Billy - 2 year deal

The elephant in the room, I have to ask... was it necessary?

Considering he’s one of our top earners and not exactly Premier League quality, was a 2 year deal at his age necessarily the best option for us at this stage?

Great servant etc... but...
he did a lot more than Zivkovic who looks totally lost

I had high hopes for him but Zivvy but he has shown why he has ended up in China. That said he has tended to score goals at every club he has gone to but it seems he doesn't quite suit us.

I'd sooner work things out with Moose than keep this guy.

Not posted in a long time, considering the FANTASTIC season we have had, the forum has been strangely downbeat.

Now a post basically saying that we are now above having Billy Sharp in our squad. Beggars belief.

I have already said it in another thread, but I think sections of the fan base should start adjusting their expectations.

Don't be shocked if we sign Mo Besic on a free and we start with Callum Robinson on the bench next season.

At the moment the team seems to be suffering from a lack of confidence - there was a freekick in a similar spot to where we scored from against Wednesday, but I just knew no one would have the guts to shoot - and I think Billy's the same; his two chances today should have been hit earlier, the first he looked up for the cross when he should have shot and the second he tried to make it too unmissable.

I think he’s suffered as much as anyone from the pause and lack of crowds. He was one of our better performers immediately before lockdown, and had kept his place in the team on merit. Those chances today, and the header at Newcastle, I feel he’d have taken had they been the week following the Norwich game. He has always been a striker that’s had the occasional barren spell missing chances he’d usually take – it’s happened literally every season since he returned to us, usually followed by one of these types of thread. No issues whatsoever with him being in the squad next season tbh – seems a bit of an odd thing to focus on given he’s clearly not going to be in the starting lineup with everyone fit and following recruitment.

If anyone deserves a bit of sentiment it’s Billy Sharp. As someone’s already said it’s stupidly disrespectful to label him a mascot ffs. He’s not been useless or often looked totally out of his depth. Today and at Newcastle are the only times he’s been pretty wasteful, he rarely is. Still a good option to have imo.

It’s as clear as day that we look for the best possible chance to score a goal and that’s what we work on in training so there’s no wonder that one of our players hesitates when in some sort of shooting position.

Billy should have either smashed it or slid McBurnie in for his first chance and should’ve lobbed the keeper first time for his second chance, it shows that drumming things into players during training can have an affect on the pitch in a game situation, on these two occasions they worked against us as I can’t think of another reason why it took Billy this long to get a shot away.

I don’t want to turn this into a mud slinging contest but if Billy is finished then I’m not sure how that bodes for every other striker we have. Luckily, I don’t think Billy is finished just yet.

Please stop reminding me that Jags is on big money for very little playing time - hopefully he's not getting another contract though - if he does , I will be calling out CW as sentimental - something he promised he would never be with player contracts
So you genuinely can't see how having someone that has played at such a high level for so long, could be a huge benefit in the dressing room/training? Even after this season, he has more top level experience than our entire squad combined.

Of course I can see it but on a coach's wages , not on top player wages

Yeah they literally are my friend. He’s ‘great off the pitch’ if he’s not up to it on, what good is that? We aren’t in a position to carry players who aren’t good enough for too long. Even Chelsea let JT go and he was a one club man and total leader for 20 years

Well he might not be good enough for the last year of his deal, but we can carry that can't we? If he's not good enough he'll know it, and Wilder will tell him and he'll be light Leighton Baines and just appear on the bench when we're short of players and everyone will go "oh, I thought he'd retired".

You're problem is the second season of his deal which I understand, but surely we can afford to not be super cutthroat bastards with the club captain?

It's a bit of a oversimplification, but he's earned us 5ish points this season with his goals and assists, so that's about £7m in prize money.

Even if he's on £35k for the next 2 years, which personally, I can't see, that's only half what his contributions have earned us in prize money this season, so financially, he's paid for himself already I reckon.

How do we know he didn’t have offers on the table from elsewhere? Tells Wilder he needs a 2 year deal to retire on afterwards. Wilder offers him the two year because he knows how much of a huge loss it would have been to see him go to Celtic or West Brom or something last year, and for the sake of 20k a week for an extra season it’s a good deal.

He may not be as good on FIFA as a lot of other strikers in the Prem, but his value lies in keeping standards high for the squad and helping to police the dressing room.

People talk about our fantastic team spirit in the group, yet advocate getting rid of one of the key components of that and calling our club captain and legend a wage thief. It’s weird.

Sharp started this season as 5th choice striker. With likely recruitment up front, that will be his role next season. I don’t think he’s in anyway a bad 5th choice to have for next season, and I don’t really think this is worth much time debating. It’s as though he’s being assessed by some as one of our key strikers – that wasn’t his role this year, nor will it be next year. He contributed about as much as I thought he would this season, and mostly did pretty well in the role – pre-lockdown pushing himself up the order given Robinson’s exit, McGoldrick’s injury, and Mousset’s form.

He might have and will have had offers to go elsewhere - but Chris was willing to let him go in January!
If Chris was that desperate to keep him he would’ve said he’s not for sale, surely? But he left the decision up to Billy to make

Without reading through it all,so apologies if already mentioned, but for me Billy twice got himself in a position you would normally expect him to score. For whatever reason he didn't, be it an off day, or trying too hard and over thinking it as it would have been against one of his old clubs ? Nobody really knows. My point is, that the positions he got himself in to where he should have pulled the trigger I would still be expecting a Billy Sharp of 50 years old to find the net. I really don't think his age diminished his chances here.

In playing professional sport there comes a time in the affairs of men.
Billy's time is up at United's present level.
My worry is, this "job for the boys" move could help undo the close knit "togetherness" of the squad, support personnel and management.
I say 'help undo' as it appears to be slackening off, somewhat, of late.

He deserves full respect for what he's done for us and I don't think Billy will just sit on that contract next season, he'll play his part I'm sure, as he ha done this season. Looked a bit rusty yesterday but the team as a whole look knackered. With a break, Billy will be desperate to play as much as he can next season, if he doesn't then he still brings much off the pitch I'm sure.

Through on goal yesterday he looked across twice to check McBurnie's position. Had Mac made the right run at the right time I think Billy would have given him a simple tap-in. Mac made his move, but dropped off his marker a tad too late, leaving Billy no other option but to take it on himself, and he tried to nut-meg the keeper.
Many strikers don't bother to look up, preferring to take the chance themselves. There are very few top strikers good enough to justify that policy. Billy is unselfish and he's a team player, still worth his place in the squad - unless we suddenly see an injection of multi-millions into our transfer fund. He had a good first-half that almost had us sitting pretty with 3 points nailed on, so any talk of ditching him is nonsense.

Compare and contrast to Mousset’s easier angle and altogether simpler chance for the one-on-one vs Chelsea, and the reaction to it on here. The reaction to Sharp’s miss is grossly disproportionate to the actual miss itself.

Billy took a pay cut to play for us in League One, it's hard to think he's played hardball over a contract now and I don't imagine Wilder hands out big contracts on sentimentality. I'd still back him to get goals if we were dominating matches but that's not going to happen too often and a lot of the time he's a passenger.

Point is, without knowing what he's on you can't really say if it's a sensible deal or not. What you can say is that he's obviously seen as a good influence on the squad and in these modern times where fans are further and further detached from their clubs there's a value in having someone that we all feel understands and represents our values. He'll do a job on the pitch in a crisis too.

Having some sense of continuity through the club, having figures who represent the players and the fans alike, having good professionals setting the standards, it can't be a bad thing.

Let's not forget, too, when considering his stats, a lot of the time he is brought off the bench when we've gone behind or are struggling and his job seems to be to steady the ship, pick up the pace and add some dynamism into the team - which Wilder seems to think he is very good at. However, it isn't exactly ideal for him when it comes to creating impressive stats and making himself look good.
