One big problem is that a lot of fans have been fooled by our great first season back in the top league. Most would have been more understanding if that hadn't happened & this was the first season I am sure, as it was expected & accepted that we would struggle. That we did so well was a tribute to the players, coaching & fitness staff and the forward momentum from climbing the leagues so quickly, & it was never going to continue ad infinitum, in fact for a lot of them it was their zenith.
Another thing is the amount of money spent in the last two seasons, as evidenced in all the "spunking £130 million so we should be brilliant" comments & posts. That is a huge red herring because the players we needed to kick on command much bigger fees & wages, which we certainly are not in a position to pay. Perhaps the way Norwich approached last season should have been the model for us, plus slowly & gradually adding a player or two of the right calibre, & paying such players the going rate. We have fallen between two stools really, & it is showing on the field of play.
I have been, & remain, behind Wilder & the club, but accept that today was a low point of the season & as the game went on I felt the belief & hope ebbing away from me. Something needs to happen clearly, & I really hope the current players & management can somehow pull themselves up, regroup & come out fighting, because if nothing changes on the pitch they will be made off it, & most sane Blades do not want that.

Fair enough, you didn't specifically say it was the owner's money.
I wish people wouldn't use Norwich as an example, though, they have embarked on a pretty unique strategy. The money that we've spent is a fair amount, but in context it's only one season's spending as we try to transform a league 1 team into a PL team. We're up against teams that have been building a PL squad for years, some forever. The idea that we can invest one tranche of dosh into the team and end up with a mid-table PL team is simply unrealistic.
Last year a lot of our players showed they had PL credentials and it was unfair to label them L1 or Championship players, this season those same players are doing the exact opposite. Sacking the manager won't help that. We have to face the reality that we have a team that needs to punch above its weight to stay in the PL.

What the fuck did people expect when we got promoted to the PL? This is what most people thought would happen last year - it's happening now and all this talk of supporting the club through thick and thin has gone out the window. The number of fans who only want to support the club when we're winning is shocking. It's where the term "self entitlement" comes from. Do people even know what support is?
"So we can't criticise the team" is the usual non sequitur. No, that's not what anyone's saying, learn what support is, understand the realities of the situation. This is the fight that we should have had but was kicked down the road. Mistakes have compounded the problem, we've now got a mountain to climb. So let's fire the one manager we've had in over a decade who has actually delivered for us?

You're right.

The players are the problem, most of them are not good enough to be in the Premier League but we can't afford to buy better.

Not their fault, just then way it is.

Most of our players aren't good enough for the Premier League and a change of manager won't change that.

Sad fact of life is that we don't have the money to eat at the top table, and changing the manager won't change that.

It's hard when you can only sign players that fit into the wage structure.

Transfer fees are usually paid in instalments but wages have to be paid at the month end (unless you're Sheffield Wednesday 😂 ) and have an immediate impact on cash flow.

Judging a manager on transfer fees is a misguided way of judging things, and let's face it, some clubs spend more than our total outlay on just one player, not half a squad as we have had to do.
 
I don't want the club to sack Wilder.

However, this stubborn persistence with 3-5-2 when we haven't got the players to operate it will become his undoing if he's not careful.

When people ask me about Wilders teams, I generally say:

1. We play on the front foot and go after teams;

2. We ALWAYS turn up.

Unfortunately, we are doing neither this season. We have become boring and predictable I'm afraid.

Really sorry to see, as I genuinely thought we would start to establish ourselves this season.

The results are worse, I don't necessarily agree that the team is.

It's all about fine margins.

A lot of things went our way last season that are going against us now and that either breeds or knocks confidence.

The psychology of the game can't be underestimated and can change quickly for all sorts of reasons that are not under the immediate control of the players and management.

It's very hard to change momentum when things are conspiring against you.
 
You could go on about it for hours in detail bottom line is we have little possession and we’re not good on the counter either so most games we spend in our own half trying not to concede like an FA cup tie when a lower league team plays a higher league team

I thought that today we looked exactly that - a League 1 (or even 2) side, thankful to be in the 3rd round, and looking to limit the damage and get a lucky break.
Except we didn't look that good.

Wilder is as good as we can get, and provided he hasn't completely lost his marbles (which is an extremely common and regular thing amongst men who take the Sheffield United job) he should be given the chance to find himself again, and have another go at promotion next year.

I said a few months ago that the real Chris Wilder better find his head and get back on it.

Skulking about, face like thunder, calling players championship and League One, it's no wonder they aren't playing for him.
 
If he took the shackles off the players we might see an improvement. Setting up to not lose the point we start the game with is crap ala Nigel Cloughesque tactics. Grab yourself by the balls Chris, give your head a wobble and let the players have a go at attacking teams again, if we lose so be it but at least we can say we had a good go. Stop with the hoof crap and get on the front foot from the get go again.
Last season you said were Sheffield United, we dont care who you are, we are a premier league team and were here to compete and not be star struck. Never once did i hear, were not good enough to go toe to toe, were not good enough, our players arent good enough, thats crap pal as they proved they can do it when the shackles come off.
 
Burnley have just scored, Fulham looked good against Liverpool so it just shows that the bottom teams can compete and go toe to toe with the big names if the players are alowed to.

Not sure I see the logic in this, to be honest.

Many of us thought there was a good chance we'd be relegated last season, it's true. But if you had said at the beginning of last season "not only will you go down, but you will break the record for lowest number of points, regress to ineffective long-ball tactics, score nothing but a handful of goals from open play, and go whole games without hardly a shot on target" would we all have just shrugged and accepted it? I'm not sure we would. I think we would've expected a bit more than that. And that's before we spent a pretty penny on improving the squad and before this group of players proved they are actually capable of holding their own at this level. We have the right to expect better of this team and this manager.

Fans on both sides of this debate are asking themselves the same question: what is best for the future of the club? If you think it's to keep Wilder in charge, that's fine--there are some very good reasons to believe that. But there are also some pretty strong arguments that the club's future might be better served by a change of course.

It's not his head he needs to find it's his bollocks.

Where's the "we'll always have a go" mentality gone?

I've said before on other threads that I got the switch to a flat 3 in MF at the start of last season as he probably thought we would be over run more than we were but as the season progressed we should have started playing with a "10" in quite a few of the games as teams were there to be attacked.

Unfortunately now our levels have dropped, we're stuck with this defensive approach and the consequences are there for all to see.
