Started his career at the blades as a midfielder and was fairly shite , but then he was played at both centre half and upfront and was fairly useful , if my memory serves me right. I hope his latest employment doesn’t last long and I noticed Wikipedia put his latest career as post football , which I thought was most adept

John Matthews the player who bottled the penalty! He was friends with a mate of mine called Les Tibbett (lovely man btw). I remember he used to occasionally come in to the Devonshire Arms in Dore. My other mate Paul Williams (submariner on leave) once said when he got a round in and a pint of lager and lime for the gay boy! Matthews wasn't impressed lol! The other tosser was John McPhail (centre half think) very arrogant man! But hey ho. UTB
I got to know John casually as I worked with his wife at Cherrytree Labs in Nether Edge & he would pick her up for lunch often & sit with us in the pub. He certainly had an edge & held himself a certain way, but he wasn't really arrogant, just had a lot of self confidence.

Was a bit of an unsung favourite player of mine in the 4th division season. Edwards Morris Hatton got most of the plaudits and rightly so but a good old pro was Truss, capable of popping up with s goal or two
Weighed in with some valuable goals that campaign Northampton & York away off the top of my head 👍

Pity he didn't have that confidence at 4.42pm on 2 May 1981...

Actually he was alright was Matthews. Scored a glorious volley direct from a corner kick that season against Barnsley to equalise at the Lane for us, after we had been played off the park for 80 odd minutes. Was a cracking volley into the top left hand corner at the Kop end (as you look at the net from the Kop).

I recall him playing v us for Hartlepool, early 2003, FA cup.. John MacPhail not Matthews.
My bad.
