I enjoyed the Dean Hammond interview on Price of Football yesterday. He’s trying to raise awareness about financial advisors taking advantage of footballers. That’s what you get when you put your financial well being in the hands of a jumped up car salesman/estate agent.

I enjoyed the Dean Hammond interview on Price of Football yesterday. He’s trying to raise awareness about financial advisors taking advantage of footballers. That’s what you get when you put your financial well being in the hands of a jumped up car salesman/estate agent.

Coming from a financial background myself I can safely say that if you rock up in a (possibly rented) Bentley and tell a 20 odd year old that you’ll look after their money, they’ll pretty much believe you. Sadly. I’ve often thought that maybe footballers should have a (still decent) capped cash wage with everything else put in to a trust/pension fund that is accessed post retirement. The reasoning being that they can still live the highlife that you would expect in their position but perhaps levelling out the lifestyle and releasing the accumulated money when they are a tad more mature (also protecting from ‘advisors’). It might also make career decisions a bit more about the football as they won’t necessarily see beyond the fixed cash if you see what I mean.

The advice to any player earning over £10k a week should be to live on a tenth of their take home pay & invest/save the rest (sensible stuff). Start thy purse to fattening and aim to be the richest man in Babylon.

Gary Cahill got taken for over £1M by such a conman “financial adviser” who lived in our village and might be a blade, his son certainly is. He’s now doing an 8 year stretch with parole dependant on him paying the money back (hint, I think he spent it).
