Can anyone remember what this season's wage budget is? and what next season's is going to be?

I'm sure Trevor Birch mentioned it in the summer or Chubby Seth said something about it earlier this season.

Off the top of my head, I think they said it is £10M this season.....reducing to £8M next season. If anyone else knows otherwise please correct me by all means.

"Under control" when they want to tell us how well we're run, "Too high" when there's a fans forum;)

After doing a spot of searching the current permanent squad contract lengths are as follows.

Simmo - 2012
Wright - 2011
Taylor - 2012 Assumed
France - 2011
Jordan - 2011

Morgan - 2013
Quinn - 2013
Monty - 2013
Yeates - 2012
Ward - 2012
Willo - 2012 Assumed
Britton - 2013
Hendo - 2012
Evans - 2013
Bogdanovic - 2013 Assumed
Ertl - 2012
Creswell - 2013
Kozluk - 2011
Lowton - 2012

Kozluk, France, Jordan and Wright all expire this summer which probably saves the club about £10,000 a week or £520,000 a year thats assuming that each of them is on £2,500 a week.

Only another £1,480,000 to go!

It has been mentioned on here in the past that france is on seven grand a week. I would be surprised if the other 3 are not paid similar amounts.

£7,000 a week?

Had Blackwell & Birch been for an extended liquid lunch that day?

As I've mentioned before, Wright's situation is a crazy one. His contract is/was due to expire this month, so it would have been an ideal opportunity to get a highly-paid, injury-prone, non-playing squad player off the books and increase the budget available to the new manager. Instead, the Directors (Birch?) ploughed ahead and offered him a contract until the end of the season, despite not knowing whether the next manager (Adams) would want to retain him or not.

It's still not clear whether Wright did actually sign the contract extention but if not, I would like to see Adams given the option of choosing his own young, hungry keeper to compete with and put pressure on Simonsen.

I suspect Britton (on around 10k a week?) to go for before the end of the window and Henderson (10k a week) before the start of next season. That's a million for you. I also suspect Taylor, Boggy and Squinny will leave (if we can find someone who'll take them) at the end of the season. That would get us below 8m ..... though it doesn't take into account new players.

Let's trust Micky to bring in 5 or 6 replacements on less money that will do at least as good a job. That was always Warnock's best feature, keeping United in the top 8 on a smaller wage budget than our competitors.

Hendo was signed before the wage bill was being cut and I think will be on a lot more than 10K
It is also worth considering that Britton was highly sort after by Wigan and choose us so I think you might have under estimated that one too.

If Nosworthy goes back (although I think we've probably agreed to sign him), that should take another £500-750k a year off. No idea what Bartley will be on - £5k a week? I'd love him to stay for another season but can't see it.

Blackwell gave Henderson a 4 year contract.

Thanks for that Kev.

Nos is out of contract in the summer but is still on Sunderlands books. The only time we could offer him a permission deal officially is between now and the summer.

As Olle says, Britton (10k p/w????) will do and I expect Hendo (more like 15k p/w from what I've heard) will be sold in the summer to clear the decks as well. If they can get anything for Ched I expect he'll be off in the summer too (we cant afford a rumoured 20k a week for one player).

Wright, Kozluk, France and Jordan.....I think more like a combined 18k p/w between them (remember Jordan played for Man City and in the PL for Burnley).

So in total:-

18k p/w for the four out of contract
+ 10k p/w for Britton
+ 15k p/w for Hendo
+ 20k p/w for Ched
= 63k p/w.....or in annual terms.....£3.27M (call it 3.2) off the wage budget.

If my maths is right, that would take our wage bill down to about £6.8M - so £1.2M for MA to play with????

I am of course purely speculating on these figures and may be way off.

Thing is though from a skeptical view if MA got the wage bill down to £6.8m, Birch would would say "well done Micky, now if you shave another £800,000 off you can have that for your own signings."

Given that Blackpool are current running a £10K/week I think cutting back from Blackies £15K is a sensible move.

Problem is Monty, Quinn, Hendo, Morgan, Ched, Britton, Bogdanovic, Creswell and Williamson are never going to accept new contracts under £10,000 and theres a quite a chunk of the squad to off load and replace in the 3 off season months.

That is the Blades way Worksop :D

Although they would probably promise him that meaning that is to cover fee and wages! Dont worry.....I'm as skeptical as you.

I agree, the club does have to be run within its means and as long as I'm seeing progress on the pitch I dont care how much we're spending to do it. I do think though, that anything less than £8M a year for wages would make things very difficult for us.

Say you had a squad of....I dont know....24 players (to cover each position and an extra one or two).....

With an £8M a year budget you're looking at an average wage of around £6,400 p/w (most decent Championship players must be on that). I would say to compete at the top of the division regularly you need at least a £10M budget (average £8,000 p/w in the same size squad). Fair enough if we cant run at those costs we cant and we just have to be a bit clever with recruitment instead but £8M has to be the absolute bottom figure for a club wanting to challenge for promotion surely?!

I would agree and I don't think we are looking to do that this season but I would expect most of those to be offer lesser deals when they re-new or looked to be moved on in the short-medium term.

Couple of points we are heading towards a first team squad of 15-16 with the rest made up of development squad players. I would suggest that these lads will be on no more than 1K a week tops initially. So that would help your average.
Also these Birches comments are based on deflated numbers through the turnstyles if they can increase that the wage bill can move in the same direction.

That suggests thta it may take a few seasons for Adams to get the wage bill down and make us competitive.

The one's in bold I think we'll be able to shift. If we are willing to let Britton go for free, then we may also let these guys (who could arguably fetch a fee - but are on big money) go for nowt too.

Does anyone know how our current wage budget and the planned future budget compares to the other clubs in our division. I know that Birch previosly claimed that our budget was highly competitive but we seem to have regularly missed out on players to our championship rivals.

As a guess, I'd say we were currently just below mid-table in the wages league. Better than our league position but is that really unsustainable for a club of our size?
