Luke Freeman

I've been thinking of the role Freeman has played this season, a couple of impressive cameos but nothing to particularly make you sit up and take notice bar the odd good performance in the cup games.

It mirrors the season Lundstram had with us in the championship before becoming a regular starter. Could be that Wilder & Knill are looking to next season with a tweak in formation which will see freeman start more games to give us some much needed creativity up front and make some chances. He's the only player in our squad at the moment who looks to be able to do what Duffy did for us in the Championship.

I think all the talk of him moving on may be premature. It seems strange to me that we let Callum Robinson go out on Loan for example but not Freeman. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just wishful thinking as I like him as a player.

I agree with most of that. I also think that next season will see a different style of play, the current style has recently proved to be easy to counter, of course there will be different formations through games as there always is these days with every team/manager, I also think we will have more a somewhat different team depending on who the club can move on and then again in recruitment.
I don't think the purchase of Berge, Robinson, Freeman, Osborn, were to have them sit on the bench or not even in the squad, not all of them will make the grade but i think it is the start of another transformation, especially with some of the 1st team squad reaching their "twilight years"

I've had pelters on here for saying it, but I thought he was the most talented of the 3 we bought.

I can only assume Tufty (who sees him every day) thought he was either a) not good enough for the PL or b) he needed some more game time...

Either way, if West Brom make a bid I think we accept
I think we need to buy Another of Bournemouth strikers, just not the worst one this time, or maybe Pukki from Norwich??

We've not really played in a way which suits him. I suspect he was bought for a plan b which never materialised. I don't think he's defensive enough to play in Fleck's role and not good enough up top to feature in McGoldrick's. I've not seen that much when he's played to convince me differently.

We already had a reduced budget as we borrowed £10m for Sander. Let’s assume the budget was around £50m. We borrowed £10m in Jan so then £40m. Then factor in covid and I reckon we are looking at £25m plus any sales.

Hopefully we get Deano back £2-£4mil.
I’m fancying a Freeman plus cash for Eze £10mil.
That leaves £10mil which isn’t a great deal for a striker, CB and at least one FB.

expect sales this summer.

I'd like to see us play a few games with this formation next season to go for it a bit more...

Back 5 would be the same, Berge and Osborn/Fleck as DMs and McBurnie as the striker.

That leaves the forwards which I would love to see Luke Freeman have a go at. I'd even like to see Robinson given a go in that position too. We also have McGoldrick who could play there and might be room for some of the players talked about in the rumours like Eze or Brooks

JOC won’t be leaving for 35 million but I can see them cashing in Basham for 10m because of his age irrespective of him defying being a pensioner
If Bash is a pensioner Billy must be getting on a bit for a striker !

I can understand the potential for selling Mousett, Lundstram and even Callum Robinson, all for very different reasons.
Luke Freeman has shown enough, skill and utility, for him to be retained.

I like the look of that, it's also not too dissimilar to our current system as even though we play two up front that usually involves one of the strikers (Mcgoldrick) dropping deep to link with the midfield. With our current team that formation could easily have Norwood and Berge as the DM's with Fleck as the LFW, Mcburnie up front and Mcgoldrick as RFW.

I think a two man CM / DM combination could be looked at next season considering both Berge and Norwood favour that position and we currently only play with one pivot / sitting midfielder.

First thing, I love your avatar! That's Bamboozle isn't it? I owe my education to that Academy.

When Luke Freeman was at Stevenage I thought he was one of the very best young players I'd seen for a long time. There was one game at the Lane I recall when he was running rings around our players and we just couldn't get the ball off him. I wish we'd have snapped him up back then. We'd have got him for a song and he was clearly in his prime at that point.

To me he's not looked the same player since. Certainly not since we signed him. Whether that's down to the system we play him in or just his form, or motivation, I don't know. But I think improving the effectiveness of our midfield, in an attacking sense, will be a priority for us for next season and whilst this ought to be playing to Freeman's strengths he hasn't done much to show that he's capable of being the man to do that. I don't wish to be harsh on the lad, but if I was Wilder I think I'd be nervous about putting my trust in him to deliver the goods at Premier League level. If you look at the types of player we are already rumoured to be signing, like John Swift of Reading, I think that's only going to push Freeman further down the pecking order.

The analogy with Lundstram is an interesting one - but I also think it's very rare and unusual that a player who doesn't feature much at all at Championship level is suddenly elevated to first team status at Premier League level. I'm pretty sure Chris hasn't been keeping Freeman under wraps so he can use him next season to spring a surprise on the Premier League. I don't think he did that with Lundstram either. I think Lundstram probably worked very hard on his physique and his fitness last season to emerge a much stronger and more capable player - and he got his chance - fair play to him. I don't see lightning striking twice in the same place tbh and I think it's far more likely that Freeman will be released and probably head back South, where he has spent most of his career.

Anyhow, we shall see I suppose. I just think we need some fresh options in that midfield and that will inevitably mean cashing in on some of the existing ones, even though they may be very good players, so that a new order can be brought through.

Was thinking something similar on this yesterday. For all the apparent unwillingness to use him, had he not picked up the injury when he did from what Wilder said in response to Osborn’s selection it sounded like Freeman had been in his mind to start. I don’t think Wilder doesn’t rate him, but views his contribution to be a specific one within our current system. If we do tweak it, with the right and left sided options in midfield able to be a bit more weighted to being attack-minded, then I do think he’d be used a bit more.
Well at the moment the " system" is patently not working.
Something needs to be done to sort it out.

We’ve had two poor performances.... after pretty Handily beating 3 of the likely top 7 this year.

No ones saying we can’t tweak and improve but let’s have a bit of perspective. We’ve not even had a fit fleck (who’s easily in our top 3 players).

As fantastic as Bash has been, I don’t see any club splashing out £10m for a 32 year old defender, especially in the current climate

Money isn't everything..........seriously. Its easy to spunk money on players just because you've got it. Would rather us have a limited budget and spent wisely...........as we've done in the past to create our exponential rise up the leagues.

Freeman’s been injured since the restart otherwise he’d have been playing instead of Osborne
