For the clickless;

SHEFFIELD United have opened talks with Doncaster Rovers manager Sean O'Driscoll over a move to Bramall Lane.

The Blades, seeking a replacement for Gary Speed, were granted permission to speak with O'Driscoll by Rovers chairman John Ryan.
But they have also been told that he will not come cheap with Rovers likely to be seeking around £500,000 in compensation.
As reported last week, Blades caretaker-manager John Carver has a minimum of four games to stake his claim for the job on a permanent basis.

He opened his tenure with a morale-boosting home win over Swansea City last weekend and is now preparing for forthcoming fixtures against Hull City, Norwich City and Burnley.

In a statement on the club's website yesterday afternoon, the Blades confirmed that Carver will stay in charge of team affairs until at least the New Year.

It also stressed that the managerial appointment would not be made 'in haste' due to its 'crucial importance' and that a shortlist of candidates was still being drawn up.

Out-of-work managers Phil Brown, Paul Hart and Chris Coleman are among the leading applicants for the job. But O'Driscoll, 53, also expressed his desire to speak with the Blades last week and Ryan feels it only fair to allow him that opportunity.

Ryan, however, has not ruled out the possibility of O'Driscoll choosing to stay with Rovers – due to both the financial and the fan pressures at Bramall Lane.

"I have given Sean permission to speak with Sheffield United but I don't think anything will happen this side of Christmas," Ryan told the Yorkshire Post. "I have spoken to Sean and I am confident that he will stay.

"We have a better chance of getting promotion and we are willing to back our manager to the hilt. I don't know whether Sheffield United's fans would give him enough time."

Ryan refused to reveal the exact amount of compensation that would be demanded from the Blades but said: "It will be substantial. And if Sheffield United don't pay, they can forget about taking our manager.
"Sean leaving us in mid-season would put us in a very difficult predicament."

Intriguingly, the Blades are due to host Rovers in a Championship fixture at Bramall Lane on January 3. If the managerial situation is still unresolved, it could prove a difficult afternoon for those concerned.

If Birch is to be believed that compensation will not be a problem then this is excellent news. From memory SOD never spoke with Burnley as he wasn't allowed permission - he obviously wasn't that bothered about going there (who would?). This indicates that he has told John Ryan he would like the oppotunity to manage Sheffield United. Now go and sell the job to him Trev. Sell like you've never sold before!!

Odds for SOD to not be in charge of anyone when we clash next month? He'll have a gentlemans agreement not to take charge until after the game. Tuesday 4th January 2pm press conference to reveal SOD as the new manager of Sheffield United FC.

He's interested enough to listen to what we have to say which is a start. He will be tempted by the academy, the facilities, the fanbase, all more than he's got now but he knows he'll be under more pressure than he ever has been in his career and that will be a worry. He also said last week he wasn't sure we (the crowd) would 'get him' or give him enough time which again, will be a concern to him.

As you say, it's down to TB and the rest to sell the club to him, presuming compo is not an issue and let's face it, even we wouldn't go this far down the line and then pull out for the sake of £500K.....would we ?!?

My gut feeling is that the fact he's in for talks means he's up for the challenge, time will tell.

If he's got the balls to move and challenge himself he will come, if he's happy in his comfort zone at Donny then he wont. It all depends what SOD wants to do with his career

The only other issue could be Carver and Ellis. SO'D will doubtless want his own people in yet Carver may have a future with us, unless of course Speed has already lined him up as part of his team. Hopefully, he'll want Ellis anyway (Speed that is).

Bizarrely, his odds have drifted from 4/7 to even money this morning

Now, Shearer is an interesting one. Not saying he should be our manager, he shouldn't! But, he's been linked with both the Newcastle and Blackburn jobs in recent times, and said he's not interested in either. However, he has stated he would like to move into management in the future. So what sort of club is he looking for????

If Shearer wants to manage a club he should start off in the Conference and learn the ropes properly (as all young managers should).

The news hasn't broke yet on Sky Sports that we have been granted permission, watch the odds tumble when it does..............

I really want to believe that he'll be at the Lane in the New Year, and I really hope he is. But with most things Blades related-hope for the best, expect the worst.

So I am hoping for SoD, expecting Brown.

Can't he be on their bench in the first half and then ours in the second?

For gods sake!
If we know who we want why are we fucking around? just get him in so we can get prepared for the Christmas schedule!

busy schedule maybe the wrong time for a new man? think it may be a wise move to have carver take care of these fixtures until the new man can come in and have a bit of time with the squad without the pressure of quick-fire fixtures that come during the festive period? finer details always take a bit of ironing out too.

carver knows them and has been working with them for a while now.

1/2 now, everyone else on the drift. Nothing spectacular but I would suggest any real money for him in the next 24 hours will be telling.

I think it will come down to SOD having the balls or not!

Lets hope that the position of Faroe islands national team coach doesn't come up in the mean time, I'd hate to see another manager bottle the fight for a chance of managing a poxy little nation instead of digging us out of the shite

Some on SoD you know it makes sense

Apparently we need to take our time and not rush this one :)

I think the change in you this week shows how excited you are about this. I for one will be moving straight back to my seat on the South Stand if this comes off. I miss my seat :(

Or Switzerland ......

Who says we're fucking around??? It says we're talking to him. Surely that's progress. If he wants to come there's the small matter of compensation to be sorted as well as his contract. We can't just go appoint him as manager and then sort out the rest afterwards.

Do people really think its as simple as that? If we want him stop effing around and get him? Lets look at the pros and cons for SOD

Pros

1. United are a bigger club
2. United have a larger fanbase
3. United have a better stadium

Cons

1. Fickle fans who demand virtually immediate sucess.
2. No money
3. In a relegation scrap
4. Some awful players

So, does he leave a better team for a shitter one just because were "bigger?" and all this is before we begin to mention the fact that donny want "substantial" compensation and were fucking skint.

I've just looked at the Donny squad and to be honest it's shit. On paper our squad is far, far stronger! If SOD can do as well as he has done with the likes of Neil Sullivan, James Hayter, John Oster, James Chambers etc, all very, VERY average Championship players then, (given time!) he should be able to work wonders with ours!

GET HIM IN BIRCHY.

Oddly, if you look back at my posts during the speculation I have said its the wrong time for SoD, maybe at the end of the season once we are safe and slightly stable.

I wanted an impact man to come in and do a job ala Blackie post Robbo, but I just think the chance to make such a fundamental change to our playing style with a guy who has proven he can make a team tick is just too good to miss. I don't expect miracles, but SoD is the man we've all acknowledged has done wonders with Donny.

He could well be the man to take us forward (on a relative budget). Get him in, give him time, but just get him in.

I've not seen so many people agreeing (in principle) with posts for all my time on this forum, its sparked some decent debate, but SoD could be the man to make us United again... until we get turned over after 3 weeks

Get him Birchy, for christs sake...

Let's not forget that he's managed to make Billy Sharp look like a pretty good Championship player too, where others have failed.

RS saying this story is incorrect and that United haven't approached yet. To be fair JR granted his permission publicly, last Friday on SSN..........

He's on RS in the next hour as well so he should be able to put us in the picture (or not, as the case may be).
