If the owners want us to compete at this level, they need to find investment so we can up our wages to attract better players. If they can’t do that, they need to sell to someone who can. That not to say I blame them completely for what’s happened but it’s a stark realisation as to where we are and what we need to do to be ok at this level. We can’t compete with Brighton, that says it all to me.

Agree. If the owner can't afford the salaries and the managers tactics are beyond reproach and the players don't have enough quality then I wonder why we tried to get promoted to the PL in the first place.

You've got to have the money in the bank to break the bank. Our owners don't.
So, they are spending what we get from premier League money.
It's around £100m a year. So, if we had a solid squad, we could pay average prem wages of £50k a week to 20 players (comes to £60m) , then spend about £40m a season on new signings.

But, if you want to build that squad, because you don't have one, then you are making up the difference out of your own pocket. If you don't have it, then there are two options. One is don't spend it. The second is put it as club debt.

We have an owner who doesn't have a shed load of money, but he is willing to spend all the prem money..so any other spending would be club debts. That could be paid if we stop up, or shaft us long term if we go down. Got to pick one or the other. Or get a billionaire owner.

Probably why Norwich decided to take the cash and come back down to the Championship. It's a rich boys club in the prem.
Probably the truth is, if you don't have the cash immediately, is to bounce in and out of the prem over several seasons and steadily build a squad good enough, by using the prem money followed by parachute payments.

Doing it in one hit from L1 without big money backing might not actually be feasible.

Even if we signed all of them they would still be part of the 5 on the wing crossing to the 1 outnumbered striker in the middle, lose possession and suffer the counter attack.
 
The owners should take blame for not sacking Wilder at least 7 games since.
Its fairly obvious he lost the dressing room after his comments away at Leicester last season.
& his obsession with picking Lundstram will return next match now his 3 game ban is up.
We owe Wilder nothing at all,get rid of him.
 
Yes, they are partly to blame.

Wilder has to shoulder some of the blame for prioritising the wrong positions and failing to strengthen midfield/replace JoC. The board must take the blame for not sanctioning the wages to get players at PL level. There was obviously some money there (Brewster, Rammers fees) but the overall transfer strategy of fees on youth rather than wages and having one eye on the Championship (if relegated) has failed.

What really irked me was our inability to not even pick off a few of the better Championship players on the back of a higher standing after surviving our first PL season in style. The board were stupid if they thought we'd kick on paying wages which could only attract the likes of Ollie Burke and Max Lowe.

Watkins would score no more goals in this team than Brewster.He would be stood at top of the pitch bored shitless.Not getting constant top service from attacking midfielders like grealish and Barkley .And cash would most likely be playing second fiddle to baldock like bogle does.

At least you'll still have a team to support next season. Spending beyond our means doesn't guarantee success and could easily have ended with us going out of business. We don't have billionaire owners. Learn to live with it.

What! McCabe came in when the club was struggling with him owning the club we went all the way back to the premier league he pumped his own money in it always makes me laugh when people come on and blame him the honeymoon period is over we have new owners now it's up to them if your recruitment is at best amateurish this is what you get Paul Mitchell what has he done.... a couple of players for Chesterfield,Bettis who did he play for people in recruitment who don't want to upset the manager by telling him he's wrong please the recruitment should be experienced ex Sheffield United players who have been there and done it not yes men it's a shambles

I'd argue that's exactly what we did last season, went toe to toe, almost qualified for Europe, with one of the smallest, if not the smallest,wage budgets.

Problem is, tactically we havent evolved. We have been worked out, with no plan b.

Be careful what we wish for because at the moment we have absent landlords but he did say he prefers to watch our games on TV.....do me a favour this is happening on his watch sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate getting relegated and losing the Premier League money is going to hurt more than paying experienced forwards premier league money

I’m under no illusions that we are in a precarious position financially and that the prince has signed off club money rather than ponying up much of his own in the grand scheme of things. McCabe did a job at a time when no one else was forthcoming, we’ve moved on since then and gone forwards a long way as a result.

Yes it was. Obviously unless you're happy to be the next Huddersfield, Stoke, Bradford, Bolton, Sunderland to drop out of the prem with ridiculous contracts to average players, and never be seen again.
 
Some of our fans should hang their heads in shame. Paying players £50K a week wages means if you’re relegated you face serious financial trouble.
I reckon some of our fans want us to play in the PL othewise they aren’t bothered...
I’d rather have a club and would continue to attend most home matches even if we were in league 2.

Regards ambition from the owner. Many said “there’s no way we’ll buy McBurnie....we don’t have the ambition“
In fact many predicted we‘d spend 10 mil on players max....not the 20million that we’ve managed 3 times....we’ve spent an incredible 100 million in 18 months.
I remember many saying “there’s no way we’ll persuade Berge to come here when Napoli and Liverpool want him”
I also remember the ”there’s no way we’ll buy Brewster...if it’s 25 mil or 30mil...just pay it and pay him whatever wage he wants because he’s the new Michael Owen”

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I’m predicting McBurnie, Berge and Brewster could be sold next year for...let’s say 15 million each. Then 2 or 3 years later when they are star players in the PL....many of our fans will be saying “why didn’t we keep them”, “we never learn selling players on the cheap”

Remember last year when everyone was raving about Fleck saying he’s worth at least 30 mil and we should pay whatever he wants otherwise he’ll leave.
In fact a few said we won’t have the ambition to keep “a top player” like Fleck.
Some said “Wilder is a future England manager`’ and we need to give him a 6 year contract otherwise he’ll leave when Arsenal or Everton come calling.

Its all about keeping a sense of proportion and perspective through good times and bad times,

You’re right we did and we certainly don’t have an effective plan b or plan a right now. It also looks to me as if a significant portion of that side that took us up the leagues has just gassed out at this point aswell.

Ah, a fortune teller!
 



1) Relegation pay cut clauses.
2) Offloading players in the event of relegation.
3) The hundred million quid that the bottom team in the Premier League gets.
4) The parachute payments.

These four things together mean that it would have been less of a risk to increase our wage ceiling than some have suggested.

I wonder if other teams have these ridiculous binary arguments within their fanbase, whereby anyone suggesting that something should be done differently is presented with an argument that shows the extreme opposite of what they’re suggesting?

It’s like the only alternative to Wilder is Sam Allardyce, the only alternative to McCabe was Chansiri, the only alternative to paying a (relative) pittance in wages is to set fire to fifty pound notes and watch the club do a Pompey.

The other way isn’t always the poor opposite. Use your imagination, maybe.
