Borbokis

Vas was brilliant and we had a really good team in 1997/98 Vas , Paul McGrath, Jan agar, Dean Saunders and Deano . Howard Kendal was the manager , when that team was broken up it was like a stake going through my heart
Kendall left that summer. Spackman was the manager at the beginning of the 97/98 season, followed by Thompson.

Same here. I was 7 when he came in and he immediately stood out. I suppose at that age, the flair players are the ones who get your interest. I've little recollection of Nicky Marker, for example.
Completely get why Borbokis caught your (young) imagination S64.... a bit like Sabella caught mine....

But your mention of Nicky Marker stirred my memory.... he was such a solid pro in a really good Blades team at that time. Nowt flash about him... but reliable as f*ck every game. Unsung hero in my opinion....

Hi, Stegosaurus here,

Im always surprised at how Borbokis and Quinn careers plummeted since leaving Blades.

I thought all both looked great. But went on to do nothing, Vas played a fair bit in Greece to be fair.

Tebily too I yhought would have a better career than he had

Marker was decent for us.

More infamous these days for his ‘tackle’ on Ben Thornley, who was rated to be better than Giggs Beckham and Scholes

Not sure a plea of ‘I went for the ball’ would work in this one!

I was sat in a boozer on London Rd after the Sunderland game ,I was in a dreamworld I was convinced we were going to rule the world

One of my first idols at Bramall Lane. Must have only been about 9 at the time but absolutely adored the bloke. I was wondering the other night, was he as good as he was in my head or was it just my young infatuation ?

Perrozzi we'll be about the same age then mate, and your recollections resonate with me. I think back to this side and they weren't just mere men (as footballers are now) they appeared like heroes, giants of men, superstars. Such is the impression your childhood heroes can have.

This side had loads, Borbokis, Quinn, Deane, Kelly, Tracey, Holdsworth, Whitehouse, Fjortoft.

This side should have gone up, it was absolutely superb, the best side that never was. We were robbed of it, by the board's lack of ambition.

Come to think of it, I've always liked attacking wing backs the most, ever since. Roberto Carlos, the Kyles, now Enda and George...

The Sunderland debut wasn’t a free kick but it was still a quality goal - enjoy:

I remember that Marker wasn't everyone's favourite when in midfield, but when he changed to playing at the back in the 3 it was a good move.
A super side to watch with skill, combative players in midfield and forwards who were very different.

I also absolutely f*cking loved that team.
Think in the last Kendall season they had a poster of a different player in each match day programme, as a 7 year old I had them all up on my bedroom wall. All my mates supported ‘bigger’ premier league teams and if they came round to my house I d always take great pleasure explaining to them who the likes of Petr Katchouro, Borbokis, Wayne Quinn, Mitch Ward etc were. (I don’t think they cared...)
Of course, Dane Whitehouse was my absolute favourite back then and still in my all time top 3 favourite Blade players.

I think we were the last unbeaten team in the country that season. We looked unstoppable.
In true Blades fashion we fucked it up. Players sold, Spackman walked. I'm convinced we would've pissed the league that season.
If I remember correctly we were beaten at home on a Tuesday night on the day Deano was sold??? Or was it the night Spackman walked?
McGrath, what a fuckin player! Katchuro reminds me of Moose. Bags of talent but no discipline to get fit.

Hi, a proper Blade here.

Tebily did okay and at least never lowered his standards, to slum it at S6.

Spackman did a great job initially, I’m surprised he never achieved anything afterwards. Perhaps the experience with us was to blame.
