14 players all had off days? I'm looking for a common factor, were they all up till 3 playing CoD? That might explain it. I'd say Rogers out thought Wilder.

I'd say that's a little strong. Not sure he out thought Wilder but he certainly implemented a game plan which totally flummoxed us and didn't give us room to breathe.

As others have said, when you get a more talented group of players to match our work rate, then that's when we really get exposed (Citeh, Liverpool, Man U away, last night)

My two penneth.

Overly harsh on them in the public domain. Crossed a line tonight did our Chris and let his emotions overrule his professionalism. A rare thing. Probably realises Europe looking a bit beyond us right now and is rightly a bit miffed about it.He will reflect on that in the morning with some regret.

Behind closed doors, absolutely fine. Give em the hairdryer if you must.

UTB
No nonsense approach why bullshit when he was saying everything the nation watching was saying
We looked mentally and physically not up for it - they did - and as much as playing at this level is about technical ability it’s also about mental ability
We showed neither last night and that’s why they would be league 1 championship

players generally lap up the adulation they get from their managers and the media so by the same token to perform and achieve at the highest level consistently they have to accept criticism from the same

I also think he’s protecting his players by him saying it before the National and World pundits and media say it

My son sent me a text saying, Have you seen the wilder interview?

He says... I am a big fan of his candid honesty, But there are parts of what he keeps saying that I’m not sure will do us good in the long term.

I don’t think I’ve seen an interview where he doesn’t say that we are a league one team and essentially can’t compete. I mean, we are in the premier league 8th in the table... when do they become premiership players? That’s what I’d be thinking as a player right now. It might be true, but is there no element of man management in his tact? maybe he’s trying to get Lunny etc. to back down on their pay rises they are likely going in for?

He says the same every time though, the media love his honesty, ”We are playing against world class players” is another one of his faves. The players have done really well but they don’t need the manager to keep telling them that they are League 1 players and need to play at the top of there game to get a result, I mean he is correct, but does it always need saying? these players are playing out of their skin.

CW and is staff and players are doing us proud, if he needs premier players then he should see the Prince and buy premiership players and pay premiership fees and wages! I must admit I tend to tune off sometimes because it’s like listening to a broken record.
Wilder is right if the players dont play to something like 100p% we will get beat that was the message he was putting across .
He was angry because he has said this before.
He will expect a response! If he doesn't get one then he knows the player wants out and he will help them on there way.
No sentimentality in a successful football team.

He did the same when we put a shambles of a performance in away at Hull the year before we got promoted.

Expect a reaction on Monday...

I actually thought Henderson, Egan and Basham played well. I thought the substitutes did make a positive difference and I thought Fleck and Norwood had reasonable, if not sparkling, games.

Egan and Norwood for me were both culpable on the first goal, very static in reacting to Perez. Egan trying something that looked about 10-90 likelihood of success when isolated out right, knowing he was one of the defenders furthest back, was the main avoidable cause of the 2nd goal. But I did think Henderson played well. Norwood didn’t cope with the lack of space, and then when he did get on the ball his long-range passing was erratic – one ping attempt first half that was closer to pong as it just went bang in between Basham and Baldock

Great interview - exactly what you want to hear after that performance.
Only thing that worries me was him alluding to we “won’t see much change next season”. Hopefully reading too much into it but sounds like funds are at a premium. Maybe just more Wilder transfer tactics....

He said in January that we moved some of the funding forward from next season’s pot to bring Berge in. Since then the club’s lost millions of expected revenue due to the lockdown. We’re still likely to go with 20 of the current squad, so that didn’t seem like a particularly controversial comment for him to make.

I wondered if that was a message to the players not to expect a queue of big clubs offering them massive wages for next season.

CW has to take a bit of the flack himself....he was out-coached last night, exactly as he was against Bruce in the two Newcastle fixtures. Rodgers and Bruce concentrated on our strengths and nullified them expertly, then looked at how they could exploit that and did so. The difference between this and Chelsea/Spurs/Wolves was that they all thought they merely had to turn up. Leicester were first to every ball last night, so much so they looked as though they had an extra player or two on the pitch.....resolute and solid in defence and quick on the break. As soon as I saw their back 3 it was clear long balls up to McBurnie would be a waste of time, easy day at the office for Morgan and Evans.

Last night was a carbon-copy of the two games against Newcastle and if it wasn't for some woeful finishing and saves from Henderson could have been embarrassing.....5 or 6 nil wouldn't have flattered Leicester. Thanks goodness they had 4 or 5 out injured....

That said, the players looked clueless, heads went down and we couldn't even get the basics right....lost count of how many times we gave possession away and miss-controlled.

Poor all round.

Don't get me wrong, I think Roy Hodgson has done a great job at Palace. But when I hear him interviewed I get the impression he is not too concerned with Palace's bad run because they are staying up. I prefer Wilder's attitude of always driving on his players and never accepting second best.

This, 100%!

we have come up against other more talented teams (wolves, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U) and taken points due to the tactics and determination. The teams who have beaten us twice have matched us in this respect and the quality has shown.

Not a great deal in our armoury to combat those sides in these circumstances!

Love CW's interview says it how it is. I dont think Leicester tactically were better I think its our turn to say Leicester won because we werent at our best. So many times "bigger teams" Managers have said their team lost because they had an off day. Well that was our off day. At the end when he nearly swore (well he did swear just after) it was almost as though he was saying we were aiming for a Europe place without actually saying it. I think something else is going on behind the scenes he is not happy with almost as though they are acting liked children ?

Only thing is CW is disappointed because his players were simply not 100% Blade.

Can't really disagree with any comments about the performance, seems everyone is in agreement. I don't think this season we have ever been caught so many times down that left side, it was constantly open.

Perhaps Chris weren't as diplomatic as most managers would have been and by the sounds of it the players will have bore the brunt of it in the changing room but in all honestly, underlying any bollocking they will have received, Wilder and the squad know just how good they can be - personally I think that could be what annoyed Wilder the most.

Euro might have been lost but I'm happy for that to be our biggest disappointment of the season.

Wilder not used to losing without excuses simply cos we were second best. No var, flukes, or missing players. Not the plucky unlucky this time just worse. By a lot. How often has that happened in last 4 years? And it hurts him to see so a lot of emotions we don't see often coming out. Don't think it was thought through just an emotional response which is what you get for better or worse with him. Seems a bit out of sorts having a big go at some of his mates in previous interview. Hard work beats quality when quality doesn't work hard. This time it did. Move on we can't finish lower than10th. Absolutely fucking amazing season.

I highlighted the Hull interview from 2 years ago in the other thread. It is almost word for word what he said yesterday bar the contract stuff and he said "Maybe this is the maximum these players have" in the interview two years ago.

You can talk about tactics and technical ability all you want, too many players didn't do the basics right.

Poor control, poor touches, laboured in possession. How many times when we broke did we have one player up? How many times when they broke did they outnumber us? At times it felt like we 8 players in midfield.

Wilder isnt infallible but the main issue last night was too many poor individual performances and not our usual attitude.

No issue whatsoever with his interview.

There does seem to be an epidemic of collective amnesia on here any time Wilder does something like this.

I think it was a bit harsh on the players to slate them, as 1) they’ve been largely great this season and 2) it would have been asking them to play absolutely out of their skin to unlock that defence tonight.
Just on your two points, point 1, he addressed this, he's not interested in giving them a bye based on past successes. I understand that, we as fans can do that if we want, but he's not doing his job if he does it. On 2, I don't think it's about expecting them to beat every team, he just expects them to try to.

True, I recommend people go and watch it the interview from Hull. He was trying to drive the team on to finish in the top 6 of the Championship and we followed the poor performance up by beating Reading.

Also, Norwood has pretty much come out and said similar to what Wilder has said regarding the performance.

I was one of the small number that went to that one (mid Beast From The East) and we were excellent – it was exactly the response that was required.

It doesn’t always work (he was quite angry for example after throwing away the lead vs Gillingham in Jan 2017 which preceded the Fleetwood defeat next game) but I do think he’s fairly careful about the times he chooses to deliver a public bollocking.

Although it doesn't excuse the performance but it always reassures me that players come out and say the same as the manager after a bad game. After the last few weeks I have seen Basham and Norwood look very downbeat after a bad game but still very honest about the performance.

CW has done exactly the right thing on having a pop at them for the poor performance yesterday. If you accept that level of performance and don't call it out for being unacceptable, then you will start to see more and more of the same as the player's will decide when they can be arsed to turn up or not on the day, and it will all be OK as the manager won't call them out for it.

Bollox to that. CW had reminded them in no uncertain terms that they aren't that gifted as players whereby they can just turn up for PL games, put in half arsed performances, and still be good enough to come away with something. As he says, we have to be at our best (effort wise) to stand a chance of getting something from the game. They didn't and could have been on the end of a right hiding if it wasn't for Hendo.

CW called it exactly right, and I liked the fact that he said he wasn't bothered about past results, hes only interested about the one we've just played. He said everything I wanted him to say about the players, after that performance.
Wilder dodnt take any of the blame himself for any errors he may have made in team selections, tactics, motivation and preparation. He is also part of the 'group' and, whilst his comments are valid, he appears to exclude himself from any criticism of yesterday's 'no show'

Yeah I think he got the subs wrong yesterday but maybe he will watch the game back at look at where he went wrong. That said all the players he brought on didn't do enough either.

Very much this. Wilder and Knill can do all the planning in the world but when you've got players like Baldock cocking up his first touch then it's got to come down to the players. We were getting exposed at the back in a way that I've rarely seen and up until Leicester got their first and then calmed the game down a little we were doing nothing but waiting for them to score.

And let's be right about it, Leicester were as good as their league position suggests. I think we could've played our best last night and still not have it been enough if Leicester had done the same. Still, we have to judge our performances by our own standards and we simply weren't up to it.

I'm blaming Wilder, he's got selection wrong or tactics wrong or both. 14 outfield players don't all look wank at the same time for no apparent reason.
I think he tends to play a winning side and keep the same players involved, but its not the first time its happened this way. Maybe somewhere fatigued from Saturday or complacent? As good as Osborn has been maybe it was a game too many, same for Sander.

He will be looking at every espect of the game including his own, he did use the word , we , also

We are struggling to create any chances from open play away from home which is a major concern . Is this down to the tactics used or our players not being good enough.

We will need to make a step up in class next season. Wilder will know this and I suspect a few 1st team squad regulars may have to make way

I love the winning attitude, the desire to want more, progress and win more games. I used to hate it when Warnock would come on all happy after losing (in the PL) and say things like, we'll we have done well to get here in the first place, it's been a great day out for the lads...

Perhaps a bit over emotional, and there were a few tactical issues that perhaps rest with him (e.g. not playing more mobile strikers against Wes Morgan, switching to 4-4-2 a little too late), which he will learn from, but I love everything about his attitude. He can't do much though if players like Lunstrum, Norward etc start giving the ball away and the defenders start hoofing it to McB (which there was too much of last night).

Honestly like how brutal he was but would prefer him to have criiticised himself as well, surely he can't think he did everything right in the game and think he did miss a big trick not starting moose.
I think Wilder was right not starting Moose, bring him on later when Morgan was (hopefully) knackered so he could do him for pace... unfortunately within 5 minutes of being on the pitch Moose looked more knackered than Morgan

I agree, I just think we all already knew this back at the start of the season. The surprise is that we've been as good as we have been. Even if you only look at the fact that Basham and McGoldrick are the wrong side of thirty you can see there's work to be done however brilliant they've been this season. Every side needs to be constantly trying to improve or they go backwards.
