I don’t think you understand the term ‘free’ header.

The Arsenal goal and yesterday’s were the hardest to take too, as they were scored by the smallest opposition player.

Ball watching seems to be a big problem.

For all our other problems ,if we don't fix this one we are relegated
I agree. I've no real basis for this, but I think finishing our chances is an 'easier' problem to overcome, than bad marking and defending.

It could be down to slack marking or could it be the wing backs not closing down quick enough, i think cwak will sort it out and im still confident well progress ok

In a way, there is also a big lesson for our forwards. One of the best ways of creating a clear chance consists of the player out wide putting in a good centre, and the player in the box creating the one yard of space for himself. Do that 5 times, and the likelihood is that you will create one really good chance. It does not need a tall striker, but a clever one. In our history, Pace and Edwards (centres supplied by Simpson and Edwards) were the 2 best examples. Move as if to go in front of the defender, then step back, and there is little the defender can do if the cross in inch-perfect. Looks easy, but requires great skill and persistence.

I was 5' and a tab end when I played center half and the best advice I was given was - you dont always have to win the ball, just make sure they don't either.
You don't have to foul the striker to get in their way, put them off or just make their header difficult.

Obviously, Mark the player well and attack the ball is the first priority, but if you lose your man or get caught ball watching don't EVER give away a free header.

Ah stevens being at fault for most of them anorl

I’m afraid that not filling the Jack shaped void with a capable LCB during the transfer window was criminal.

We spent big money in providing cover for the wing backs and huge money upfront to top up the already huge funds spent there but failed to address the number one issue I’m afraid.

It is usually deep crosses that go over the back three our wing backs ball watch and don't get goal side of the last man Baldock at fault for the first Stevens at fault for the second yesterday.

This is why not replacing JOC (as best as possible) was a big mistake. We knew he was injured from, what, the lockdown break onwards? It is likely at least half of those goals wouldnt have been conceded if we'd brought in a better option than Robinson and Stevens.

I think as a club we have let JOC and ourselves down. It was clear post lockdown he was injured and yet we pushed him to play. Now we have lost him for the season and if he had the OP back in July we would at least have a chance of him playing this season. We didn’t need to risk him post lockdown as we were safe from relegation.

Then to follow it up by not getting someone else in is a double whammy of our own making.

The whole situation looks amateurish and the sort of mistake you make as a lower league club.

The lack of goals is/was the number one issue, not the defence. No defence in the world is going to be perfect and never concede, and every goal they do let in will be perceived as "soft" but the defence isn't the reason for having 1 point from 6 games.

Beat me to it i was going to make the same point
if Jack O' had been playing or a decent replacement would we have conceeded 1/2 those goals?
For what its worth i think Robinson is a better prospect than Ednain in that position,
but what do i know

Saint Maximin last season as well. Did Maupay score a header as well?

Every team has had forwards trying to get in between the wide centre half and wing back, or at least peeling off the centre back.

That has to be tightened up. We've conceded most of our goals from those areas.

As disappointing as the start has been, being a tiny bit better there would see us in similar position to last season points wise even with a poor goals return.

Missing Jack
I agree that we are missing JOC, but in fairness he played the first 2 games and was partially responsible for the first two goals mentioned.

I said at the time that the window closed that not getting a replacement could prove a big mistake. To be fair finding a replacement that offers as much defending and going forward as Jack, but was within our budget was a big ask. Personally, I would have gone down the big streak of piss route. I haven't seen Lowe play much, but I feel that if he is not the answer for this role, then we are going to struggle to keep clean sheets. At least until Jan.

I completely disagree. The defence is the exact reason why we have so few points on the board compared to last year. We have shipped numerous soft goals (mainly from easily defendable crosses resulting in free headers) that would not have happened last year with Jack in the team and wouldn't have happened this year if we weren't playing Robinson or Enda there. We scored sod all last season but we were water tight at the back.

Wilder was saying we need to get someone in to cover jack 2 weeks before the window closed. So annoying to see our nemesis Aidan Flint playing for the s6 shower. Godfrey and Davies would have been great. This analysis of goals conceded is spot on and was indeed a problem with Enda a couple of seasons back. We need to coach the gaffs out of Robinson and live with less overlapping runs on left side for the sake of a better aerial defence. Would swap Flint for Brewster everyday of the week right now. What a difference from last season when you never had a concern from crosses. Get it sorted CWAK.

Aden Flint in the PL?! I've heard it all now.

7th best defensive record in the league on average goals conceded per game, even after playing Liverpool and Arsenal away already.

Lowest number of goals scored in the league, just 3 in 6 games with 2 of them from somewhat soft penalties that were only gained after VAR intervention.

I'd say that indicates the attack is more of a reason for being bottom of the league than the defence.

I feel we really shouldn't be happy with a defeat against Liverpool. Still only one goal from open play in 6 games. Please watch the video to see how I think we can fix this. Thanks all the best Gozza.
