........and analyse what has actually happened as far as SUFC are concerned since Speed left;

SUFC - Sorry to see Gary go, John Carver will take charge of team affairs for the immdeiate future. Later statement says no appointment until after Christmas and Carver expected to be in charge into the New Year.

That's it more or less, end of.

EVERYTHING else has come from Doncaster Rovers and in particular their Chairman John Ryan who has contradicted himself throughout. RYAN chose to say that he expected an approach from SUFC for SOD, RYAN chose to say that he expected SOD to stay and that SUFC would not give him time, that we might have a bigger fan base and ground but......etc, etc. RYAN then said he had given us permission to talk to SOD, (But we hadn't made an official approach?) and RYAN is now saying that he is delighted SOD is staying but it doesn't look as though we have even spoken to him?

All smoke and mirrors bollocks from the Keepmoat I'm afraid designed entirely by John Ryan to reassure himself that SOD is staying there for the long-haul.

I would be embarrassed if I was SOD and embarrassed if I was a Doncaster Rovers fan.

Well done Blades for maintaining a professional approach.

My thoughts exactly

Agreed here too. For once we have it spot on. Still time to make a Dogs Breakfast of it though. Watch this space :)

HOLD ON HOLD ON HOLD ON..... some posters think that we should have this outspoken approach like John Ryan. You know, telling the fans straight etc etc etc

Good post. It's not been a regular feature of the'blades way', maybe someone has been told about pride before a fall. I hope the only comment we get is the announcement of the new manager in January.

Hard to stress how much I disagree.

You miss out the bit where Birchy basically said - without naming names - that he wanted SOD but it would be tricky to get him. That raised people's hopes if you ask me - totally ridiculous statements from Birchy who is clueless when talking to the fans.

All Ryan thought is what we all did - ie they're after my manager - Ryan then said, quite rightly, that we are a shit, tin-pot outfit and why would he want to go there. So what if another Chairman speaks his mind?

Well done Torrix. You're absolutely spot on - in spite of a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth the only one's flailing around in the publicity department are Donny.

Initially my take was that JR was warming his fans up for disappointment in the New Year. Now it seems a little more than blind panic in an attempt to make it difficult for SOD to go - and ill founded at that given that he may not even be offered the job.

I think our PR policy has been about right - I'd love to know that we've got a new manager in and that he's got January to sort out his targets. If that isn't the case and we want time to make a decision - say nothing. We're not selling anything right now, so sales won't suffer. I doubt the changing room could give a shit - if reports are to be believed they are perfectly happy with Carver. The only place that positive spin would have any impact is on the message boards - and judging by the small number of repeat names on here and BM, then we might be a decent litmus test for initial opinion, but I doubt the influence spreads that far.

Disagree there,Mic....it was some fans on here and on other forums who put 2+2 together after hearing Birch's comments and assumed we were after SOD. He could have meant managers such as Howe,Scott,Adams,Clark etc...the point is that he wasn't that specific for fans to be able to narrow things down to one person.
Ryan has publicly been second guessing what move SUFC will make and he has been make to look foolish with his double talk and spin...something many on here have critisized our board for doing.

we might have interviewed SOD,Birch might have decided that he is not the right man for the club.....it's all speculation fuelled by John Ryan

Cheshire - Birch basically said we are after SOD. What do you expect Ryan to do - just lie down and roll over and have his tummy tickled? He's standing up for his club, for his fans and you call it 'flailing around in the publicity department.'

But why should Ryan give a stuff about SUFC? He's standing up for Donny. QUite righlty, he and his fans were/are worried about losing SOD.

Didn't Birchy also say he wanted Championship experience?

You're right, I do - he's managed to say something else at least once a day for the last week and a bit. If SOD is going, then turn him into the evil incarnate, if he's staying then big up your club. If you're not sure what he's doing, then make the decision to look like a wrong career move to reinforce what's being said in private. What we've had is a bit of all of them - suggesting that JR is good for a quote to any journo who can type his number correctly into a phone, and it depends on whether he's just had a coffee as to line he takes.

Birch didn't say he was after SOD...no names were mentioned.John Ryan has jumped the gun and now made all clubs looking for a manager know that SOD is available at a price...the cynic would say that maybe JR needs a bit of cashflow as he keeps mentioning compensation (if KM was doing this, many of our fans would be saying the same)

Yes Birch would prefer someone with championship experience (Carver has this.....no I would prefer us not to have him) but the improtant thing is that the Board select the right person. If after Warnock left,McCabe has chosed SOD to take over, there would have been a meltdown from the fans espeically if KM said it was a 5 year long term plan.He is now seen by some as a messiah. What would be the reaction be if we appointed Eddie Howe...somene with similarr ideas to SOD ? I bet the immediate reaction from some would be 'cheap option'

The only mistake in my opinion was Birch alluding to SOD as his preferrerd choice for the job but if he does go ahead and appoint the man then it will certainly paint him in a good light. I suppose if we appoint someone else he can always say that whoever we do appoint was the mystery favourite so he did give himself a bit of room to manouver.

No complaints about the way it has been handled so far from me.

I said Birch didn't name names but his first statement, which is on official site, makes it pretty clear to me he is talking about SOD. Who do you think he was talking about.

I still have no idea what Ryan has done wrong, especially in the eyes of Donny fans - which is all he is bothered about.

I'll say again, Ryan made a very fair assumption that Birch wanted SOD, Ryan thinks we are shit (which is spot on) and why would SOD want to go to BDTBL? So what if Ryan is putting a spanner in our works and our attempts to do it 'professionally' - that aint his problem. His problem is keeping a very good manager and telling his fans what is happening.

Birch could have been referring to anyone Mic, you have chosen to believe it is SOD.

When we had made no approach for SOD, Ryan didn't have to comment, he has chosen to stir things up for his own benefit.

Mic, I agree with you on most things but you are fisghting a lone battle on this one....

Yes, he made an assumption. He comes out and says if we want him then substantial compensation is due. This is where he should have left it.
He then comes out saying, we haven't even approached SOD - why?
He then comes out and implies we have spoken with him and that he is confident SOD will stay - Fair enough, IF we have spoken to him.
Donny then release a statement, saying that SOD is not even part of our process..... - Fair enough if statements 2 and 3 had not been made.

They've caused a media circus from nothing, if we haven't approached him (as is being suggested), then why on earth do Donny/JR keep making comments.

.

I think this is where some of us disagree with you Mic.....Birch told us what his general criteria was and many fans thought SOD.....I personally thought Mickey Adams,Danny Wilson and Phil Brown.

John Ryan has made himself look a prick by commenting on his own speculation...if we haven't made an approach(and we certainly haven't made a public one),why is he making comments as technically there is nothing to comment on.

Lone battle? I think plenty of Blades though he was talking about SOD? Ryan could not care less about upsetting SUFC. You have to concede don't you that Birch probably was talking about SOD as his preferred choice - after all we have since approached him so I believe? Is that a fair comment? Why should Ryan then wait until he loses him? Why can't he try and show his fans he cares about whether he stays or not? It really is irrelevant if a few Blades are upset by his public comments and irrelevant if it makes a mockery of our attempts to do it 'professionally'.

should have put a ;) not a :)

I love it when you give me a good wink, mate

Not according to John Ryan

Why should he keep quiet though? There fans are worried about losing SOD, Ryan is trying to address that and couldn't give a toss about SUFC.

Hang on, I got lambasted the other day for saying we haven't approached SOD - wish you lot would make your minds up.

I've no problem what he says about us - in fact it'd be great if clubs talked about each other the way we fans talk about each other. My issue with JR (such that it is - I think the bloke's done great things for his club) is that it started out looking like there was a purpose to what he was saying - now it just looks like he likes saying stuff for the sake of saying it. He wouldn't be the first club chairman to enjoy seeing his quotes in print - buy I'm now at a loss to what his game is beyond being seen and heard.

It could equally be that a bunch of no-nothing journos can achieve their quota of words and get down the pub without having to venture out into the cold weather just be recycling non-news about a newsworthy item. This being the case at Christmas, that's the reason I'm happy that with nothing concrete to say, we seem to be saying nothing. Nothing worse than a bunch of pissed up sports journos putting 2+2 together with a quote over a pint and a nip in order to stoke up the shit-storm some more.

Hard to stress how much I disagree.

We haven't not got him yet, however we were told it would be difficult.

Birch basically said we are after SOD.

No he didn't, you just made an assumption that that's what he meant. Big difference. No one at the Lane has mentioned O'Driscoll by name and that's how it should be. I can't fault SUFC so far and hope we get the man the majority of us seem to want.
