Wilder pinned it on the wall. Hopefully he's reading this right now, too.

I don't see us turning this one around, though.

We weren't basement boys, multiple games adrift of the next shittest team, who themselves look on their way to being only a bit less shit than last seasons shittest team who everyone took the piss out of for being so shit.

In my opinion you have to take the league we're in now compared to where we were a few years ago out of it. When we were floundering around in League One, no-one said "well we're in League One, could be worse we could be in the Vanarama North", not that I heard anyway.

You play against who's in your league, and whatever league that is you shouldn't be as embarrassingly out of your depth as we are. I feel like I don't know these players to be honest, they've been replaced with Jimmy Fleck, Olivier Norwould, and Edna Stephans etc. Player of the season should be cancelled or done in private and announced at 3am on a Tuesday on Bebo or something. There's nothing to celebrate.

It's going to be a long road before we get back any semblance of what we have been I reckon. Even with fans back, we'll all be elated to be there, but mostly to be back at the Lane, I think unless we have a clear out, put some academy lads in, and we start next season playing some positive football, it's going to take a good while before we get back the relationship we had with this group, who have this season shown all the signs of putting a skidmark on Sheffield United's history book and their own time with us.

The only positives this season for me are Billy and Didzy getting a few more goals in the Prem, and having less stress and a bit more free time in my weekends after I just started looking at match updates rather than watching it live.

Fans dont make much of a difference. If anything, they can be a hinderance.

Example. I play the bassoon. I wouldnt be able to play the bassoon as well if I had some fat drunkard shouting "wanker" at me.
 
Personally I find this season the worst. I have been a fan since 1984. There were ups and downs. League 1. Championship and Premier League. I never got over depressed in League 1. I was hopeful and optimistic that we could get it right. Frustrated with Adkins and his analysis post game. I didn't get carried away with last season or was I overly negative about our poor form this season. Relegation wasn't going to knock me about. But the Fulham game just took the biscuit. The lack of skills, athleticism and drive. Out played against relegation rivals. That was the low point for me. It just showed me how far off the pace we are. How disjointed and reinforced the idea in my head that we need major surgery to play at PL level.
The worst so far.

I take the point but to each of us whether a season is worse than other seasons is purely subjective.
I have not enjoyed this season, but still watch each match, but did not at the end of Atkins reign for example
 



It's not even a real season, just write it off. It will be written about as a season that had crazy results and circumstances for years to come.

Write it off and hope that we're not shit when things are 'normal' again.
