2 new faces for the weekend....

Before we start to see an emotional head of steam appear, just remember, signing quality targets will almost certainly be about money, and the clubs we're competing against have larger budgets and can pay inflated wages, something that SUFC won't enter into.

Of course it's frustrating, but I'm sure that Wilder and his team are working overtime to secure those players he feels will add strength to our existing ranks.

Whilst not disputing the draw of a hefty weekly wage packet, I wonder if players (and their agents) ever consider the quality of the manager and coaching staff that comes with a transfer package? Surely it's as clear as day that Wilder and Knill have taken players with moderate CV's and turned them into vastly better players?
If this doesn't count for anything then what does this say about the modern day footballer?

Aston Villa are repeating this season's employment drive in more or less the same way they approached last season.....and without recalling the exact figure spent, if memory serves me correct I think they spent approximately £120million in that window, so who, out of their recruitment drive will survive and play regularly alongside the new recruits? AV seem intent on buying players that we're also interested in, but at a price that we won't/can't compete with. I know which approach I prefer, even if it means we finish this new season in a lower position. The only thing that matters is continued membership of the Prem, and under Wilder I believe this will happen, perhaps with the odd blip, but always mindful of the purse-strings.......this season is crucial to this club, and with new recruits I hope we'll see a better, improved version of what we've come to expect. UTMB!

More likely knows the weather in Sheffield so is expecting the Sty to flood again

Not sure what bodies or which road he’s talking about

Strange comment for Wilder to make. Everyone knows that the bodies are buried under the unused land on the Kop. Unless of course they’re being exhumed and reburied in Scotland as part of the upgrades to the Kop, in which case that’s excellent to hear.

Bodies coming up the road? Starting to sound like some sort of mafia hit job.

Exactly what I thought. The particular phrase I had in mind was 'more bodies on him than a Chinese cemetery', said about a particularly prolific killer in The Wire.

The Star saying they are hoping for another game in Scotland so I’m guessing the Road is the A1M and the bodies are mcgoldrick mcburnie and hopefully Moose.

Seems despite comments today from Wilder that no journalist asked where the players that were missing are and how's the transfers going. We know he likes Micky Mellon now though, that's good to know.

CW saying conditions in the transfer window are proving challenging

Delighted with his signing of Ramsdale

Still in talks with targets although concedes things are slow

Potentially a couple out and a couple of positions he needs cover for and to make us stronger "and we've made our big signing now"

It’s a different market and you have to look at that. We’ve made one big signing this summer and I’m delighted we’ve made it.

Unless something changes or someone leaves for big money I think this is where we are now for the next few windows at least.

One, maybe two, 'big' signings in the £15-20m bracket, a bit of suplimentary squad churn in the £5-10m region and some plugging of squad gaps at the free to £5m end.

Last window the big one was Berge, the one before it was McBurnie. This window, the big one had to be a goalkeeper. All young and with a strong pedigree.

I think that's a sensible approach that allows us to operate within our means but also improve and consolidate. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong but I recon anyone who thinks we're going to be chucking down multiple £20m+ deals is setting themselves up for disappointment. It's about PL consolidation now within our own means. Evolution. It's going to be a long game.

The market does certainly feel a lot slower this window, we don’t seem to be seeing many big transfers at the moment.

It’s unsurprising that things are slow. The new season is starting way too soon after the last one finished - add in all the additional complications and restrictions due to Covid 19.

I think it's also worth noting that we've sold no one yet and as such, we're not going to lay down mad papes on replacements.

That said, I think it will be a significant mistake if we let Robinson (C) leave for any less than we paid for him.

So we are now saying it’s the Pandemic that’s reduced the budget. Everyone else seems to be looking to spend.

Have you had a bang on the head - why are you so desperate to create bad news?

Do you realise that with the exception of Chelsea, Spurs and City, we've spent more than any other club?

It's genuinely like some people wish for the days of Alcock, Hill and Williams just so they can have a good whinge.

Who would have thought a couple of seasons ago we'd have spent 18m on a keeper and people would be complaining we've not spent enough.

Times is weird.

Wilder is often very coy in his interviews and therefore very hard to read. Added to that is folk tend to hang off every word he says and interpret things in different ways.
I don’t think anything has changed in the approach, he’s basically always looking at who’s available, who we could Viably sign and if someone ticks those boxes and will add value and improve the group he has the backing to pull the trigger.

For the time being £20m appears to very much be our ceiling on fees, and I also don’t see us spending that very often in one go a season. The concern is that for the kind of attacking players we really need, £20m and wages of £40k a week won’t get close.
So for all Wilder knows we need attacking improvement, he may be left with what he’s got and hoping we can repeat last season but with McB being a year wiser, McG finding some scoring boots and Mousset actually being available fitness wise for more than 15 games!
Then add a tweak to the system with perhaps a little more free reign to attack and take a few risks. Work on set piece delivery and variations and we may just score a few more goals...but also concede a few more too.
Big season coming up, lost our home advantage and away following, more than ever we need more quality in our play and to be able to retain possession better up the pitch. Let’s hope other teams stagnate and those coming up struggle!

I think it’s a half truth from Wilder and half a bit of bluffing. United have to sign 2 or 3 more minimum to stand still and he knows that. They simply have to and there is definitely a bit of money there.

I think Ramsdale is the big signing. In terms of profile, reputation and possibly fee he probably is. I do still think United will spend another £25-30m though. Clearly they’re still after Cash and Swift. Given the offers we’ve made that’s at least another £15-20m there.

I think we’ll make three more signings. One being a striker but not a big name, someone with potential that we’ll take a gamble on. Might be Toney?

So we are now saying it’s the Pandemic that’s reduced the budget. Everyone else seems to be looking to spend.

Who's spending? Don't get why people still don't understand where we're at as a club.

Have we decided who the Covid casualties are then?

Tbh I don’t have an issue with the clubs direction. My concern is our squad is to small to survive next season. Last season we were very lucky with suspensions and injuries compared to say Norwich and Bournemouth and look hat happened to them.
Yesterday we had 2 players out with Covid and for whatever reason McB and McG out (injured?) and we had to field numerous academy players both on the field and as bench fillers. The newly promoted sides seem to be in a position to strengthen, yes we reportedly spent £18m but I don’t see Rammers for Hendo as strengthening only standing still at best.
Unless there’s some rabbits to be pulled out of Wilders hat our depth and strength could be our downfall and come January the big clubs will be circling over JOC, Egan, Berge et al.
This is not negativity, yes we were 9th, yes we spent £18m to stand still but it’s a new season playing world class good strong sides getting stronger and we can’t field a full bench of seven 1st team players yet. Survival has to be the plan unless those rabbits appear.

I said this last week. Sides coming up have more to spend given their budget has rocketed. We’ve already spent our three years of Increased budget! Anything else over that will depend on sales, league position and winning stuff.
Technically the new sides possibly have the most players to buy though given last seasons was Championship quality. But that depends on how many can adapt. I think we were fortunate to have a new style system and a good manager.

But I am also worried it will be dificult to repeat without some additions up front or tweaks to the system. But when all is said and done, the budget is the budget. We can’t and shouldn’t break it and need to remain a stable and sustainable club. If that means we stay in the fringes of the premier league with occasional dips into the championship then so be it. Realistically it’s probably where we are unless we suddenly find a billionaire who’s happy to lose money for their own face.
