Only played one league game in his entire career (when he came on as substitute in a home draw against Colchester in 2013). Are there any other former United players who only ever played one league game (for anyone not just us)?

Thank you, David Weir

He wasn’t signed by David Weir. Him and the other three that came in at the same time (can’t remember them all, was one of them Stephen McGinn?) were all lined up well before Weir arrived.

Edit: they weren’t signed by any of our managers but were brought it by whoever it was running the club at the time, I can’t remember the name (was it Mal Brannigan?)

That’s kind of remarkable for there to not even be some non-league sides listed. Is his page accurate?

Checked to see if Sal Bibbo or Adam Burley fit the bill but both had a handful of games elsewhere.

Was the experience of Weir’s United really so bad that he left football forever?

Not 100% certain on these 70s Peter Dornan , Richard Harwood 80s Gary Marrow 90s wirmola 00s Adam Burley

Wirmola played 4 or 5 games at the start of the 93/94 season and then mysteriously just disappeared off the scene.

He was one of the big summer signing that year alongside David Tuttle and Wille Falconer who also lasted half a season.

He played hundreds of games for Malmö though

Jasper Johns.

Another 'Sheffield United sign Jasper Johns on a two year deal' headline which had me scurrying to Wikipedia and dejectedly thinking 'what the fuck?'

Lewis Killeen played as a second half sub in our 1-0 home defeat against Walsall in 2002. That was his only league appearance for any club. He played non league for about ten seasons after that.

Players who have made only a single league appearance for United in the last 30 seasons (those in bold have played other games in cups):

Nathan Peel 1991-2 v Tottenham (sub)
Mervyn Day 1991-2 v Wimbledon
Carl Muggleton 1995-6 v Reading (sub)
John Ebbrell 1996-7 v Reading
Chris Bettney 1996-7 v Tranmere (sub)
Brian Launders 1999-2000 v Stockport
Manu Thetis 2000-1 v Gillingham (sub)
Ryan Mallon 2001-2 v Grimsby (sub)
Lewis Killeen 2001-2 v Walsall (sub)
Richard Edghill 2002-3 v Ipswich (sub)
Gary Kelly 2002-3 v Watford
Lee Baxter 2003-4 v Burnley
Phil Barnes 2004-5 v Rotherham
Tommy Johnson 2004-5 v Rotherham
Emmanuel Gabrieli 2004-5 v Gillingham (sub)
Danny Batth 2010-11 v Swansea (sub)
Graham Kelly 2015-16 v Coventry (sub)
Nathan Thomas 2017-18 v Norwich (sub)
Regan Slater 2017-18 v Preston (sub)
Jake Eastwood 2017-18 v Wolves (sub)
Ravel Morrison 2019-20 v Leicester (sub)
Jack Rodwell 2019-20 v Burnley (sub)
Rhian Brewster 2020-21 v Fulham (sub)
Max Lowe 2020-21 v Fulham

Some of these players will likely fall off this list at some point (perhaps as soon as this saturday for Lowe and Brewster).

I think Killeen, Mallon, Baxter and Graham Kelly are the only ones not to have made a PL or football league appearance for any other team.

Well I'm assuming that list is comprehensive but I was going to throw Tyrone Thompson into the mix.

edit: 3 apps apparently almost 20 years ago! Where does the time go?
edit 2: 2 of the apps were in the cup.

He never played a league game. He was unlucky: he played well when we beat Ipswich 4-3 in the cup in 2003 but never got a game in the league.

I think the person who most deserved another game on the list - among players no longer with us - was Chris Bettney. He played really well at Tranmere when we came from behind to get a draw, but Howard Kendall didn't give him another game, which was a shame.

Not 100% certain on these 70s Peter Dornan , Richard Harwood 80s Gary Marrow 90s wirmola 00s Adam Burley

Dornan played 3 or 4 games and went back to Belfast to study law. He played for Linfield as a part timer for some years.

I think Harwood might have played one other game. His debut was in our 3-2 win over Sunderland featured on Match of the Day. He was involved in the move for one of the goals.

Gary Marrow never played a league game.

Wirmola played 8 times but didn't settle and went back to Sweden. I thought he looked a prospect.

Burley actually scored in one of his appearances, v Swindon on the last day of 1999-2000 (Jags made his debut in the same game). Burley played one or two other times.

He never played a league game.
Weirdly both the BBC and soccerbase list him as starting the 1-0 league loss at Crewe in March 2001. He seems to have been mistakenly named in place of Simon Tracey on the BBC report and this has carried over to soccerbase.

Yes, that's definitely not correct.

A lot of names added here, but back to the OP, players that fall into the category of ALL the below:
  • Just one appearance for United
  • No appearances for any team pre-United
  • No appearances for any team post-United
Is the only answer Jasper Johns? And if that’s true, does this finally solve the riddle of “if Jasper Johns is the answer, then what is the question?”?
