The serially-corrupt and disgraced David Blunkett is, it appears, still helping his chums at S6.

From today's Mail:

"Blunkett in bid riddle
The pivotal role played by Hillsborough MP and former Home Secretary David Blunkett (right) in Sheffield Wednesday escaping a winding-up order from the taxman has brought attention back to the extraordinary selection of Hillsborough as a potential 2018 World Cup venue ahead of Sheffield United's Bramall Lane.
Wednesday's submission claimed they would fund 2018 costs through cash flow from the club, yet they avoided administration only by Blunkett brokering talks that led to the Co-Operative Bank paying the tax bill of £782,000.
In contrast, United's proposal was bankrolled by rich-list chairman Kevin McCabe. Blades conspiracy theorists claim Wednesday's Whitehall fan base had big 2018 influence as well."

I have long thought we have decent contact somewhere within the mail. This gives further evidence to that fact. Can't see any of the other papers picking up on it though.

richards and wilko aren't .. neither are blunkett, betts and hattersley

Of those, only Richards is anything to do with the FA. He just happens to be on the World Cup bid committee as well. I think that is where you should be pointing.

ok but blunkett is implicated in this escapade so that's one. .plus the other two were influential mp's/cabinet ministers.. hello? :-)
oh sorry you're agreeing with me. .dooohh..

Blunkett is implemented because he supported the Wendy bid for Sheffield. Their bid stated that they would pay for the work to be done via Government funding for the education centre (subsequently rejected by the Government) and cashflow - which Blunkett was then in negotiations with the Co-op Bank saying they haven't got. Obviously Mr Blunkett and his colleague at the FA work very closely together have done since the time when the colleague at the FA got Wendy in such a mess in the first place.

This could go a lot deeper , cash for questions etc , however i really feel they have already succeded in the main aim , which was stopping us , and the fan park and transport reasons were rubbish .

It makes more sense to have the fan park away from the stadium. If only to reduce congestion. Don Valley would be ideal.

Well done to the Mail for giving some attention to this sordid and possibly corrupt deal. I suspect the Mail are only bothered because of the Blunkett angle but still nice to see it. As we knew at the time all that this grubby choice did was deprive Sheffield of any chance of any WC18 games. Don't really care about that other than this seemed to be the final straw that broke McCabes resolve, he's been a different bloke ever since (although there are multiple factors here not just the WC bid).

Spot on, Strap-on being a tw*t as usual.

Well let's face it. Our neighbours are in deep sh*t financially and need as much help as they can get. As their "promotion season" implodes they will need to use Cardiff-style money-juggling tactics to survive.

I agree with the sentiments above. Personally, I think that neither BDTBL or the Rust Bucket would have been chosen, because I dont believe England will get the cup again, so in that sense it is two bald men fighting over a comb. However there is a patent unfairness in the decision to favour the Bucket. Of course it is used as another example of our bitterness, and how we are still in the shadow of the pigs not that they can cast much of a shadow, but you'd have to be very naive or very biased not to have seen through the bullshit around the 'biggest classroom in Europe'.

Actually, thinking about it. Its the biggest classroom now. Lessons every Wednesday and Saturday. 'How not to run a football club - 101'

Just wait until they start using Asylum seekers to clean the car park and paint the stands... then the Mail will unleash hell on Wednesday!

It's about time that blind cunt tripped over his fucking guide dog and straight down a flight of stairs. Who does he think he is? His seat is the 5th safest in the country. I would like to see if he would be making such blatantly biased comments if his constituency were a marginal and his majority was about 500.

Award for best politically correct comment of the month.

Sour grapes if you are after a business loan, mortgage etc. from the Coop Bank only to find they haven't the funds as they've used them to prop Wednesday up.

Sour grapes?

Sour grapes it may be, but how would swfc supporters feel if United were a busted flush and had been awarded the world cup bid, and were expecting it to be paid with via public money, which swfc will?

Plus, is it correct for a Sheffield MP to be making embarrassing statements of supports for one set of supporters over the other? I don't recall Richard Caborn sticking the knife into your pig guts at any point during his period as a Sheffield MP.

Just a quick question then. If this situation were the same in say, Birmingham, and the blind bastard was MP for a seat such as Edgbaston, where the Lab maj is less than 500, and he were a Villa supporter, do you think he would make such statements or take such actions that would alienate Birmingham supporters that might keep him in the commons with their votes?

Anyway, considering the multi - billion £ sky tv deal that seems to be signed off every three years, and the fact that most prem grounds will be the hosts if we are awarded the wc, should a single penny of public money be spent on upgrading stadia? I don't think so at all.

Sour grapes?

Not at all if Wednesday were told that had to fund the bid 100% as they promised in the initial process then I would be more than happy for them to be awarded a place.

The problem is they can't afford it, and if when bidding they had disclosed that information they wouldn't of been awarded it over Bramall Lane.

I'd love to see Wednesday awarded it, along with a £10-15 Million bill for ground improvements.

The World Cup aint coming to England and if it did it aint coming to Sheffield.

I think England will get it for the simple reason that it will make FIFA the most money in the time of a global recession.

Sheffield won't be chosen because the ground is shite and they can't afford to do it up. Therefore Leeds will get it for Yorkshire whereas I think if Bramall Lane was chosen we would of had a great chance of hosting it.
