Outgoing? John Lunsdtram

I think it's pretty much nailed on that he will be here with us until at least Jan, unless a surprise offer comes in from a club like West Ham on deadline day. He will be basically playing for a move now.

How much salary he will have lost be turning down our offer from last season? I think he would also want first team assurances which CW will surely say no to.

Oddly enough Wilder says that contract is still on the table for him. He has been more than fair to him because I would have withdrawn the offer at the end of last season.

Has a player ever left Wilder's tutelage and gone on to significantly better things? I'm wondering if that's what puts teams off. If Wilder's willing to get rid there's probably a reason.

Toney is the only one I can think of. I guess you'd say Ramsdale as well, kind of.

What's probably happening is that a club rings Lundstram's agent and asks what sort of wages he's wanting and then they don't bother making any enquiries to United.
Bloke on radio yesterday on White and Jordan saying that’s pretty much how it works these days; clubs don’t even bid for players unless they know they’re interested and affordable. (Otherwise you get egg on your face like Smith did with Wilson).

depends how much the bump was and what other accelerators or bonuses were in the offer, win bonus, staying up bonus, goal bonuses, signing bonus etc.

If it were lets say a flat 5k wage increase thats gonna cost him the guts of 400k by the time the contract runs out next summer. TBH though that will likley pale into insignificance with just the signing fee as a free agent will get him.

Its a gamble though a bad season or a bad injury and it could backfire on him. I wouldnt wish any bad luck on him though, id have rather he signed ut once he keeps giving 100% whilst hes here he should have our backing and we should all respect his decision to move on with no animosity.

Spot on, but goal bonuses are rare these days, they incentivise against team play.

The one I always find weird is the “loyalty” bonus. Large sums paid annually for, basically, not looking to break your contract.

I don’t think interest or affordability was an issue there, simply that the player was presented with more than one offer and opted for the other one. Which is sort of what happened with us and Antonee Robinson.

That'll be the new version of testimonial matches and testimonial years I would imagine where players, retiring after spending most of their careers at one club, used to have a testimonial year to get some money together for their retirement from the game.

Don't see many of those these days, if any.

DCL and Che too.

These are all tricky though as Wilder was wheeling and dealing rather than losing faith in these players.

Lunny is an exception to a degree, because Wilder clearly rates him but Lunny is holding out believing he us worth more.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up

He'll be back up to Berge until January. We'll then sign another midfielder and he'll be out of the squad. He'll leave on a free in the summer, with his reputation damaged and end up in the Championship or Scotland on less than we offered him.

I think PL clubs will still remember his impressive 3 month spell where coming on as sub before Xmas he proved he’s good enough at PL level.
Someone like West Ham or a Newcastle will offer him a 3 year contract on £40K a week....that’s a £6 million pound contract (small feed really).

He’ll struggle to establish himself....won’t play much....mainly be a back up player.....then....like you say he’ll end up in the Championship or Scottish prem
The thing is....he and his family will probably be happy with no regrets...as he’ll have a few million in the bank.

Yep he probably wants to earn himself enough to retire on. Fair enough if he can.

Plus his agent will be calling him "Lord Lundstram", whereas CW will be calling him "John".

I'm happy for him to stay longer as a squad player, but on a relative wage for his squad position.

Look how that went for Duffy, baffles me that you'd throw the toys out the pram, not play for your team in the prem then end up at Fleetwood.

They aren’t. They are included even in two or three year contracts and are routine, most players have them. When weekly wages are quoted for players they don’t tell the full story, the add ons are often collosal.

Don't see many of those these days, if any.

It’s not as simple as that though. Duffy is coming to the end of his career and (relatively speaking) hasn’t made that much money from the game.

I see it like this
Imagine if you were close to your younger brother and you’d supported him and given him gifts to support him over the years.
...then he wins £2million on the National Lottery and says he’ll give you a share of his winnings because he values your brotherly support.
Everyone is happy...you’re not wealthy and your wife is excited planing to buy a new car, fancy holiday etc.

Your brother turns up with a smile and a cheque for £5,000....you‘re grateful but when he’s gone...you’re thinking £5000 is a bit mean and should be nearer £20K.
Your wife says things like “he’s just won £2 million on the lottery and he gives you a measly £5000 share after everything you’ve done for him”
So you go back to your brother slightly embarrassed explaining how you’ve supported him financially over the years and feel £20K is fairer share.

The brother has 3 choices....he could accept and give you a £20K share, refuse but keep things amicable or he could become angry about his brothers cheek.
Wilder choose the last option.....he thought he was being generous offering Duffy a pay rise whereas Duffy thought in the circumstance he should have more.

You win some you lose some...but there should be no hard feelings towards Duffy.

I can yet see Lundstram re-signing. Barring injuries or suspensions, I doubt he'll get the opportunities to impress potential suitors and how many clubs are going to offer substantially more than Utd have based on a 3 month purple patch in 2019.

Fair play to the lad. What did we pay for him? £500k? He’s rapaid that imo and I’m sure if we sell in Jan we will make a few quid and even if he goes on a free next summer it’s fine with me.

I don’t quite get why people think he owes us anything? He may have made his name whilst with us but we were hardly kind to him in his first two seasons and players do feel that plus he’s an Everton fan not a Sheffield United fan

As laboured, nonsensical analogies go, that’s right up there with the best. Bravo!

Don't think we'll sell. Or rather, nobody would buy.

Could see rangers in for him after todays match, Think they have picked up few injuries, n Gerrard saying he needs to bring some in by the sounds of it

He is going to have to find some money then and buy him.
