If you’re not from Sheffield do you hate Wednesday or Leeds (or someone else) more?

I love the Blades and I don't have any strong dislike or hate for any other team. I'm just not interested in other teams. The nearest I got in recent years to feeling a bit of hate, was just a mild bout of irritation, and that was when Norwich City strolled into town with their terrible time-wasting tactics - the worst I have ever seen from a football team in 50 years of watching. But that was 2 seasons ago now and they were fine last time we played them so...live and let live.

When I was a young kid I was in the Leppings Lane end for a Sheffield derby. Wednesday were a bit agricultural in those days, "Chopper Pugh" anyone? I remember the Wednesday player Mick Prendergast being a nasty piece of work. I remember John Hope teasing him and Prendergast spat full on in his face. At that point my stomach churned and I thought what a vile football club they are. That incident and the kicking lumps out of our players...no I really didn't like them at all. But even so, I wouldn't call it hate or anyway near that. I just think they are an amusing irrelevance.

As for Leeds, well the whole nation disliked them for what they were in the 70's. Successful. But successful with a strong element of physicality and cheating. They'll always be remembered for that outside of Leeds.

Sounds like a top fella, your old man. I agree, he does do it right. Fuck the Owls.
One of his favourite song is:
My old man said he a Wednesday fan. He said son let's go to the game, I said f... off I'm going to the lane, so I went down to John street bought myself a stand seat, at half time the blades were 3 - 0 up, then I went down west street supped a gallon of magnet and I got myself pissed up

Hate is a very emotive word. I don't hate any team or football supporters. My dad and grandad were both Wednesday supporters. I do dislike Wednesday more than Leeds though.

Brought this to mind after the unfortunate promotion of dirty corrupt cheating Leeds United.

Bear with me on this.

Many of our fans are not from Sheffield nor have they ever lived in the city. For the Sheffielders among us there is no question that a hatred for Wednesday trumps all others and I completely get that but for those of us with no ties to Sheffield other than a love of the Blades are Wednesday the one and only or is it more complicated than that?

Using myself as an example I’ve lived in and around West Yorkshire for the last 30+ years and I’m surrounded by Leeds fans. While I do know a few wednesdayites it is fair to say that I get more grief and have more banter with Leeds fans than Wednesday so my football dislike (hatred if you prefer) is more evenly split. When they play each other I generally hope for a dire 0-0 with six red cards and two or three career ending injuries each. In the end I guess I do fall into the rather seeing bad things happen to Wednesday camp but it’s much closer for me than for born and bred Sheffield Blades supporters.

I’m curious how other non-Sheffielders feel. Is it Wednesday above and beyond anyone or do other teams sneak into your thoughts?

I've lived mostly in Leeds since 1969 but I still detest Wendy with a pitchfork-toting passion!

I have very few Leeds supporter friends, 4 in total. Two of them are really nice people and great fun. Just as cynical about their team as we can be sometimes. The other two are grotesquely arrogant in their knowledge of the right of Leeds United to be sitting up there with the Football Gods. In their rightful place as they say.

Yellarbellyblade other than Leeds I've also lived in Silsden, between Keighley and Skipton. Do you know it?

9 times out of 10 I don't particularly care, I'm more for having a laugh and a joke about the football rather than arguing. Every now and then though you get one of those arrogant fans that can't fully accept Leeds or Wednesday are no longer the top flight clubs they used to be and scrutinise every performance of the Blades, that's where I go on the wind up just to make it more fun.

If I'm honest I always watch Wednesday on the telly to see how the other side are getting on. My main way to annoy them this season was to tell them I don't concern myself with such low league matters. Suppose I can't do that to the Leeds fans next season.

I do mate I’m not far from there myself

Born and raised in London. First team I watched was Wimbledon FC before the Milton Keynes move took them away and my Blades supporting Uncle took me under his wing (my mum was a Blade, but less pushy!).

Most hated clubs for me:

  • West Ham. Just something about them I don't like. I found myself going to West Ham away a lot when I was younger, so it was sort of embedded then, and they always seemed like such a scummy bunch. Tevez saga didn't help. Also have two mates who are West Ham fans and they're idiots. Years on and still find them scummy, epitomised by their current owners. Did sort of get where Wilder was coming from when he spoke well of the club, but nah, not for me.
  • Sheffield Wednesday. I don't have the visceral hate that other Blades fans do but over their years I've found that their fans talk utter shite. Hatred well and truly solidified when I was on my way back from a wedding in the Summer that we'd been promoted from League One. Cab driver was a Wednesday fan and he told me all journey how the Championship was going to be harder than I thought. I hadn't even been too confident about it, I'd just said I was looking forward to it. I' never really in for the gloating as I think it can easily blow up in your face. This cab driver pissed me off though. By the time we'd got back to where we were staying I'd told him to fuck off. Was with my Mrs at the time, and her sister and her sister's other half. None of them really football fans. We're no longer together.
  • Leeds. Fans think they're the greatest club in the world. They're not.
  • MK Dons. Reasons mentioned above. Plastic club. Hate for them has slowly gone down the years as they're barely worth consideration. I did go to the first big game between AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons in MK and wore my brother's old Wimbledon shirt. Went mad when Wimbledon equalised. Also loved hammering them in Milton Keynes in our promotion year. Superb day out. Also remember being very impressed with their right back that day. Turned out he hasn't been that bad for us either.

I’m from Sheffield and don’t hate leeds. Maybe due to my age but Leeds have always been just aN average championship side with great support, and I’ve just never felt any hatred towards them

The pigs will always be our main rivals regardless of where you live.

I have irrational hatred of random teams, can’t stand Liverpool, mainly because I couldn’t abide Gerrard as a player. Chelsea due to Terry and Lampard.

I don’t like Leeds but only because their fans are generally shitwasps.

Leeds, similar to Liverpool fans before this season dine out on things that happened 20 odd years ago and think that they have a divine right to be at the top of the top table. Wednesday fans are just that insignificant now it's hilarious.

Born and bred in Sheffield but lived in Nottingham for 60 years.
How great did I feel when Swansea slotted in that late 4th goal last night and Forest finished just outside the playoffs.
What a shame ! Derby to be relegated by points deduction please.

Shitwasp is a fine word😂

Lived in Sheffield all my life, from Attercliffe, Longley, Hillsborough now Oughtibridge.
Most of my close circle of friends are Wednesday fans and we've had some great banter together for 30 odd yrs.
But I just can't bring to stop myself despising the S6 mob, there are so many of them that's totally deluded with their comments and thought process.
Not sure if I'm classed as obsessed with them, but I look for their result before anyone else's, hoping they've got stuffed every week.

Last year when I was on my holidays in Spain I got talking to a guy who was a bar manager in London. He saw my blades shirt and as you do we got talking. What he said was how different blades were to pig supporters. He said blades were in general were a decent set of supporters. He said that every grunter he spoke too was obsessed about the Blades. Telling him and anybody who would listen what a big club they were.

Some interesting comments on here.

For all the posters who weren't born in Sheffield or ever lived here I'm keen to know how you ended up a Blade?

I'm assuming a family connection of some sort as we aren't really the glory hunters team of choice.

Born in Sheffield, moved to Bristol when I was 8. Adopted Bristol Rovers as my second team, have had lots of battles against Bristol City with both Rovers and more recently blades so Bristol City are more of an enemy to me than the fowls.

I think every pig says the same about us. In reality another bar owner down the road might have spoken to a few Blades that were bell ends. We know the truth though.

Born in Derbyshire but lived in Sheffield most of my life. Father from Nottingham but mothers side is where the Blades connection is.

Posted on other threads you have to live amongst Pigs to understand why we dislike them so much. Dad always said in his experience not being a native of Sheffield the big mouths and bullies on the estates at work and in the working mens clubs tended more often than not to be Pigs.

Even worse if you married into them. Other halfs mothers side are the classic example of Pigs. Never go always spouting off about how big they are and unable to have a coherent and sensible conversation about football.

Pigs I went to school with typified how uncomfortable they are with not being top dog. When we were both in the Third Division many times I said it would be good if both teams were in the top league. They disagreed. They preferred to be down amongst the dead men in the lower divisions if it meant the Blades never had any success. Oh how I wish I was still in contact with them.

As for Weeds scum you have to be of a certain age to despise the Revie cheats and their glory hunter fans who used to turn up on our Kop at 5 o'clock for evening games just to say they had took it. They had some success condensed into a 15 year period yet to hear them speak at the moment they are one of the top 4 clubs in the country. Not even in the top 10 when it comes to honours achieved.

Who do I want to win when they both meet. Weeds every time because the Pigs are our one and only rival.

I’m from the United States and have never lived in the UK, though my family is originally from Yorkshire. Been a blades fan since 05/06, when English football finally became regular on American television stations.

For me, my ire is directed less to Wednesday and more to West Ham (Tevez), Watford (white collar elitists), and Arsenal (library for a stadium).

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no fan of the piggies, but I love watching the derby. And the Leeds rivalry hasn’t exactly been at the forefront since I started watching.

I end up hating teams that, to me, look like they have fans with no heart, or they ripped ours out unfairly, as is the case with the hammers.

I was born in Sheffield and moved to Lincolnshire when I was 7 years old, and have lived the last 10 years in the Midlands. whilst I dislike Wednesday and Leeds I perhaps do not have the same dislike as people living in Sheffield.

I live in a big Villa supporting area so they are the obvious ones to dislike for me.

In truth, only when we play either team do I care or not as the case may be, don't hate any team or it's fans, I only care about one team win, lose or draw.
Not enamoured with a few clubs/fans for various differing reasons but most of the time not bothered either way, if Wednesday or Leeds are playing scouse or cockneys I'd rather a Yorkshire side wins, Leeds vs Wednesday, I tend to prefer the Sheffield club wins. The whole pigs this etc especially between families seems pretty purile and childish, don't get me wrong when we beat them I'm happy to hand out banter as I received it in those long distant days when they beat us.
Not a popular view but I remember my old man, born n bred within spitting distance of BDTBL telling me of those days when Sheffielders, no matter allegiances went to whichever ground had a home game, supporting the city.
Leeds are like an only child, most other clubs pity because they will always be alone and have a high opinion of themselves.
Wednesday are like a twin an hour older but still thinks that gives superiority over the "younger" twin with no grounds at all.
Sorry for the novel .
UTB.

Family connection for me. Dad grew up in Conisbrough and went to watch the Blades with his mates, passed it down to me

Don't mind Leeds anymore since we ran them all over their city in 1989. Run at home run at home run at home! Lol. All they can do is smash seats...pathetic!

As a non-Sheffielder it varies. While I obviously hate Wednesday, my main hatred is towards Man City, but it used to be Liverpool, at least while that diving twat Gerrard played for them
