Berge's recovery

I agree, I’d rather have him here.

The only one who we’ll be able to sell is McBurnie as Brewster has done bugger all. Personally I wouldn’t be averse to that happening. I’m pretty sure you’d drive him to Outer Mongolia if required?!!
Outer Space be better 😉.

Utter garbage he's a poor fit to how we play, he'll be great in either the holding role or RCM. When he played this season he was our best midfielder and will be even better with those around him in improved form.

Much like the 'Wilders lost it' crowd a vocal minority rather than the prevailing opinion.

A midfield of Berge, Norwood (yes! he's done it before at that level) and Fleck would be brilliant and teams in that division would be frightened stiff of what all three can do and would consequently drop back deep into defence.

The question is can we keep them and do they have clauses to allow them to leave (at the appropriate price).

We have loads of forward options that would cause havoc to Championship teams - but some will be out of the door for financial reasons.

The main issue is who is sold and who stays as B'Mouth and Norwich have had to do with a few sales.

..............anyway - fuck it - we're on a roll now and in few games Newcastle and Brighton could be shitting bricks - plenty of mileage left in our Premier League days yet.

Sadly I don't think we'll see him many more times for the Blades. I've said before that he'll be a luxury we can't afford next season with the amount we've spent on Brewster and McBurnie and the reduced revenue he'll need moving on, probably at a loss.
Why would we move him on at a loss.?
Surely if he can make a difference we would keep him .If someone came in and we got more or les what we paid and of course he wanted to go then that's different.

Depending on the size of the loss it might make more financial sense to take a hit. He’ll be costing us around £5m per year in wages and amortisation I’d estimate so might be cheaper to get shut.

No way should we sell him at a loss, surely with the parachute money and relegation clauses we can afford to keep him

Parachute money, relegation clauses, lower wage bill than several in the Championship, not oversent this season, young squad coming through.
Yeah, I agree and don't understand where the need to sell is coming from.

It is possible, likely even, that there is a clause in his contract that allows him to leave if we are relegated and a bid of x pounds comes in. It could be out of our hands.

For me Sander (if he stays) plays the Norwood role next season. That was the role that he was taken on and is a natural fit. Norwood is a more than an adequate understudy.

Imagine the youthful starting 11 we could have next season in Ramsdale, Bogle, Lowe, Berge, McB, Brewster, RND and Slater.

It depends on who else we move on I reckon and what it costs to replace them.

Our wage bill is estimated at £50-£60m at the moment, if we assume that this drops to around £30m with relegation clauses. Plus the amortisation of the fees we've paid in the PL of around £20m (Berge, Brewster, McBurnie, Ramsdale, Mousset, Freeman, Bogle/Lowe, Burke etc). Plus the mortgage payments we need to make on that agreement. There are the matchday running costs to consider as well.

Our turnover will be vastly down on this season. £45m in parachute payments plus around £20m of additional revenue (this is a guess based on previous years), in the revenue there will be a period of empty grounds, plus the 4 free games that all season ticket holders are owed, plus probably a period of lower capacity as we ramp back up.

I don't see their being much (if anything) left when all the other running costs are taken into consideration. Unless the Prince is willing to fund the losses himself then the money will need to come from somewhere, player sales being the obvious answer.

That's entirely possible, but that wouldn't be a need to sell, just something we couldn't prevent and you'd think it would be for a sizable fee.

1. Sunk costs fallacy

2. Ongoing salary

I'm interested in this thread as although I think he's a decent player he's made very little impact and it's undeniable that our best football was played before he arrived (I'm not saying he's the reason for that).

Since he suffered that injury I don't remember anyone saying, following one of our defeats, "if only we'd had Sander Berge today".

It seems this lad gets better the more he doesn't play.

I know a lot of people on here are happy to recoup the fee we paid for him. Personally I hope we can convince him to stay another season.

A fully fit Sander Berge is far too good for the Championship and having him in the team gives us a stronger shot at promotion.

Absolutely, but our fans are unable to think about progress and keeping good players.
They've got a price of £12 -£15 million in their minds and can't wait to see us cut our losses of £8 - £10 million rather than risk keeping him and have to pay him.
The various boardrooms have done a magnificent job on them.

What caught my eye with Berge before we bought him was his ability to pick the ball up in midfield, side step a challenge and then motor towards the opponents penalty area, then laying off a pass when he drew the challenges. This seems his more natural position to me because it's what he was doing before he arrived here and got stuck in the deep Norwood role or switched to the right to take Lundstrams role.
We should just take the shackles off him and let him go

The amortisation won’t affect our revenue or expenditure. Deferred payments will, if we have to make any but amortisation is just depreciation and is sometimes purely theoretical. For example if Brewster scored 20 by Christmas his value would probably increase rather than depreciate.

You would hope it would be for a sizeable fee, yes, but if it was a clause needed to entice him to sign then it might not be as high as it should be. The £4m (IIRC) relegation clause in Jag's contract was peanuts for Everton and left us looking a bit stupid.

You can only imagine the contract negotiations that went around that deal.

McCabe - Here ya are Phil, here's you new contract as a reward for getting us promoted.
Jagielka - F@cking 'ell Kev ya tight arse, what the f@ck is that
McCabe - Ok Phil, here's a few quid more, and if another Prem club comes in for thee we'll put a relegation clause in so that tha can piss off earn a few quid.
Jagielka - But I'm a young lad totally unproven in the Prem, what if nobody comes in for me, I'm stuck with this shit.
McCabe - Tell thee what, we'll set it so low that somebodys bound to come in, hows £4 million sound?
Jagielka - Well that's about going rate for a Championship centre half Kev, are you sure ?
McCabe - Exactly, somebody's bound to tek a chance on thee for that price
Jagielka - Ok, deal done........anyway can we get this sorted I've got basketball practice wi me mates

£4.9m in amortisation alone (£22m/4.5years) so closer to £7.5m by the time wages and NI is factored in (working on £40k/week salary).

Nice little scar Sander but I can beat you mate hands down, mind you I'm shit at football.

Bloody hell, that's a hell of a scar. Whatever happened to keyhole surgery? I've seen beheadings leave a smaller mark....

Presumably the one’s you’ve seen were carried out by Crab Swift Departures Ltd .

This is one of the few subsidiaries of that vast conglomerate which has level of expertise second to none , thanks to the knowledge and experience of it’s General Manager , Vernon .

I can assure you that not all organisations in the beheading industry are as efficient as the aforementioned and that it can be a very messy affair .

it is a possibility but surely got to be no less than 20m so would depend on whether a premier league club is prepared to pay that

I’d be more worried if there is a clause if it stays active throughout the season. If it’s only the summer window I’d be quite comfortable no one would come in.
January when we’re doing well then £20M isn’t a gamble for a PL team.

yes although he will probably go i really hope he stays he would be immense for us in the championship

I swore blind Ismaila Sarr would be out of Watford for £40m when they got relegated but almost 2 full windows later, he's still there, so you never know.

Other clubs will want to see him fit, in form and no reccurrence of the injury before they would be interested.
We have had a bad spate of injuries to key players in the first half of the season.
Perhaps some of the clubs above will have an injury crisis of their own in the second half.
