That is interesting, the sewage works are still there

Thanks for the photo of the monument to my grandad! Not the most glamorous of topics, but I became quite proud of it. I always thought of him as a right-wing Tory, but when I did some family history some years back, I was really surprised by his Parish Council activities. He seemed to be the prime mover in this project (the stench was presumably make life unpleasant), and he was given the role of persuading the powers-that-be in the big city (Chesterfield) to get the thing built, and he had written into the contract that a certain percentage of the workers had to be recruited from the unemployed in Unstone and Dronfield. I fully approve.

I was there too but I was disappointed with Pele's performance. I hadnt realised that before the match he demanded appearance money but the Santos directors said "No"

Me too. Can you believe the school let us have the afternoon off to go. (Can't remember if we actually got free tickets).
I too was disappointed with Pele, but the Santos no.9 , Edu , was outstanding.

Edu had a powerful free kick saved by Peter Grummitt in the 1st half

Carlisle 1 (Owen) Blades 0

Again, my dad didnt trust his car for the long trip to Carlisle so we went to watch Wendy beat Bristol City 2-0 (Mick Prendergast scored both goals). We were stood in the Leppings Lane end and my dad was chatting with a friendly family from Bristol, the two daughters were both good looking and had a lovely smile but they were about 6 to 8 years older than me!

During half time I was looking towards the Kop end to see the half time scores on the electronic scoreboard and up came "Carlisle United 1 Sheffield United 0". I was thinking there is time for us to equalise and maybe score the winner . When the final whistle sounded at S6, a Wendy fan (think he might be from Dronfield) came up to have a chat with my dad as they knew each other, I kept my eye on the electronic scoreboard but up came "Carlisle United 1 Sheffield United 0". My heart sank and then I noticed that the Wendy fan (who was talking to my dad) pointing at me and going "Ha ha ha". What a twat!

During the season we have had three legendary ex-players reporting on our matches. Albert Stubbins, Sam Bartram and now Len Shackleton!

Apart from Geoff Salmons that was probably our strongest team. The reports were complimentary and you could feel that the team were beginning to gel together.

Noticed a certain Bob Hatton playing for the opposition. He'll be playing an integral part in our history some 10 years later and in a completely different division.

Bits and pieces to do with that game, below. I took a position on the Kop behind the goal, always my preferred position. I often end up focussed on the goalie, but this time it was the Pele penalty (one of the pictures shows it). It was spell-binding, and mesmerised Springett as much as the rest of us. Afterwards he claimed a moral victory, saying that Pele wanted him to dive before he kicked the ball; the truth is, he knew no more about it than the rest of us!

My dad went to that one. He saw Pele playing brilliant but I saw Pele not playing brilliant!

We were supposed to play a home league match against Hull City but it got re-arranged for Tuesday March 9th because Hull were playing in the FA Cup 6th round match against Stoke. Ken Wagstaff put Hull two up with his cool finishing but Stoke fought back scoring three to win the tie.

Bit late in posting today Silent. Had to check to see if we were playing and could see that the Hull match was a re-arranged date.

Were Wednesday supposed to have been playing at Leicester that day?

Blades 1 (Hemsley) Sunderland 0

The first time I saw a photo of Jim Montgomery (similar to the photo below) was during the 1969-70 season and it made me think "The reason why Sunderland are around the bottom of the first division is because their keeper is cross eyed"

How wrong was I to judge a footballer by how he looked! He gave one of the finest goalkeeping displays I have ever seen and I have always been a fan of his and I was to meet him 6 years later (more of that later). He made a string of fine saves when I first saw him on a rainy day. The pitch was heavy but it seemed almost impossible that we would score against him. Eventually a header by Ted Hemsley late in the game had him beaten. After that he continued to make brilliant saves and eventually when Sunderland got a meaningful attack at the Kop End, John Hope made a fine full length dive to flick away a shot by Bobby Kerr.

Two years later I was at my Uncle Pete's house (he had colour tv) watching the 1973 FA Cup final. Uncle Pete and I were cheering for Sunderland to beat L**ds. We cheered when Ian Porterfield (who became our manager 8 years later) scored the goal in the first half but the most memorable moment was Monty's legendary double save from a header by Trevor Cherry and a close range follow up by Peter Lorimer. Just after that Uncle Pete and I looked at each other open mouthed as we found it hard to believe what had happened! During the 1976-77 season one afternoon at my boarding school after a games lesson, a Sunderland fan called Mark (his grandfather was a director at Sunderland AFC) was telling me that Jim Mongomery was going to pop in our school to pay him a visit after attending a meeting down south. I dont think he wanted some fuss from the pupils but word had gone round that Mark was showing Jim round the school, the pupils gathered quickly with their pen and paper. Mark looked at me as if he thought I had been a big mouth but Jim was happy to sign every autograph request and shaking hands with pupils. The head boy (who was the school's 1st team keeper at the time) refused to wash his hand for a week!

19/2/1971

My dad picked me up in his car from the Cubs hut at Dronfield Hilltop, I got in the back seat because my 4 year old sister was sat on the front seat. My dad asked my sister to let me know that his Auntie Florrie (I used to visit her often in Unstone) passed away, after seconds of sadness in silence, my dad then broke the silence asking my sister to let me know that Colin Todd had left Sunderland to sign for Derby County. It was a boost for the Blades as our opponents in the next day would be without their star defender.

I loved that comment of Cloughie's when some reporter asked if Todd was taking over from Mackay and Cloughie said .." No- he;s not good enough yet." !!!
