I think the opposite, if we score early then we'll revert to hanging onto a lead, get forced back and inevitably concede.

The tactic of keeping it tight for 30 mins and then going from there is one that worked ok for us last season. In a few games we were average in the first half and improved in the second half, we are doing the opposite at the minute and seem to have run out of ideas by the 60th minute.

A goal anytime would be great@

Hate this trenches analogy football fans keep using as I wouldn't want to partake in a global imperialist war to the benefit of neo-aristocrats. I’ll start dishing out deserved praise when we start playing proper football again. Im not gonna pretend to be proud of us being on 1 point rock bottom of the league. They need to pull there socks up, stop feeling sorry for themselves and string more high tempo moves like we played to get here in the first place.

What disappoints me about United fans is the willingness to accept second best, the OP is a massive waving of the white flag. It's basically saying "well it was nice while it lasted, but back down to the Championship little old Sheffield United go".

There is no doubting what the players and Wilder have achieved has been unbelievable and they all deserve huge credit for that, but it doesn't give them the right to serve up this shite every week and lead us back to the Championship in embarrassing fashion. If they want to sit back and look at past achievements, then retire. We're in the Premier League and have the opportunity to kick on and achieve something big, it would be a crying shame to let that slip through our fingers.

Good post, not sure I agree though. Last season someone dives in front of the shot from Haller and Hendo doesn't even have to make a save.

Fair point. We certainly did defend much better as a team last season, but we obviously had JOC, a fit and firing Enda and a pre-covid mountain of a man Egan.

My point about the keeper though isn't just about the goal against West Ham. Look at all the goals we have conceded this season. Nobody can tell me that Hendo wouldn't have saved at least 3 of those goals. Rammers just doesn't make worldies - simple. And as the margins are sooooooo fine in many PL games it's stuff like that that can make all the difference.

I remember Norwich away last season. Right at the death Cantwell weaved through and shot - Hendo got down and made a fantastic save to ensure the 3 points. Rammers just doesn't (or rather hasn't so far) make saves like that.

I've not given up, far from it. My problem is that it looks like Wilder and the players have given up. There isn't any desire to change anything to give us a bit of a spark, it's same team and same tactics and fingers crossed this match will be different from the last however many defeats.

I'm sat watching matches crying out for something positive to cling onto that will give me hope we can get out of this mess, but it's just not there, it's deja vu. We need drastic change and I'm hoping Wilder will deliver that, but after 9 matches so far this season I would've thought the penny should've dropped long before now.

i know its 1 pt from 9 & ranieri at Leicester looms large. i still believe now sacking wilder solves nothing. performances aren't of struggling team. we played far better than derby & Sunderland. its only because of our own wastefulness v Villa Leeds Fulham Liverpool & West Ham we arent currently on 8-10pts. we have worse run i remember 2010 i think we went from mid December to end of march without a win

sacking wilder & bringing in "big sam", only makes us worse in long run. just have look at Sunderland for effects of short termism. also Norwich were awful at times last season losing the 9 or 10 games of the season. kept farke & currently top of championship. dyche went down & came back up

Matches are not won by keeping clean sheets - the best that this can achieve on it’s own is a draw .

To win a match requires scoring goals . This is something we’ve not been good at for a long time and is undoubtedly due to a great extent to the system we continue to persevere with , in spite of all the evidence that it now is simply not working even though it it has served us well in the past .

Unless and until this failure is recognised and dealt with , we will continue in our downward spiral and at the same time further enhance our reputation as being the least attractive side to watch in the whole of the Premier League

So far , there has been no evidence to suggest that Chris Wilder is not a good manager but the time has surely come for him to step forward and prove himself in this respect , rather than adopting the ‘dog in a manger ‘ attitude which seems to have overcome him in recent times .

I’m not saying that keeping a clean sheet would win us matches merely giving an opinion that conceding is currently having a disproportionate impact on our play.
I think a point can be made that conceding impacts our attacking play as players heads drop and we cease to use the ball effectively and start to play percentage football just helping the ball on into areas rather than taking personal responsibility for using the ball productively. It’s psychological more than anything to me it looks as if at 0-0 the players believe we can nick a win but that belief disappears after conceding. Would it help to score first and score early? Of course it’s just that with confidence so brittle conceding a goal is a bigger setback than missing a chance. Also the back 5 and the keeper is currently the most changed unit from last year and they need to build that trust in each other.
