Just do not understand how this was given. Ref seemed like he whistle in his mouth before Stevens even made the challenge. Player who went down didn't shout for a pen.

And the ref was the same prick who didn't give the Scougall Sumo throw penalty.

It did seem like the ref blew for it before he even did anything.

Deadbat says penalty. He reminds me of the ref (even though he was a father of a player from a club you played for in the mid 2000s) that always gives decisions to the opponents.

Odd then as VAR looked at it too and were happy it was a trip? Not saying they get everything right and clearly are making errors but not sure the decision was that controversial was it? Soft but it was not going to be overturned until the offside. Just crap defending really. Stevens didnt see his man and hung his leg out.

Watch again on the replays and the way Stevens goes to kick it, the ball goes the other way from Dawson getting to it first.

Most of those I spoke to agreed. One of those that if they dont give would VAR overrule? Probably not but once given if theres contact equally they would not overturn.

Mattered little...we gave them a much clearer one soon after!

This should have been a red card too. There was no play on the ball and was clumsy and cynical. So we got away with that maybe?

I was much angrier with our players mistakes last night than any officiating. Nothing affected the game from them in terms of the result.

Stevens got to the ball first and at the same time Dawson kicked at Stevens foot causing the ball to go the other way
Look again!

I looked earlier and still thought it was a pen. You didnt. You might be right. I might be. The ref and VAR officials looked and thought it was a penalty so shared my opinion. They had a lot more replays than you and I probably.

In the grand scheme of things it does not matter. We gave them another one and we had the biggest decision go for us when Basham should have been sent off for a cynical and crude foul.

Remonstrating about a decision (in the end that was not given) in a game we were well beaten and the officials had no bearing on is academic isn't it?

Lingard was the last man but he had lost control of the low cross so that might be why the ref thought Lingard had missed an easy chance before being clattered by Basham? I did fear a red card too.

Possibly but it was cynical and no way was he going for the ball. Whatever arguments about the first pen...I think I would have been fuming if I was a West Ham fan. If that happens anywhere in the middle of the park it's a red for a high, wild and dangerous tackle. The fact he was the last man and clearly intended to do it...it was perplexing he was not sent off.

I do think Stevens got the ball first but you have to ask why was he putting a tackle in there when the player was chasing a ball that was going away from goal?

Basham actually gets a slight touch on the ball if you watch it again

Academic. It wasn't a pen because VAR said so (offside)

Second one was because ref said so (VAR was never going to over-rule)

Pointless claiming the ref was wrong when his decision, unless over-turned at the time, is legally correct whether you agree or otherwise. No flailing of arms or gnashing of teeth is ever going to change it so just chill and accept football isn't ever going to be a game that pleases all sides on every decision. No point in venting outrage about it on here. Literally, no point.

Bash only gets yellow because he attempts a challenge, however half-arsed it looks. Double jeopardy rule. If you try to tackle and fuck it up a pen and a yellow is enough. If you just foul, red card

Fuck me. Are we splitting hairs over this?

We got beaten. Penalty or not, red card or not. We didn't play good enough to beat West Ham, because our team is full of misfits, has-beens, poor signings, sicknotes and is played in a system which is clearly (count 'em ... nineteen this season) easy to beat by however 'narrow margin' we care to whine about.

Carping about whether Enda got his clumsy feet on the ball or if Bash's last ditch clatter made up for Norwood's characteristic fuck up is neither here nor there.

The ref was a fat useless cunt and always has been but last night he was less useless than our players although still much fatter than all our players.

Did we have a similar challenge up the other end not given or even looked at or did i dream that fucker up?

Does anybody know the order in which VAR checks the penalties?

Did they check and confirm it was a penalty before going back to see if anybody was offside, or do they check the build up first?

On the penalty in question they were happy it was a foul, somehow, they then went back to see if there was an offside, which incidentally was the wrong frame in which the offside was being checked, it’s an utter farce.

The ref on the pitch (and the VAR official?) and the commentary team ref said that Basham HAD gone for the ball, therefore a yellow was the correct decision

yes, that is the exact point of the topic. we only lost that game because of the penalty decision.

Sorry ladies and gents, i wasted your time - i forgot that we can't have opinions or moan about diabolical refereeing decisions because we lost.
