Pretty typical swings and roundabouts display for me. If anything it reinforced my assertion that Chris Basham is great as a defender, but far more valuable to the team in midfield. But there were a lot more confirming aspects about that game that were minuses as well.

Overall though, the 5-3-2 continued to be shakey throughout the first phase of the game. I don't get how Wilder doesn't see that oppositions have every solution to this formation now. Pack the midfield and stifle the wingplay. Force us to go direct, because we have no method of feeding the channels or moving the ball up the pitch through the middle. If anyone thinks that last season's midfield three of Fleck - Norwood - Lundstram has anything to give SUFC now I beg for your working out. We looked far more capable when Lundstram the Liability was redded and Wilder went firstly 3-4-2 then in the second half 4-4-1. Get that - with ten men, our game improved. Odd, isn't it? Fleck's substitution and Lundstram's tackle came from us being totally overrun in the middle of the park, and us retreating into that 'defend, expecting them to score' mentality we have seen so much of this (and at the end of the last) season. Again, with the three in the middle, the gap between McGoldrick and then Brewster is vast and there's no pressure for their defence and possession is just weakly given away. That is how we are playing and that is why we are losing. Again, Brighton concentrated a lot on the Stevens-Robinson axis and very much nearly succeeded, save for some great work from Basham. When Fleck went off and we gained Burke, the effect was instant, and the free kick Didsy hit was the sort we've wanted all season. At least he made their keeper work for the save. Burke again alters our aspect entirely and must start against Everton. Brewster also needs to take note from Burke as to what tireless, relentless and 100% determination looks like. We got our well deserved goal playing 4-4-1 and Burke's industry was instrumental in it.

Okay, we made the big fat mistake late on with Osborn giving a pointless free kick away and tell me - is there any Blades fan who watched them line up for that who didn't believe it would be a turning point for us? It was writ large in stone that that foul would give them the opportunity to equalise, which they did. Billy Smart's defending again which screams for the composure and assurance of Jack in that penalty area which doesn't result in the prolific Welbeck to do what he has always done with a loose ball from four yards. Had that fallen to Burke however, it would have cleared the fucking Amex Stand and landed down on the seafront.

Ramsdale 6.5/10: Thought he pulled off some decent saves including the two low down. He is still nervy and a bit uncoordinated though.
Baldock 6/10: Had a torrid time with his flank even as a five across the back. Came narrower at four but still did well, and his last gasp stop at the end was very pleasing
Basham 8/10: Had a great game, better in midfield of course. Found myself saying, 'Well in Bash!' so many times as he did his usual thing of getting in the way of much of what Brighton tried to do, be it high, medium or low. And - did his usual deft flicks and take throughs which simply baffles oppositions. Christ knows what we'll do if he's suspended or injured.
Egan 7/10: Again, spreading himself across to cover for Robinson at times (especially at 4-4-1) but still, this was a better game for him. A lot of what they put into the box in his zone was rebuffed and he did well to frustrate the threat of Maupay and Connolly
Robinson 5/10: A better game from him but far from what we need in that position. He still plays like a robot, he's very one-speed and at times over-methodical and predictable. Attackers can read him easily, which is why he isn't really PL standard
Stevens 6/10: Another better game for him, even if at times flat footed and exposed. I don't know if his collapse in form is two parts confidence and one part 'no Jack O'Connell' on his right hand side. They tried a few excursions up that flank but it's a bit broken.
Lundstram 1/10: Shit tackle. Up to then had compounded our efforts playing his usual 'play where I want, me' crap. Suspended now and needs shipping out in January.
Ampadu 6.5/10: A lot better game from him. Seemed to want to get stuck in early and 'impose', which is something we haven't seen recently without Lundstram putting his foot through the ball and getting redded.
Fleck 2/10: Now looks totally lost and a shadow of his former self. Another one for shipping out, maybe? He's never going to get any better and will never be the player we once knew andloved at LCM
McGoldrick 7.5/10: His usual cavalier self, swashbuckling andcreating nuisance as much as his tired old legs will take him, as well as digging the ball out and carrying it. He's a number ten, Wilder. Play him there, FFS
Brewster 4/10: I am starting to doubt this last is anywhere near at the standard for PL. Liverpool have had our kecks down

Burke 6.5/10: Tremendous effort but loses a whole point and a half for his missed effort. That shot, back of the net, would have killed Brighton dead and we then have four points and a win. Just think about what that would have done to the team and the fanbase (and Wilder) into this short - in many cases (including mine in Tier 4) miserable Christmas Break?
Bogle 7/10: Really impressive debut and a wonderfully well taken goal.
Osborn 5/10: Put in a good shift and was a decent axis for the long ball out to Burke. But that foul? Lose a whole point because of what it cost us. It was pointless

Wilder 5/10: Gets that for starting with that 5-3-2 and ending with the 4-4-1, and something of a team stripped of all his major signings, looking broadly capable and digging out blind to get the point. He needs to think very, very carefully how he lines us up against Everton, because they have a midfield very agile and very skilful which will will bulldoze a three man outfit flat and force us into that predictable, beatable and embattled five with the three midfielders watching them pass it round and through them and the front two sat playing draughts with their central defenders.

Do I need to read before I agree?
Probably not, but out of respect for your opinion I will today 😉

Edit: pretty much agree with your review, although a couple of high marks from what I would have scored. 9/10 😉

For the first 10 minutes I was thinking ..... ok we're nowt special, but neither are they and we at least look like we are in the game. Then we seemed to give them an extra half a yard on the ball and opportunities to play through us. I thought, oh fuck here we go again, sit back and watch them play until the inevitable goal goes in. Fleck during this period was totally non existent - and that pass from the freekick by Robinson to him..... omg, the lad wasn't just half asleep, he was fully horizontal knocking out the ZZZZZs.

The introduction of Burke made a big difference, and I started to believe again. Then fucking dopey twat Lundstram..... grrrrrrrr, say no more.

As is often the case I agree with much of what you say but Ampadu , really ?

He did the odd decent thing first half but after that was totally anonymous and spent most of the time ball watching and giving acres of space to players he should have been marking .

A thoroughly Thirwellesque performance both for me and the bloke I watched it with , who noticed exactly the same deficiencies in his game . 3/10 max .

Your opion Pommpey thank god you’re not employed in Football!!

If he hadn’t “missed the cross” he scores
Completely put him off
You have a problem with ramsdale, I notice you tend to jump on him very quickly

I said he played well today and credit to him after a bad week prior to it. That was appalling goalkeeping though. Not sure he put him off intentionally. He just missed the cross completely. It was a bad mistake. Thats not me jumping on him and that's not me looking to criticise him and I don't have a problem with him. I call it how I see it. He was fine the rest of his game today.

He's had a poor season as have most of the team. He has been left exposed a lot of the season but equally has made mistakes almost every game and many costly. Today was a better day as I said in my report.

For a tram down to ten due to a tacle no man utd or liverpool would ever in a million years get sent off for was as good as we could have expected
.
Again an open goal miss when 1 up gets punished by a ball falling veryv kindly for the opposiition

I would have given Lundstam a far better mark than the one Fleck was given, at least he did put a few tackles in. Still if he had jumped out of that challenge he would have been slated for being nesh, he can't really win whatever he does but it is hopefully his last game for us. Fleck absolutely shocking looks to be on a different planet, also I don't get what people see in Ampadu who is hardly much better than Norwood he can't tackle is weak and outmuscled time after time the kid will never make it at Chelsea or any other top club.
Brighton were much better than we were ............................................ that is if we are talking diving and rolling about screaming or intimidating a weak referee.

Until we start playing Brewster properly and actually create a chance for the guy then it’s hard to rate him. We spent the first 25 minutes hoofing long balls up to him. I felt we were just starting to play properly, when Lundstram decided that he wanted to make sure that he had Christmas off.
Wilder then made the correct decision to have Burke as the lone striker, as he had the pace.
Brewster has a very good touch, he is an intelligent footballer and has proved that, when given chances, he will score goals, he won’t though, while we don’t get him anywhere near the opposition penalty box

I doubt that any team in any of Europe's top five leagues would have a midfield weaker than Lundstram, Ampadu and Fleck. I don't blame players for being not good enough and Fleck's total loss of form is awful to see.

Lundstram isn't a PL standard footballer, his early performances last season can now be seen to have been a flash in the pan from having the lungs to get from one end of the pitch to the other, but he's become little more than nuisance value and today the nuisance was to us.

I have no idea about Ampadu's qualities, maybe he needs to play in a better side because he doesn't provide enough drive or offer enough protection to the defence for a side in our position.

The problem is that the alternatives are really no better. Did anyone look at that game and say to themselves, "what we really needed today was Sander Berge"? And he's theoretically our best option.

Care to substantiate that comment and give your take on it, as most have in this thread? It comes across a lot better than what you've put, that's all.

There’s loads but dismissing Lunny Norwood & Fleck as a midfield, which 3 have done better? Would love to hear!!

Spot on Pommpey ! A remarkably accurate breakdown where we are at this present time. The powers that should read this ,we are really broken.
All though I support Wilder! Just where is Jack Rodwell cant even get in a depleted matchday 20 that surely is embarrassing to him and Wilder.

Young Bogle managed to get himself into a scoring position, keep his head in front of goal, and actually score. Might have been a deflection to help it on but his first and second touches were good and he kept his nerve.

If there's loads, let's hear it.

For what it's worth, that three have been misfiring since the lockdown lifted. As the three they don't collectively have the skillsets to control the game in midfield, retain possession, push up the pitch without cracking it long, or effectively support the attack. I'd be interested to see any examples of games where they have played where we have completely dominated the centre of the park. This isn't last season, or the season before, so all of us need to pull our heads out of our arses in terms of today and yesterday. Right now we need the midfield to do what midfields should do - look at Man United today vs Leeds. Lundstram is, and always has had his limitations (show beautifully today), Fleck is now a busted flush and Norwood is slowly starting to realise his Championship pedigree. Strange how with all three out of the side today we started to look a bit more purposeful - with ten men.

Like I say, let's see your evidence to counter that, rather than slavver about me being employed in football. If you know better, show us. I know one or two on here who do just that with the dignity and maturity deserved of adult debate.

3/10 max .
Agree totally and second half was blowing out of his arse

We are not going to get back the "amazing" trio of last year when we finished 9th. The sooner you realise the better. All 3 are finished. We need to move on. So do they.

If he hadn’t “missed the cross” he scores
Completely put him off
You have a problem with ramsdale, I notice you tend to jump on him very quickly
Eh? If he didn't "miss the cross", he either catches it or tips it away and Connolly never gets the opportunity to score. It was a mistake in an otherwise decent performance - I don't think Deadbat has an agenda against Ramsdale

Dont think the overlapping centrebacks is dead in the water ,it needs specialists to do it right apart from Bash & O'Connell we dont have the players who can play it well enough that is something we have to work on.
Really we need a plan B which we can play well enough to be effective whether that be variations of 3 at the back to various ways of playing with a back 4.
The element of surprise can upset any formation and method.
It's all about the intelligence of the place allied to nous.
