The elephant in the room, I have to ask... was it necessary?

Considering he’s one of our top earners and not exactly Premier League quality, was a 2 year deal at his age necessarily the best option for us at this stage?

Great servant etc... but...

If he has the Leon role next season don't really mind but we can't keep relying on him

He’s a club legend but not a player of PL quality, he’s essentially stealing a wage. He’s one of our top earners, barely plays and when he does he squanders his chances. We need to lower the wages and make him a coach, he’s an excellent character for the dressing room, but free his wages up and we’ve got a brand new player of quality.

Worth it for his contribution off the pitch too. On the pitch, he's not taken his chances today, but he got them, and his general play and link up is good.

I'm happy with it, not if he's starting every game though obviously.
2 years though? Unless the contract is either a lot less than he’s currently on, or the second year is, it just doesn’t make sense. We shouldn’t need a mascot

I've said before his career at the Lane is very far from over, as a player however it's getting close. Perhaps he can be on the Bench and be the player that Chris seems to bring on around 70th minute.

It's really difficult to say but the lads had a banging career and become a long standing legend at the lane. I'm sure he will be aware he's getting a little too old for the game but it isn't always about the 11 lads on the pitch.

I think so, we'll see. I do think the second year is a retirement gift, but next season he'll still be handy, even if it's just the cups and his leadership.

Billy is stealing a wage and is nothing but a mascot.

Some of our fans are absolutely unbelievable...
Mascot aimed at me obviously, but that’s literally what people are saying if they’re talking about ‘how valuable he is off the pitch’ so you can retract that. That’s just a response to the role he’s apparently been signed up for. We do not need a mascot, and I’m not the one suggesting that’s what he’ll be.

Stealing a wage is ridiculous quite clearly

How do you know he is one of our top earners ?

He was when we came up. He’s had a promotion % bonus like they all have. Only a handful have since signed new contracts, go figure?

Unless he’s signed on reduced terms

He's in charge of the dressing room, sorts out all the new players settling and morale, has them round for dinner when they get here I think. That's a bit like a staff role, and besides I really think if we mistreated him and he left in a negative way there'd be a real stink around the place that would affect us on the pitch.

On the pitch he'll score you a few goals and can hold it up to see games out. So he's not a 15-20 goal striker but it's not like he's a manager's favourites forcing others out of the lineup. If others are fit or better, he's on the bench.

I'm not privy to his wages but I can't see him ripping us off, by the end of the next window I imagine he won't be one of our top earners anymore.

I don’t think there’d have been any negativity if we’d given him a year, why should there be?

Complete over reaction. He should be 6th choice striker after mcgoldrick, mcburnie, mousset (if still here) and 2 new signings, but his hold up play was great today and whilst the finishing was disappointing he scored an excellent header against Norwich and don’t see him suddenly being finished when he’s never relied on pace or athleticism.

I’ll back him as a great back up option who can keep going right up until his late thirties just like Kevin Phillips

No, it's not "literally what they're saying" at all.
You've just totally degraded the role that leaders play in a team's success.

Billy helped drag this club off its arse. He scored our first goal back in the prem and has contributed since in many ways.

I agree we need more up top, but he's fitter and leaner than ever and he will always snatch a goal any level, he's a great option and asset to this club.

2 year contract fine by me, and I'd imagine more importantly Chris Wilder.

Agree, Billy's hold up play is brilliant at times these days.

If we are to retire Sharp we are going to need at least 2* more better strikers than he is and I just don't think the money is there.
Both McBurnie and Mousset are better on their day but they have games where nothing is working for them either.
